Yes, it's today! Apparently Jack still has that red coat!

I know many people don't but I love Live Aid.
It is the only official live version of SoS with sax on DVD. It is a bit less good that Wembley'85 3 days before, the band was a bit less focused (stress ?) and no soundcheck, but nonetheless a real bad-ass version ;)
I like MFN a bit less, Sting messed up the intro with his out-of-tune voice.
But I still love it, it is the only official recording from the BIA tour era, and precisely the fact that it is not perfect makes it more "human". It was still day, not night, with no special visual effects like on the Wembley video, so you can see very well what is going on on stage.
A very dear document - only too short. If only they played TOL, BIA and PI...
-
I love Sultans here. Maybe even prefer it to 10.07.85. The solo is nice and rough and it is played faultlessly, unlike 10.07.85 which isn't quite perfect. I always laugh when people say "Wembley '85" because they did a residency of 13 consecutive shows, in doing so breaking a record there. :lol
If only they'd got the sound right because Chris is just all over Mark at the end. As you said though Herlock - no soundcheck. :-\
-
And it's the only video in which you can see Joop de Korte playing percussion on stage, with DS he always played in a hidden position since 1980 to 1986, but in Live Aid is on stage between Terry and Guy.

You surprise me ! I thought everybody would think that 10.07.85 is better than 13.07.85... me included... maybe it is because of the mysterious atmosphere that the night setting and special visual effect (quite revolutionary for the time !) that are present on 10.07 and not on Live Aid...

The occasion adds to it too, of course. I just wish the mix at the end of Sultans was better and that Sting never got the lyrics mixed up on MFN!

I agree I think what makes the Live Aid performance is that it is so raw and the feeling in the music is profound. I like seeing Joop, but there is also a guy at the side of the stage who has climbed the scaffold and is looking down...he must have had a great view and just shows the informality of the whole affair.
Sound quality is not so important for me here. I spoke to a guy who had been at Wembley on the day and said of all the acts DS were the best. I think that DS certainly propelled the show at that time into the day into the stratosphere.

Yes it was such a great event to watch on TV, I still remember that day as if it was yesterday, I was in Sweden with my Ex Husband and some neighbours!! By the way I saw that Jack intends to sell his Red Coat on an auction to the benefits of some charity!!! At least it's what he wrote on FB and on his Site!!! Great idea, he will make some money with his famous coat!!! :wave

Some others are saying that Freddie Mercury was the best!!! He surely made the crowd sing and said " F..k You at the end!!! lol!!!

Queen's performance was legendary. :)
-
Love Freddy, great song writer, great voice, great charisma, great controversies :)
still I prefer Mark 1000 times... Can't explain. Like love.

Polar opposite of Mark. With characters like this I always ask myself if they'd be as successful if they behaved like MK and the answer is invariably "no."

I agree with you dmg and Dutchessy. I love Freddie. He was a great performer and singer. Without him Queen would never have been so successful. But MK has more charisma and it's always been because of his guitar playing and his songwriting!! But I still am a big Fan of Freddie and I felt very sorry when he died!!!

Yes it was indeed Dutchessy!!!
-
My opinion of Freddy Mercury is summed up by Marijo58 when she says one of the first things thought of regarding the performance on Live Aid was when he said "F..k You at the end." :lol
-
Haha, Freddy singing We Are The Champions at a charity for starving and poor people in Africa. Epic! But a great performance it was :thumbsup
-
I really like Live Aid. It was the first time I saw DS on video, and the reason I started to love their music when I was kid. Brings back happy memories!

it is the only official recording from the BIA tour era,
yes indeed, and if you realize the BIA tour is the only one not being officlaly released. All other tourshave at leats one song officlally released :
78-79 (we can count these ones for one tour) : live at the BBC
80-81 : TOL on Live at the BBC (version form Dortmund)
82-83 : Alchemy
85-86 : noone, except Live Aid
Mandela 88 : officila Video featuring BIA and MFN if memory serves
91-92 : On the night
96 : A night in lonodn (even if it's not really a concert from the tour)
2001 : TRD bonus disc and Why Aye Man Maxi
2002 : idem
2005 : official downloads (can't remember the provider)
2006 : Real live roadrunning
2008 : ok the other exception
2010 : Simfy live
2011 : ok the other other exception
2013 : Bleecker
2015 : Bleecker
so if we except 2008 and 2011, the BIA tour is the only one which have no official release...knowing that it is considered by many fans and non fans as the peak of their career....

"Brothers in Arms" & "wonderful Tonight" performed during the Nelson Mandela tribute (1988-06-11) were officially released on a VHS tape.

There was soundboard from 96 released as a bonus disc with the Sultans of Swing compilation too. :)

Led Zeppelin perfomance on Live Aid was so so bad that they asked to be deleted from the dvd...
-
I have the boxset on dvd, I only ever play DS, Queen and believe it or not.. Madonna! I think she's great at live aid, and I'd never seen her wearing so many clothes!
-
And what about Phil "crossing the ocean" Collins? He managed to play in London and Philadelphia!
-
Yeah good memories, they made a big deal of Phil doing his thing. Watching the day live I remember the sound troubles with Paul's let it be set, and the unforgettable Bob Geldof swearing live on the bbc saying something like "get the fking phone numbers up..." - we all couldn't belive what we'd heard it was so shocking at the time. A day I remember fondly as a kid.

Madonna is a true performer. I remember seeing her on TV for the live8. Not my cuppa for most if his music but I remember that her first song was sung live (ie without playback) and it was really vocally correct, then for the next one she needed to dance and did it on pre recorded tape and this where I lost interest in his performance.

hey Herlock tu parles souvent de version "bad-ass". comment tu traduirais ça en français ?
"version qui troue le cul "?
"version à tomber sur le cul"
"version du feu de dieu"
"version à tomber par terre"
juste pour être sûr.... :hmm
sorry other people, I just wanted to ask this to Herlock, and the french forum si so quiet that I did it there ;D

Les ricains ont le chic pour retourner la scatologie en positif dans leur argot. Ainsi, "The shit" peut vouloir dire "the best of the best".
Ici, "badass" peut se traduire par "de la mort qui tue la vie" ;)
-
According to Wikipedia, "Donkeys have a notorious reputation for stubbornness" so perhaps this could be labelled a "bad ass" or indeed be the origin of the phrase? :think
Those crazy Yanks! ;D
