Title: Mark Knopfler - live cd/dvd release policy
Post by: Kay Edvin on March 01, 2009, 08:26:42 PM
Paul Crockford sent me this answer on e-mail an hour ago:

Dear Kay,

The decision to record or release CD's or DVD's is Mark's alone. It's something that we discuss on a regular basis but ultimately if it does happen it will be at Mark's behest.

Kind regards

PC

My question was something like:

Why does not Mark release more live cds/dvds? when other artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi does it after the tours.

Would it be futile to petition him to release Alchemy on DVD?

I really want a nice boxset with a big booklet, blah, blah....

Honestly, have Guy or Mark been urged to do this? What would be the best way to ask? Opinions pls.

Yes.

Do a search on Guy's forum, it's been asked plenty of times over the years, the answer always is that MK wants to look forward and not back.

I have just done the search you suggested. My God, i must say, i`m very surprised at the level of feeling against releasing it! Its akin to saying Beatles records shouldn`t be available because the drummings not perfect or something?

Just my opinion, but i think the whole `official` attitude is a bit pretensious. I guess i`ll just hunt down a download thingy then and make my own bl@@dy boxset! :-\

The answer is really simple - MK doesn't need to keep releasing back catalogues. It would be a cheap shot to raise funds from the past.

Thats a pretty pathetic answer in my opinion. Sorry.

I`m just off to burn all my Beatles CDs as they didn`t really need to re-release them.....

You can't compare Mark to the Beatles or anyone. Mark is the 'real' good guy of music. Hi is 'incomparable'.

He doesn't need to do anything - whatever he does seems to be (in my opinion) for his love of music. A true music lover and perfectionist (as he is) wouldn't be going round selling his resurrected wares just to make a fast buck. If the 'Beatles' do this then that's their choice but I fancy it's their record labels calling the tune there. In fact doesn't Michael Jackson own the Beatles back catalogue copyright? He bought it about 10-15 years ago I seem to remember. Now he DOES need the money:-)

Not quite, he owns the publishing rights to the songs.

if there's 1 artist in the world who is great in developing and changing studio versions when playing live
it's MK

so I don't like at all his VERY conservative decisions about live releases

Hmm, not sure I would agree with this statement. Most of the songs aren't really all that different when done live. And not only that, it's basically the same set played the same way just about every night.

Compare with Bob Dylan whose songs are often almost unrecognisable due to different arrangements.

and many different shows, every night, EVERY night.

Is it the arrangements...or the vocals these days?
