Dire Straits reunion in 2015 or 2016?
Dire Straits will probably reconvene for a couple of concerts. A press conference to announce the temporary reunion of one of the biggest rock acts of the eighties and nineties will follow later this year. Former Dire Straits rhythm guitarist Phil Palmer alluded to this backstage after a John Illsley concert in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) on February 26th. Whether the reunion will take place in 2015 or 2016 remains unclear. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the band's official split up. An other possibility for the reunion could be the fact that 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Dire Straits' latest studio album On Every Street.

Oh noooooooooooo. Please, no.
-
Total BS. Never gonna happen, thank god. Good on Mark for not selling out and continuing to produce amazing music.
-
The French radio presenter Francis Zegut also announced that yesterday on its blog.
And generally, he is very well informed.
Personally, it would be my dream which comes true.

No way! :thumbsdown
Mark has way moved on from the DS days........
-
Total bullshit. Never gonna happen, thank god. Good on Mark for not selling out and continuing to produce amazing music.
Totally agree. The reunions of other historical groups gave me so much sadness: pathetic
-
I would love it to happen. Cream, The Police... are example of old bands that sounded excellent. To me, it doesn
-
Ha Ha Ha, no way, probably it's the STRAITS reunion...
-
Source?
-
I really hope it's not true! Best to remember DS at their best, because I know it would be a huge disappointment ;)
-
Interesting first post.
-
It'll never happen. Why?
-
I would prefer, instead, some Mark & friends concert, like happened in 2002
-
Guy confirmed 'Bullshit' already ;)

Yes, but the poster more or less put the words into his mouth! :think I really hope it's not true! :-\
-
Ha Ha Ha, no way, probably it's the STRAITS reunion...
I think so too.
-
Will ask Phil tomorrow at the John Illsley concert in Hengelo. @Ingrid, will you ask him tonight? ;)
-
100% it's a The Straits re-union (as if they have what to re-unite anyway), and this situation is also 100% proves why people like me hate The Straits. You can play great Mark's songbook, nothing wrong about that, but you can't take name that gives misdirection to hundreds of people all around the world, not to mention media and even official websites.
-
They could make a lot money for charity if the did re-unite
-
A dire straits reunion will never happen because Mark will never want it to happen, which is good in my opinion. This probably is referring to a "straits" reunion What a total joke! Phil Palmer is IMHO being disrespectful! What a washed up piece of ..... Please excuse my language.

We can express an opinion (we encourage it) but pls keep the 4-letter words & personal stuff out it

And he wasn't even the no. 1 choice overall. Vince Gill was, but declined. ;)
-
If I speak Phil tonight I will ask him
-
@FOMA:
Do you really think this is about The Straits? Why would such an unknown band hold a press conference if they're going to perform again? Bands and solo artists almost never hold a press conference. Only big artists do so to announce a major event coming up. So yes, I assume this must indeed be about a Dire Straits reunion in some way, be it a charity concert or even a new album or both.
-
Guaranteed that this Is not Dire Straits, but the "straits (lame)" .................. Phil Palmer trying to trick people into thinking that it's a real Dire Straits reunion, when of course it is not. Phil should be ashamed of himself. ............................

Laughable and not a chance in hell thank God. :thumbsdown
-
And whats the source, again?
-
I second jbaent: where is the source?
And i think a announced press conference would perfectly fit to THE STRAITS, but it wouldn't fit to Mark (IF he announces than always ONE day before the event ;D) I don't think that Phil Palmer is to blame. Sounds like a misunderstanding and we can't be sure if he did it on purpose. The whole "backstage" story is a bit poor, and so
WHERE IS THE SOURCE?
-
Phil Palmer is IMHO being disrespectful! What a washed up piece of ..... Please excuse my language.
I don't post here very often but in this case i am forced to.
You accuse Phil Palmer of being "a ........................." and call Phil Palmer a "piece of .......". What's wrong with you? :disbelief
Some people in this forum seem to have a fundamental problem with Phil Palmer because he is not Mark's best friend - but he appears to be a fairly nice guy and has worked with many musicians during his long career (more than Mark Knopfler has done) and there seem to be more people in the business having problems with MK than with Phil (not only frustrated DS ex-members).
Apart from this he is a very fine guitar player who deserves a bit more respect.
If you don't like him for whatever reason - fine. But don't insult him for things he might have said (or not). Even if he talked about a DS reunion, even if he did it on purpose to gain attention or whatever - there is no reason to use such words! >:(

Could you just not do that? Who's disrespectful now? Don't post at all please if you don't have to say anything better than this fairly rude nonsense. Not everyone likes reading such things. Thank you.
-
We all have opinions some stronger than others, but please watch the language & keep any personal dislike's civil and respectful.

Shangri la, hola knopfler, and tobi, sorry guys you are right. I still feel the same way, but you are right. The language is unnecessary and out of place. I got a little carried away. Please accept my sincere apologies.

All good now. Thanks for the reminders, SL1, and thanks for your graciousness in your last post, communicque. Well done.

:thumbsup Thanks communique. :clap

Thanks communique :thumbsup

OK guys, just had a good chat with Phil Palmer.
He wanted me to point out that there will not be a reunion of Dire Straits because Mark will not join.
Buy they are working on a reunion of a band with all members without Mark Knopfler himself which of course will not be called Dire Straits. He wanted me to make this totally clear because Mark will be pissed with other messages.
By the way: Phil and John are both very nice and relaxed people. Take enough time to talk with people and sign items.
Now going to eat something and have another great night with John Illsley and band in Hengelo, Netherlands
-
Thanks Ingrid! Do you know who will be lead guitarist and what they will be called - The Straits perhaps? Will John be in the band too? Have a good concert tonight! :wave
-
They are busy with it, including John. Didn't ask about lead guitar or whatever
-

Thank you! :)
-
Alan Clark left The Straits because he wanted to create new songs instead of playing the DS hits alone, I don't think Guy will join them so... What a reunion would it be?
-
@tobi: pls tell us what you mean with mark and his relation to others in the business being worse then phil's
Just curious
And as for the rest, no name calling pls, keep it civil. We are a generally free forum, but still, watch it.
-
So is it meant to be some permanent thing? If not, DS sans Mark have more or less reunited several times in Italy, right?
-
And gimme a break - Phil - he played on one tour. "Original member" mmmwahahaha!
-
I wonder what they will be called - "The Straits" or "Dire Straits Legends" or another title altogether! :think
Isn't it meant to be a temporary affair - a sort of anniversary thing? I know MK isn't going to be in the band, but what if he came on stage at the end to take a bow as the composer of all these wonderful songs? ;) Yes, I know, pigs might fly! :lol
-
I know that we might have different opinions about this (which is fine), but I find this Straits etc thing quite sad. What if this current band of Mark Knopfler would take another singer-guitarist and perform without Mark as a band of Mark Knopfler...

Good illustration. Sounds meaningless...
-
If even Roger Waters and David Gilmour reunite to perform under the name Pink Floyd again (Live 8, 2005), I would surely consider a DS reunion a possibility. Think about it. MK has been doing what he wants to do for the past 20 years. That's a longer period than DS existed, so any revulsion he had against performing under the name Dire Straits must have faded quite a bit over time. Oh yes, a reunion is very much possible... Would be great. Even one concert would already be awesome.

I actually think the opposite. Due to several "almost Straits" bands over the last years, and all the noise and confusion around those bands, I would think that he is more negative to a reunion now than ever before.

It could also be seriously disappointing. Best to leave it as a beautiful memory. ;)

A very interesting take. Most of them wouldn't be able to play the DS songs to any decent level IMO. Not with the arrangements they used in the old days anyway. No offence to the current band meant by that, but they have their own style and flutes and whistles weren't part of the scene back then!
I find this Straits thing most disagreeable. A mere money maker for ex-band members, some of whom only present for the duration of a tour and think above their station in the band's history.
-
I would definately go, the DS songs played by John Illsley and band were really good. I also enjoyed The Straits in the Netherlands. It's not the Same without MK but hearing the DS songs played by excellent musicians is really nice.

Agree, I show them and liked them. Obviously without MK it

OFFICIAL MESSAGE FROM PHIL PALMER
They are trying to put a band together with old bandmembers of Dire Straits. We didn't talk about who will or will not be involved. During DS timers some people leaved the band and some appeared. They don't want to recreate Dire Straits. They want to celebrate the wonderful music with passion and respect. Not a reunion of any discription.
Phil never said it was a reunion and he understands why MK fans would object to it. They have no wish to challenge the great reputation and spirit of a wonderful band ... and the genius of MK in which it was his great privilege to be involved in a short period. He said: "we, like all people on the forum, want the music to live on"
Phil asked me to make this totally clear. He read the reactions on this thread and understands people are against reunion when MK is not involved. That's the reason he asked me to make this totally clear. And he hopes the reactions will be less negatieve about this whole idea. I think it's a great idea. It's so nice to hear those old songs again, played by those great musicians.
All the best, Ingrid
-
I was there too last night and I must say it was an amazing concert.
I think the most important thing is your own expectation.
If you expect the same level of playing like Mark did in DS, you'll be disappointed.
But if you expect another take on those songs, you'll have a great night!
John is still a great bass player, Phil is a great guitarist, and the other bandmembers are also all good.
-
I bet that Caviglia will be the lead guitar and vocals. Phil lives in Italy so it makes sense.
-
Phil, if you are reading this, please come and contribute to the forum!
We have had a few ex DS members come and chat and their contributions have always been valued. :)
-
Dear Phil, if you read this, it doesn't matter how much or how well you explain it, there always be fans that will think you are trying to make money from MK's legacy and will call you things like some people already did here and did with The Straits in the past.
-
I bet that Caviglia will be the lead guitar and vocals. Phil lives in Italy so it makes sense.
IMO That would kill it stone dead. With all respect to Marco he can play the songs, but I've heard the you tube clips with his strong Italian accent
I couldn't bear to listen to a whole concert of that.
-
We will see what happens. I didn't ask about the line-up they are looking for. Yesterday and friday John Illsley did the vocals. It sounded really good. Actually everything was great, not only the DS songs. John's solo songs are really worth listening. Yesterday they played where do you think you're going as an encore, it was on the setlist in Zoetermeer as well but not played. Really great to hear those good old beloved songs played that well ;)
And someone earlier said it right: don't expect the sound of MK, he isn't there to play, but expect really good played songs and you have a great night
-
good to see this straightened out (no pun intended) and sure hope for a word or two from Mr. Palmer.
seeing as how both tommy mandel and jack sonni contributed, it would be another nice addition.
-
Queen still perform without Freddie Mercury. Nuff said
-
Oh yes and if any band members are reading I would wholeheartedly support some kind of musical meet up of ex band members. Its only music, but music worth celebrating so people need to chill out and i would suggest not attend such a gig if they object to the idea. I have seen MK, the Straits and Big John all play live over the past couple of years and the latter two have not disappointed.
-
It's about 35 years since Dave left the band. Maybe they could commemorate that?
All kidding aside, I think the original line-up is the only one I'd care to see reunite. Four geezers in their 60s playing those early songs would be smoking.
-
I suppose you don't see a lot of live concerts of 60'ers redux.
I do see a lot and generally they rock like last 2 days with John.
So was almost every concert of 60'ers I attended in the last 5 years. And i think when i start counting the number of shows I now talk about is about 100.
Besides that, original line-up isn't necessary. I enjoyed every tour since 1985 and I loved them all.
I also had a great party with BBB some years ago to celebrate our 40th birthday and our 30 years fandom of mk. We had an excellent DS coverband and rocked our heads of with all DS songs :)
It's a matter of enjoying what you get and enjoying great musicians with great songs is the best thing in life.
-
What I meant was that I think those early songs would fit the gentlemen in question better than reproducing the ginormous arena monstrosities that followed later. Just pretending the fabulous four got back together for a commemorative evening of frivolous sing-song, seeing them in a small, intimate Sultans-style venue would be swell.
-
That will never happen. Besides that the 4 you mean only did 2 albums together if I remember well. A lot more followed with other musicians involved. But I agree with you about intimate venues, like this weekend. It's really great to see those musicians in smaller venues
-

No, on a serious note, I agree, it would be nice to have all past contributors to the journey to share their stories here! :thumbsup

Maybe in the form of a musical, set in the Swiss alps?

So long as they make it absolutely clear that they are NOT Dire Straits, I'm sure most fans would feel much better about this celebration of DS songs. Another name, other than "The Straits" would be great, so there's no confusion! ;)

Yeah right, The Fab Four still my favourite tribute band. They not called The Beetles or something like that, just familiar yet not confusing name. Perfect.
-
I agree Val, but the problem is that it's not Phil or John or whoever will join will say this, it's the promotors, the journalists and so on who will talk about that all the time. I hope they will choose another name as well. But pretty sure the posters and articles will not talk about that, they will only mention DS all the time.

That's a shame, because I feel that the name "The Straits" is the main bone of contention amongst DS fans. If the name was changed there would be much less negativity about the band. :) I also feel that Mark should be mentioned somewhere in the show as the composer of the songs, even though he may not be present.

Steady now. I can imagine a concert poster with very small font in composer word and huge in MK
-
If the band will have ex DS members and they play DS songs, the name DS has to be there, it just makes sense... the band name has to be a reference to what they play so fans could easily know what they are gonna listen...
The Straits was too close to the real name, but there was a difference anyway. "Dire Straits Legends" or "DS experience" have the whole band name but with an extra word that makes clear what they are... whatever they call themselfs people will always get confused about it...
The Spanish cover band "Brothers In Band" announce themselfs with that name and the subtitle "The Very Best of Dire Straits Show"... I got phone calls from some of my friends telling me that Dire Straits were playing in my town despite announcing them as "Brothers In Band", people gets confuse anyway.
-
MK will get some fees because of his rights, same as he will get from the shows of John Illsley in the Netherlands.
And be realistic, everyone knows who the composer is. And .... any regular coverband, marriageband etc don't mention any composernames of the songs they are playing, otherwise it wasn't a band but a talking group also playing some songs ;D
And indeed Jbaent, people who don't follow DS/MK as close as we do (so the other 99,999999% of the population) will be confused. And every promotor, hall or whatever will use the word DS where they can to attract as much people as they can. It's their right.
-

This is maybe a bit offtopic, but I think that you can play cover songs without paying any fees. It

As far as I know the venue pays (in the Netherlands) to Buma/Stemra, they pay at the international fee-committe (whatever it's called) and they pay the artist. We concluded that MK would have got about GBP 0,10 or so from the Netherlands ;D
Don't know how it works exactly, but I think those committees cost more than they pay to artists ::)
-
At the end of the day surely it's the intention to deceive by use of the similar name that would be wrong and although I have been against The Straits from the very start, I wouldn't like to think the name was chosen for that purpose. It should have been better thought through though. "The Straits" was also a nickname used by many of us, including MK, for the real band!
The "Dire Straits Legends" one is a well chosen name and makes it clear.
-
"Dire Straits Legends" :thumbsup :)
-
The thing is though that when The Straits (the tribute band) were active, they were featured in quite a few newspapers and stuff and said "we are are few ex-members plus others that want to keep alive and celebrate the legacy of DS and the music of MK". Something to that effect.
Whatever John and Phil and the others get established, and with Chris White and Terence Reis doing their DS Experience thing in Australia, the chances are big that there will be confusion as they all offer more or less the same thing. Really a strange situation.
Not to mention all the various Italian configurations that have involved one or more ex-DS members.
-
Here's a crazy idea but why don't all the ex-member bands get together and have one big band where they could each come on stage at various points during the concert to rapturous applause and do their thing for a few songs. That would let them all have a go and stop all the confusion with so many similar sounding names.
They could all sit down backstage and discuss how long they lasted until MK fired them! ;)
-
"You're fired! Now where are my sausages?"
Ah! Maybe the new tune Hot Dog is a dour reflection on the goings-on during Sausageville?
