Title: MK Songs you don't expect on your radio...
Post by: Ian Lewis on August 12, 2008, 04:32:54 PM
My local radio (Pirate FM, Cornwall) played Lady Writer this morning.  Okay, so it was at the un-Godly hour of 6am,  :o but it was great to hear.  It was refreshing to hear instead of Money for Nothing or Sultans of Swing.  Of course that are great in their own rights, but for me not the only work Mark has ever done!  In fact not the first Straits record I have heard them play that time of the morning.

Anyone heard some lesser-known Straits/MK tracks on the radio recently?

Lady Writer gets played a lot on Radio 2 here in the UK.

I heard Whoop De Doo while buying a sofa the other day, that was kind of bizarre.

funny you say so ian, i had the same aha feeling hearing the exact same song at the same ungodly hour, just a month or 3,4 ago...
shall i change the topic in "rare radio appeareances"? and with rare i mean the songs.

That title might be more appropriate  :) It was really great, because I heard it at work, so it was a much needed boost!!!

I have been watching the Olympic Games Beach Volley Ball, and between points they play a whole bunch of short grabs from various artists including Dire Straits "Walk of Life".

A couple of months ago, a local radio station played Punish The Monkey. I was very surprised, considering I cannot ever remember hearing an MK solo song on commerical radio here in the US before that.

Is Iron Hand played live by Brendan Croker on local radio in The Netherlands a valid submission to this topic?  :-X

Chinese have different translations of Walk of life, things happen the same as Dire Straits translation, I must admit that's why they use the songs as back ground music.  But I feel really comfortable watching noon weather forecast with Why Worry as its background music.   :P

Wishes

Yes Allen WW is also one of my all-time favourites. I was sooooo happy that Mark played the extended outro version in 1986. Also features in one of my All-time favoutite Dire Straits Video moments. John was so impressed with Mark's solo in the "Thank-you Australia & NZ telecast, that he did the old double eye-brow salute at the end of it, just as Mark turned towards him. He was more or less saying "YES YOU NAILED IT!!!"

In the car today, I heard Lady Writer on Sirius Radio, Spectrum.  I often hear MK/DS songs on Spectrum and in one of the station's promos, listeners yell the names of artists they want to hear and it ends with a guy shouting, "More Mark Knopfler!"  So, if I'm not listening to an MK CD, I tune in to Spectrum.

OK, here's a first, and it's not radio.  While waiting to board a plane in the Oakland Airport yesterday, I am almost positive I heard the last bits of the chorus of Golden Heart in muzak form...or I think I did. A tenor sax played the melody with strings, etc. in the background.  I actually got out of my seat to get nearer to a speaker, but the tune was interrupted by a flight announcement and then it was over.  Is it possible it was Golden Heart?  If not, I am now imagining MK songs.  Oh dear.

I was just going to say "Lady writer" as well. When "Communique" first came out it was the first attempted US single off of the record...so I think it is still in many "classic rock" format stations libraries.

In a great spanish radio station called "Rock & Gol" (its a mix of great all time rock and roll, and sport news every 30 minutes) is very easy to hear the John Illsley with Greg Pearle and Cunla "money for nothing" version

Not on the radio, but great fun.  We went to a draft horse show this weekend.   Big old beautiful gentle guys pull coaches, wagons and so on.  They show at walk, trot, and back up to music.   A local pianist provided the accompaniment.  To my delight, during the "Four abreast" competition, I recognized Sultans of Swing in the first three notes.   Most unexpected.    And then, for frosting on the cake, during a demonstration between competitions, the pianist played the outro to What it Is.
