I would like to know how often do you hear any Knopfler related songs on your most popular or local radio stations. I come from a small country and we have only a couple of radio stations that are worth the mention. And on nearly every one you can hear Dire Straits playing daily. And I'm not just talking about the most famous ones from Brothers in Arms or Sultans of Swing. Just the other day I heard Angel of Mercy on of the stations and a couple of days earlier I was pretty surprised when Beryl came on. Yesterday I heard some songs from "On The Night" concerts. The most played songs are of course MfN, SoS, SFA, R&J and WoL but every now and then you can hear the less popular ones, I remember hearing "Once upon a time in the west" once.
So if you have some radio stations that you listen to I'm interested on how popular DS/MK is on them.

Pretty rarely. Every few months I might hear Sultans of Swing. I think I have heard one song (Cannibals) from MK's solo catalogue. I stopped listening to the radio, for the most part...

Many times a week. I go by bus to work, and the driver usually have the radio on. The Norwegian channels P4 and Radio Norge play DS all the time, mostly Brothers in Arms and Money for nothing. It's like time machine. Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mister Mister, Bruce Springsteen, Simple Minds, U2, Billie Ocean, Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, Whitney Houston. You think it's still the 80ies.. ::) :)

That's great, I think the 80ies were great when music is concerned. Back then many of the most popular acts were also great artists (unlike today in my opinion) like those you mentioned in your post. On the stations that I listen to, apart from DS there aren't many other 80ies acts. It's much more 60ies and the 70ies like The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and others (and I have no objection to that :) ).
Anyway, I think the reason that Knopfler is so popular on Croatian radio stations are those DS gigs in 83 and 85. The Brothers in Arms tour actually started in Split. Then we were in Yugoslavia and the 80ies were the time when people started looking a bit more to the west (Yugoslav dictator Tito died in 1980) and so I think that every bigger act which came to Yugoslavia was a lot more appreciated than it would be in USA or UK. That dedication stayed with Knopfler's solo work as well. Tracker was no.1 here when it came out and I was surprised and dissapointed that he didn't come to play here. I hope he remembers the Croatian fans the next time he is town :).

There are two popular music radio stations in Spain that play, one of them lots of 80's hits and the other rock and heavy songs from all decades, and they play DS quite a lot.
But the most popular Spanish radio station only plays the shitty commercial music, a pity as they used to play all kind of music 20 years ago, actually I heard the Calling Elvis premiere there...

I don't listen to music oriented radio so I hear DS stuff on them not that often but I got one from time to time. No surprise SOS is often the one aired.

I remember being on holiday in Andalucia, Spain back in 93-94 and hearing tracks from OTN on Cadena 100 (?). Ah those were the days :)

I think that RTL2 in France is the one who sometimes puts some DS stuff, like SOS, MFN and BIA!! But very rarely MK's stuff except before his 2 gigs in Paris, then you could hear some songs from Tracker!!! But I never hear him on other big radios here!! And that's too bad!!!

Radio France aired "Darling Pretty" in '96 when the single was out before album release.
This was the first time I heard MK post DS solo stuff.

Yes ds1984, that is strange that French Radios are not putting some MK's song on air anymore !! I wonder why ??

In Greece you get to listen at least one song (usually DS) per day. You have to be a radio fan though and change stations depending on the program, but you certainly get to listen to one. DS back catalog is represented mostly by the 3 first albums plus the well known songs from BiA and OES.

A few weeks ago I was eating at a Panera Bread Company (a casual restaurant chain) and I was very surprised to hear "Today is OK". This was some sort of playlist rather than commercial radio, but it is very rare to hear an MK song from his more recent solo records where I live. I rarely listen to radio, and if then I usually listen to satellite radio in my car (came with the car when I bought it). Occasionally they will play Sultans or more rarely Telegraph Road or Romeo. The grocery store where I shop sometimes plays Walk of Life and Skateaway.
