First I've heard of it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrick_Club
To be honest I'm a bit surprised (and a little disappointed?) that MK is a member of an exclusive gentleman's club, I would have thought that he would be above that sort of thing.
-
I hope there will be some REAL fans there and not just stuffy members who will not appreciate MK's music. I must admit, I am quite surprised really, that he would be a member of an exclusive club. :-\
-
I don't believe it. Looks like inaccurate information to me (or, to use a technical term: bullsh*t).
-
also, thanks to management/TK for provinding us with this information, when all tickets are sold out...
sure hope someone will get in and tape...
-
Thanks are due to Emily Andler on MKNews Forum, not TK or management. :)

Hmmm...If this is true ( It's hard to believe for me ::) ) I wonder why there are tickets when it is "an exclusive gentleman's club" and are the tickets for the members only?
-
Sorry, Maarten, I'm not up to speed today! ;D
-
I just read it on MK news also and because I was curious about this club also, I posted some information from Wikipedia there!
Information Wikipedia, why I think Mark is there at the right place:
The original plans state that The Garrick Club is instituted for the general patronage of drama; for the purpose of combining the use of a Club, on economic principles, with the advantages of a literary society; for bringing together supporters of drama; and for the formation of a theatrical library, with works on costume. It also has a significant art collection and various theatrical artefacts.
IF the information it true then I think it is an honour for Mark to be part of this club. Not because it is exclusive and only for a few rich people, but because (If I understand completely) this is a club for very intelligent people who come together and talk about books perhaps art and serious things that happens in the world! ::)
Besides being a great and wonderful artist, we all know that Mark loves art, to read books and of course he is very intelligent! I think he is a man that fits in all worlds! ;D

My Dutch sister is correct.!!
Mark is, like the rest of us, entitled to do what he wants with his money and free time.
That he has chosen to join - presumably by invitation - an exclusive club that is frequented by artists and patronises the Arts, is his business. Personally I'm impressed!
-
You are of course correct, MK is free to do what he wants.
However, I think those of us who are a bit surprised about MK's membership of this "exclusive" (that is to say it EXCLUDES people, Jeremy Paxman for one if the wiki entry is to be believed) club, would be so because it just doesn't seem like his style.
Normally he seems like he tries to be as normal and down to earth as possible when he's not performing and stuff. Whether it's related to the arts or no, I just find these type of private clubs a bit silly, a relic of a bygone era in British history. Any club where members can "blackball" new recruits and/or exclude women just seems a bit dated to me.
As Groucho Marx said "I wouldn't want to join a club that would have someone like me as a member." :)
-
If MK is going to play there, Guy must be in the line-up too. Who would be a volunteer to ask him?? ;D
-
Could it be a fundraising event for a charitable organization? We all know how generous Mark is.

Hey THANK YOU brother! ;D
The fact that Mark acts normal is because he is normal, ...............don't forget he has his pants on his knees also when he is going to the toilet ..........(uuuhhhh I assume he does, I never was witness of that!! :o ;D) .............BUT being normal doesn't mean that he can't be a member of an exclusive club! ;)

I must admit I was surprised to hear that Mark was a member of the Garrick, but after giving some thought, of course he is entitled, as an artistic person, to be a member of a club for people who are interested in art and drama, etc, which he most certainly is! I suppose the words "gentleman's club" have connotations of elitism and exclusiveness which doesn't seem to describe MK very well. :)

And wouldn't we all love to see a video of his school play surface!!!!!!!!!!!!! I suppose that was not done in those days.

who knows marie...
why is you not on the hub??

I am not on the hub or on the tracker, for that matter because my big computer with all the software is in the hospital. :'( I hope that everything can be recovered, or else I'm in for many many hours of reloading a new hard drive. So that is why i is not on the hub.

According to Guy's Forum, a song from the new album was played at the Garrick last Sunday! I wonder who was in the audience to hear it played for the first time, lucky people! I remember hearing "Secondary Waltz" played for the first time at Hay and it felt really special to be amongst the first to hear it. 8) Roll on September and perhaps some promos.
-
Was your friend one of the lucky ones at the Garrick?
-
Oh wow! That title sets the mind going! . . . . . . . . . . ;D
-
According to a reliable friend of mine
the song from the new album played live at the club
is 'GET LUCKY'
"Get Lucky?" ............Hey listening to Mark's music already makes me feel lucky and happy! ;D
Btw Pensaboy......welcome to the site. I hope you have a great time here, just like we all have! ;D

hi,
"Trop de bruit pour rien" that's all, i just want to hear and see mark playing and singing, all the rest (personal, political...) doesn't matter for me.

We didn

also, dpeends on whether the song was actually announced as 2get lucky" or whether the source "thinks" he heard that in the song's rhymeand assumes it's the title, i speak of personal experience.
-
Hi!
Happy to see a new MK-forum on the web!
Pensaboy: Do you know anything more about the song? Is it up tempo or slow? Any nice guitar solo's?
Jarle :)
-
and more importantly....did he record it??
-
:) ;) Wonder if it was this track from the George Jones - "Burn Your Playhouse Down: The Unreleased Duets"
I have never heard it so maybe Guy would tell someone if it is the same song.

GOOD SONG; GOT ME THE CD LAST YEAR
-
If Guy says they played a new song from the new album, I guess he means exactly that, and not a song in which MK played many many many years ago, written by George Jones, and released this year in a cd containing unreleased colaborations from the past...
Don

only a guess of course ;D
-
ok,...julio is right this time...but only this time!! :-P see-->
Second question - "get lucky" - is this new? What do you think - will the song make it to the new record? Greetings from Switzerland. Nik >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Marc was a VERY lucky chap, that doesn't happen every day. Get Lucky is indeed a new song destined for the album.
-
;) Yes Julio thanks. If I'd waited another 2-hours I would have been able to answer my own question. But I was at work, when Guy posted his response to Niklaus Bruegger's question and now a Henk on Guy's forum got even more clarification by directly asking the question about the new song. ;)
Technically it could have still been called a "New" song by having a completely different arrangement much in the same way as Secondary Waltz was referred to as a new song on the last album, but it had been recorded at a previous time in a different style.
-
again,...recording??? :o :o :o
-
;) Yes Julio thanks. If I'd waited another 2-hours I would have been able to answer my own question. But I was at work, when Guy posted his response to Niklaus Bruegger's question and now Henk from A.M.I.T. got even more clarification by directly asking the question about the new song. ;)
When I read the first post by Guy and i read a new song for the new album, I understood, exactly that, the same when I read it here. I mean, i thought that the only clarification needed by Guy it was if the title was right or just a part of the lyrics ;D
-
Thanks Rocco. You gave us the name of the first song to be played before an audience which will feature on Mark's 2009 CD. Good detective work - well done. :)

Members of the Garrick Club, favoured watering hole of some of England

Oh, and don't know if it's been mentioned earlier, but John McCusker and Luke Brighty also played this gig, and according to GF:
We ran through bits of Sultans, Romeo, Bonaparte, Sailing and did full versions of Why Worry, Secondary Waltz, a song from the new album and Brothers in Arms.
Interesting that WW was played, maybe a contender for the next tour?
-
also, acoutstic MFN,..Sos?? omg...
-
I'll bet they weren't acoustic, he probably had a strat and a Les Paul and an amp set up, I'm thinking a similar type of setup to Hay on Wye.
-
but the idea dusty,...the idea...
-
Sultans would actually sound pretty cool acoustic, if you slowed it down a bit in a sort of bluesy "Layla" style.
Money for Nothing would sound crap unless you gave it a similar blues transformation, sort of like the intro they did for it on the 2001 tour.
Ditto BiA. You really need the sustain of an electric guitar for those solos to work. Listen to the Metallica acouctic cover from a while back for evidence of this.
-
Hi Pottel,
I ask too if there's a recording of this particular night at THE GARRICK's Club.
Did guests able to record the show ?
Expecting to download on the tracker
Thanks
-
I would guess it's highly unlikely that there's a recording.
Think about it - the audience was made up of QCs/former newspaper editors etc at a private members club where it appears to be compulsory to wear a tie (!).
Is it really likely that any of these people made a recording and that they will seek out the tracker or Dime to upload it?
Sorry, but I think not.
-
Dusty, Where did your second quote come from "Knopfler pulls a few strings...." ?
-
Oops, sorry, here's the source.

Thanks dusty! It really irritates me when journalists are so negative about MK. Cardigan and slippers indeed! I don't think this person was there either, because it sounds like he's not sure whether MK wore a tie or not! Grrrr! >:(

My memories about Mark Knopfler concerts articles are always related to the word "Boring"
I remember one article about the MK and friends shows in 2002 with this line "Sultans of sleep" I still laugh when I remember it.
A pitty this new song was played in such enviroment and we didn
