While playing Rudiger on Twitter I found this. Quite nice if you ask me, when it's true.
The Live Currency ?@TheLiveCurrency 27 mei
Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler is reported to be joining John Illsley at intimate London gig in June at The Jazz Cafe.
Link says Phil Palmer is playing there too. http://www.soundcraftltd.com/john-illsley/4582680650

That was a couple of days ago... :(
-
No? June 19th 2014?
LE
-
On time to travel there? I wish there is a confirmation. ;D
-
I've asked the people from the Twitter account if there is any source to confirm this
-

LE
sorry, i saw 27 may haha
-
Anyway, Phil Palmer is confirmed. What are the odds of Knopfler being there with Phil Palmer (the straits, ds legends) involved?

As long as a piece of string! ;D

After all I read from and about Phil Palmer during the last couple of years are am more astonished that Phil wants to play together with Mark.. ::)

I think the fan are way more upset by the tributes band than the main artist himself. So WTF if Phil is invited by John to play with him? Phil Palmer is a serious session man after all.
-
Seem to remember that Phil came to one of MK's solo shows in Italy?
So probably no bad blood.
And as for Phil pointing out that MK was a dick during the OES era, well, he was.

Really? On what do you base your viewpoint? The infamous sausage incident? Or was there more....

I saw Phil Palmer twice at the Royal Albert Hall corridors, one in a Mk concert, the other in a Clapton concert. The Mk one was years before The Straits / Ds Legends. I asked him if he saw Mk before the concert and he said, "no, and not after either"

Was Phil in the audience?

He was inside the RAH before the concerts started, so I guess he was in the audience in both cases, unless the RAH staff left people go inside to take a walk and then go out before the concert starts ;D

John Illsley confirmed, via his contact formulary in his website, that Mark Knopfler WILL NOT play with him, but PHIL PALMER.

Sausages for nothing but other stuff too, infamous Vox magazine article where Phil called Mark an ogre (in the middle of the tour!) being one example.

I've got that somewhere and if I remember he says MK is a wanker as he goes to get in the lift, but it has been 20 years since I read it so I may be somewhere between slightly and totally wrong.

What can you expect from someone who wears yellow jeans.... :P

In the quote he says to the journalist "And remember, Mark Knopfler's a..." and the lift closes!

Well, don't know Phil or Mark but based on what is written here, and considering that Phil was an employee of Mark's, in my opinion you have given the wrong person the title.

I'm confused, who are you saying should have the title?

Talking about titles... and wankers...

Explicit language warning!!! :o
-

Sorry to be unclear. I just meant that based on what I have read here, Phil doesn't sound like such a sterling character himself!
-
Just because someone is an employer shouldn't make them exempt from criticism IMO. Throughout history plenty of employers have been arseholes.
-
Phil plays for many artists, some of them over the years, like with George Michael. Sure he has his character too, but as an employee, you totally depend on your boss, and being honest, Phil is not the only one talking like that about MK during the DS years, Tommy Mandel, Jack Sonni, Chris whitten, Manu Katche... I guess that MK as a boss was, lets say, too demanding.
-
As you might imagine, (and can see from my last post) this thread is slightly boring now that we know MK will not play with John. But nevertheless, wayaman, you got me with mentioning Chris Whitten.. I never was aware of him saying anything about MK at all, let alone anything negative? Please elaborate!

Thread title edited. :)
-
I read in an article back in 92 that he (Whitten) suffered Mk's anger a few times during the tour because Mk wanted everyone to start or stop playing at the exact microsecond, if not, be ready to suffer the boss anger. Not very relaxing enviroment for a long world tour.
-
Thanks for explaining.
So maybe this is it: The reason why MK so consequently abandons everything that's Dire Straits related - maybe he recognized that he indeed has not been the best fellow to have around and really changed... I could fully understand that he doesn't want to be remembered all the time at the years where he had another attitude...
LE
-
Maybe it has something to do with the band concept too. Even some of the musicians were hired musicians, they felt they were part of the band (Tommy Mandel, Jack Sonni, Terry Williams...) but when they were left out from the band and substituted by another hired musicians, they felt kind of betrayed and disappointed by MK.
I read MK saying that democracy doesnt works in a band, and I wonder why he wanted to start a band in the first place instead of starting his own career like did, at the same era more or less, Elvis Costello.
Now, he
-
yes the paradox is that he had more a "solo attitude" during his band era, while he has more a "band attitude" during his solo era....
and about OES era / Whitten quote, Guy said many times that they too much rehearsed for the OES tour....the exact microsecond...yes, well described for the music style during this era
-
About MK attitude during the OES era, I think its fair to add that MK wanted to do such a long tour as things at home were so bad that he ended divorcing Lourdes, so probably he was quite angry with things related with his private life during all that period, that affected his attitude during the tour.
-
Well, darn! It is always hard to find out your heroes have feet of clay.

Having a search for Chris Whitten quotes, here's an irrelevant but nevertheless interesting one. :)

very interesting, thanks
"the 2,5h shows"....well maybe at the very start of the tour, but the usual length was more about "only" 2h I think
the 2,5 hours shows were for the 96 tour...longest gigs in MK's career I believe
another funny thing revealed by Chris Whitten is that Pottel isn't the only one to have a pee break during songs... ;D

Thanks Dusty, really great research.

That tour was no picnic.

Phil Palmer was the guitar player on John's first solo album (on all tracks except on two where Mark played, if I remember correctly), so there is a connection from even before DS.

Getting to like Chris writing all these things for us to read, but where does he find the time? :hmm

Good John Illsley interview available for the next seven days.
