Thread for minor references to Mark that don't warrant a dedicated thread.
I'll start things off with this pic from a 1994 edition of Q magazine.

I enjoyed the programme very much - thanks Dusty. There were some lovely songs chosen by Rosanne. I was just a bit surprised that Phil didn't know that MK played on License to Kill. :)

Feels weird seeing Hank Marvin as a team captain on a quiz team. It’s hardly like Ian Hislop against Paul Merton is it?!?

Yea Hank and Bruce always seems to have a good bit of banter. Makes them look really awkward standing next to Cliff who always thinks he’s funny but does not have an ounce of comic timing in his body

Don't forget Jet, he was a real 'joker of the pack' remember when we met him after one particular show and he signed a couple of my Shadows EP's and he said 'those kisses are for your wife not you' - fits of laughter were heard!!

It’s true what MK says about his house in 1980
The Camberwell house was a large home on a nice street in a decent neighborhood, without being overly ritzy.
It was full of almost empty rooms.
A couple of mattresses on the floor. Guitars strewn about amongst makeshift ashtrays and piles of clothing.
Such was the application of newly found wealth within a framework of a life in which there wasn’t enough time to think about interior decoration or indeed much of anything else.
There was a focus on music and performance and a hunger for recognition and success that superseded all such mundane practices.
The first car bought was a black Saab Turbo I remember. Sporty and practical.
It was a first installment towards a collection of classic cars that over the years grew to fill the facility of a car dealership .
The song Romeo and Juliet was of course a stand-out from the rest of the reportoire, as it strayed from the instrumentation of what had come before on the first two albums.
It became an instant classic to all who heard it.
One night in Manchester on the Making Movies tour at the Apollo theater, Mark started playing the intro to it on his now world famous National Steel guitar when all of a sudden he burst out laughing.
We had never seen that happen before. The usual demeanor being serious and focused and purposeful.
He stopped the song, laughed and explained to the audience why he had to stop and regroup himself.
He explained…
On the previous tour we had two Merchandising guys who were Scottish. Their names were Rab and Norrie .
Their accents were so thick that many of us wondered how they could ever communicate with anybody who was not well trained in listening to the Scots, let alone sell them anything.
This is what they did however, and they were great guys to have around. Going out for a drink with them on a rare night off was always a good time.
Mark told the audience about these men and explained that somehow he had had a conversation about true love and the trials and tribulations of one night stands on the road..
It was agreed that sometimes you might wake up with someone you didn’t really know.
Rab’s definition of true love however was that when you woke up and looked at the girl waking up next to you, your first words would be ….
Good morning Flower 🌺
Having shared this nugget of Rab wisdom with the audience, he then started the song anew.
I’m sure that the people who were there have never forgotten that rendition.

Stuff just vanishes into the ether on FB and I thought it was so good it should be preserved here on AMIT. :)

I'm thinking, Mark has never co-written anything with anyone, Mark has said he prefers to write alone. Why would he suddenly change his pattern with this guy? I'm not saying the guy is lying, but the whole thing sounds very strange.

Mark has a few co-written songs.
GF himself has one or two co-written songs with MK.
It is very possible that MK has ghost-written songs for some people. (Maybe it was the case with Jedd)

My take is this is more or less a "let's have some fun with guitars and songs" proposal rather than let's write, record and publish songs together. Like he did with Bob Dylan, Chet Atkins and all the rest of them... Besides, good artists copy, and great artists steal, so it's a good idea to invite somebody you like to "beg, steal and borrow" from them as Chet Atkins would say. A very good tactical manoeuvre from MK in my book.
With that said, for hilarious Mark Knopfler stories, you go to Ed Bicknell. This is rather an embarrassing story.
-
That said, what an amazing guitarist Jedd Hughes is! Oh, man.

Something about a contract for using a DS song in a film right ?

Basically he says MK was taking a long time to authorise use of a DS song in his film.
So he got backstage in LA and got MK to sign the contract there...

Sounds like a dick move to shove a contract under his nose that way.

Not the first time I heard stories like that. Either it is too difficult to approach MK or people doing it don't know better. But the funniest thing MK always obliges, maybe in order not to multiply dickness in the universe.
-
The film came out in 2006 so presumably this happened after the ATRR show with Emmylou that was filmed.

Why it's back in the charts? It said in the article, it's because Newcastle United finally won a trophy.

That physical sales chart is truly bizarre. I'd be very interested to know how many copies you need to sell to register on it.

I wonder if Newcastle United will invite Mark for their Trophy party
