Title: Buena Vista Social Club fans - this album is tops
Post by: 11-54_Stringcheese on August 20, 2015, 10:01:40 AM
Stumbled across this album, the second album with Ibrahim Ferrer. Very cool arrangements and production (Ry Cooder). And the sound is awesome. Have a listen.

Totally agreed here.
A Top Album. But nothing beats the first BVSC Album. A milestone.

If you like Ry Cooder then just watch this one here:

They are two very different albums, the original BVSC being more traditional and this one more "experimental". The first one is obviously a classic, but I think this one is more fun.

Bonamassa? Thank you, but I prefer the real deal.

me too. I find Bonamassa's playing too much "technical" and "demonstrative".

Ry Cooder is THE master of slide playing, but he is also a fabulous picking rhythm player.

I always found his rhyhtm/solo part on this song amazing, and close to Mark's rhythm style. When Guy often quotes a "seroius thumb" regarding mark's playing, I think that Ry is a very good challenger (and an obvious influence of course) :

other slide players that I love are :

Duane Allman : fabulous blues-rock player both on slide and fret playing. his lead part on dominoes's little wing is gorgeous
Mick Taylor : more melodic. very great and underrated guitarist. very tatestfull style imo
Derek Trucks : totally unique and recognisable sound, witth  DAT rake

Yeah sure.
Ry is the Slide Master.
He is a true great guitarist and musician.
Love his last 4 Studio albums.

Next month I go to a Sonny Landreth gig. Let's see what he has in his fingers

I really like everything Ry has done since Chavez Ravine. Somethings on the California trilogy albums are a bit "out there", but they are really interesting. Nice to see someone in his age not afraid of trying something new.

Sonny Landreth I'm not sure whether I like or not. Seems like a great guy and immensely talented, but somehow his playing doesn't touch MY soul.
