A Mark In Time

I love how Mark compared guitarist's pedalboard with a plane's cockpit. I really can't understand how people can go through all that stuff, too.
For my fellow guitar Knopfler loving nerds, I feel compelled to let you know that I recently brought THE most amazing pedal, the Strymon Deco.
The Deco emulates the effect of tape saturation and delay between two tape machines and it really is quite remarkable and useful. No, you don't get "the smell of tape" but the sound of it is the best sounding harmonic distortion at low volumes I've ever heard. This is a very nice thing indeed when at home, but also for weddings etc. when you don't want to saturate your valve amp and make everyone feel their at a concert!
I've been using single coil Strats and a Jazzmaster through the Deco and into a Princeton, which has allowed me to ditch my (previously always used) Compressor, Chorus & Overdrive pedals. The result is amazing. If I get time in the Easter hols I'll make a quality demo vid, but in the meantime I'll copy up Strymons own yt vid as an example (I'm usually wary of demonstration vids from promoters as they hardly ever sound like it does when you finally get the real thing, but the Deco has amazed me.)
To summarize, this little gadget can add subtle or noticeable dynamic harmonic distortion AND/OR act as a two tape deck chorus, delay, flange machine just like in the 60s and 70s.

A shorter, more concise demo, again delightful :)

Looks like a great pedal, but at that price (£250 in the U.K) I'd need to be playing a lot of that kind of music to justify the cost, particularly as I don't "play out". I'd be interested to hear your demo if you get round to it.

Yep I have a week off over Easter and I intend to do one.
It is expensive ($369au) but if you do use a few pedals already (as stated, when I play almost any type of gig except a cafe I use compression, chorus and overdrive) then the cost is comparative.
What I REALLY like is a very pleasing distortion similar to Marks LP sound, except that I'm getting that sound via a Jazzmaster not humbuckers.
But as the second vid I posted shows, the quality is amazing. I used to use a BD2 overdrive for pubs, receptions but for home it sounds like mush, horrible harmonics.
What a salesman I am :)

Doesn't really do it justice - all I can say, is that it's extremely 'natural' and 'pleasant' in real life. Your probably better off watching Strymons vids or someone that doesn't get nervous when the record button is pressed !

LOL - I get that too. I think GF called it "Red light syndrome". I can play something right through with no problems & as soon as I start to record I totally forget how to play it ! It's the pressure of "having to get it right".
I'm really impressed by the pedal, and your demo was useful too (although it's disappeared now). Very tempting but I really don't think I can justify the cost when I have other pedal combinations that get very close, and I'm not performing live. (and a recent Blacktop Jaguar purchase has dented my "toy fund"). ;D

I deleted my vid, I only got one go at it as my iPad memory is full up & my vid didn't do the pedal justice. Still loving the Deco, highly recommend :)
