Title: Some snippets about MK in Holly Vincent Interview
Post by: yontwocrows on July 25, 2014, 01:17:59 AM
I just found some info snippets about MK in this interview (http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/hollyandtheitalians2.htm (http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/hollyandtheitalians2.htm)) with Holly Vincent that must be published after 2007. Don't know if it's old stuff for you. But i didn't know that Mark listened to the punk band "dictators". And thanks god she didn't become the drummer of Dire Straits  ;)

Here the snippets:

Quote
I lived with Chris Wood and his wife Jeanette Jacobs, one of Hendrix's girlfriends and a singer with Dr John. Again I was 18, and I hung out with several great musicians, Mitch Mitchell, Jim Capaldi, John Cale, Mark Knopfler [we met through a Melody Maker ad for a guitar player placed by me and Pete's girlfriend Jackie Badger, an excellent bass player]

Quote
Pete told me you were asked to play drums for Dire Straits! How did that come about? Was this before Holly and the Italians?
Yes. I'm not good at chronology but yeah, it was before Holly and the Italians. Pick Withers was perfect anyway for them. He's great. As I said, Mark's and my relationship went back to when I was a teen, and first starting to play professionally [drums]. He was an influence, as was I on him. I turned him on to the Dictators music [N.Y. punk band] and he later sought out Andy Shernoff to work with. Mark inundated me with JJ Cale and Steely Dan stuff.

Quote
How did Holly and the Italians get signed to Oval records of the UK? Were you seen supporting Blondie?
Mark Knopfler introduced me to Charlie Gillett [Oval], after bringing myself and my drummer [Steve] back to London from L.A. I played Mark my Italians demo while he was in LA to begin working with Bob Dylan, after Dire Straits had had hits. He wanted to hook me up with his [Marks] managers.
We opened for Blondie at the Hammersmith Odeon and I was 'discovered' by Lyn Goldsmith [photographer] she went back to N.Y. and hyped me to my soon to be manager Gary Kurfirst. [Ramones, Talking Heads, B 52's] I was also at the time being courted by all the major labels based on my live shows in clubs around London. success happened very quickly for me there. I was also approached by labels in Los Angeles, and by Phil Spector who wanted to produce me, but I already had a plan in place with Mark, and I loved London ...England... Europe... anti-capitalist I am...lol...

Thank you, yontwocrows!    What I really wanted to know was how she felt about the trilogy of songs, including R & J that MK wrote about her.   The interviewer missed the opportunity.   :-\

Yes, but i think these informations are too private. And what do you expect from a punk lady? Moaning? :D
Anyway, must be kind of strange for her hearing R&J over and over after all these years. But i listened because of these statements to steely dan, and his influence is obvious.

To get on-topic again, I was astonished to read about It Never Rains being mentioned in this context. Is this information confirmed that this song has to do with this punk lady? I would never have thought that it was about a love story, but with that in mind, the lyrics are somewhat clearer now.

It us said that Solid rock is about her too, and the "three more fingers point to you" lines are David, Pick and John...

It was played in the final shows of 1979.

It's just my opinion. but I think this is a typical case of people looking to read more into a lyric than there is.
The line is just a clever observation, that when you point your finger, your other 3 fingers are pointing back at you
i.e, when you try to blame someone else for something going wrong, you are probably as much to blame yourself,
Now that may be aimed at Holly, but I don't think there is anything more to it than that.

I'm not expert in lyrics, but The Oldfield book says something like that, about the recording of the LOG album :

Marks claims that It never rains comes from nothing and has nothing to do with others songs or subjects, but it seems to close a trilogy about a "disappointment in love"
(can't remember exactly, but it's the idea)

and at the beginning of the LOG tour, the 3 songs were played in a row
http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/111282.htm (http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/111282.htm)

and the Oldfield books insists in the 1st chapter, about the gigs in Wembley 82, saying something like :
and then they are playing Romeo and Juliet, closing a trilogy about a love story which failed

yes and it was recorded as a demo in early 80 with David on guitar and backing vocals.
You can hear it on the BBC arena documentary

About Holly Vincent, I have a theory, but of course it's just my opinion, and I have no proof of that :

around late78/early79, you can see pictures showing Mark with a neck lace, like this one :
http://www.gettyimages.fr/detail/photo-d'actualit%C3%A9/mark-knopfler-from-dire-straits-performs-live-on-photo-dactualit%C3%A9/94103657 (http://www.gettyimages.fr/detail/photo-d'actualit%C3%A9/mark-knopfler-from-dire-straits-performs-live-on-photo-dactualit%C3%A9/94103657)

or on the live at the BBC cover

or in Rockpalast :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVDgZaOpYfA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVDgZaOpYfA)

he doesn't have it on Chorus TV show on 14th october 78 :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDzzGXk-hg4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDzzGXk-hg4)

he has it in Hamburg 28th october 78 :
http://www.mk-guitar.com/?s=hamburg&x=0&y=0 (http://www.mk-guitar.com/?s=hamburg&x=0&y=0)
http://www.mk-guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/4404294895_7ff88fd268_o.jpg (http://www.mk-guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/4404294895_7ff88fd268_o.jpg)

and he doesn't have it anymore on the final gig in december 79, after they broke up :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0GlnWBipQQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0GlnWBipQQ)

I think that this neck lace could be a gift from Holly Vincent, or at least is related with her.

So their relationship could have started between 14 and 28 october 78... ::)

I think that where do you think you're going was already composed at this time (demo have been recorded during autumn, can't remember which month, I have to check on Oldfield book), so thats' why I guess this song is not about Holly Vincent, although Ed Bicknell explains that Marks sung it like never before in late 79 during US tour when they broke up (Holly told it to Mark on phone juste bfgore going on stage). But the exact date of the gig is unknown.
Maybe it's on a bootleg we all know...

JF, my question wasn't a criticism.   The thread kept referring to WOL as Walk of Life, which doesn't seem to fit in that period, but Water of Love certainly does.  Perhaps I read too fast, but I didn't see it mentioned, so I just suggested it.   :)
