Great version, Mark seemed a little nervous...

Performed beautifully -- I really liked this a lot.  Mark's voice is perfect.

Is it the earliest known performance by MK?

One of the rare occasion when he sang it. I only know one other time he took the vocal on it, at a Ronnie Scott gig on July 27 1998 when Brendan had lost his voice.

He sang better when he smoked.  His voice got worse after he stopped! :hmm

Solo always sounded better to me in the 1990 versions.  The later ones were full of extra twiddly bits that weren't needed and I personally preferred the tone from the Pensa-Suhr in 1990.

He sang better when he smoked.

I´d assume you may have this opinion exclusively...

Agree with you. Quite frankly, I haven't expected to hear such a thing. It's been just like a balm for a tormented soul.

I seriously mean it.  Listen to the only other time he sang it after he gave up on 27.07.98 and you'll hear the difference.  Listen to songs like R&J or Sultans that he performed just before giving up in '96, then listen to them now...

His voice is better than ever these days, but I still enjoy the old gravelly voice too!   Best of both worlds!  ;)

I wouldn't exactly say his voice is smooth as silk these days.  Maybe once it is worked over in the studio!  He did put a lot more effort into it back then though and although it sounded gravelly it didn't sound like it was disappearing as it does now.

Of course it isn't really evident so much in this song as he merely whispers it.  He really isn't the person to do this justice IMO, his limitations clearly evident where he has to repeat parts of the lyrics.
