Former Dire Straits bassist John Illsley has announced the release on 13 May of his sixth solo album, Long Shadows, on Creek Touring & Records. It's the follow-up to 2014's Testing The Water and the subsequent Live In London set.

Illsley jokes: “I have been working on these songs for 18 months – no point in rushing!” But in reality, he has been in highly productive form in recent years: he made his first two solo records while Dire Straits were at their 1980s peak, 1984's Never Told A Soul and Glass in 1988. But the new release will be his fourth studio project, including 2008's Beautiful You with Greg Pearle, in just eight years.

Illsley sings lead vocals, plays bass and acoustic guitar on all of the album's eight tracks, and recorded Long Shadows at his former bandmate and close friend Mark Knopfler's British Grove Studios, as well as at Room With A View and A Bay Studios. There are guest appearances by another longtime Dire Straits and Knopfler collaborator, Guy Fletcher, who co-produced the album with John; by electric guitarist Simon Johnson, whose credits include Lana Del Rey and James Morrison; and by Illsley’s children Jess and Dee Dee, who sing backing vocals.

John notes that the album's lyrical themes address “the obvious political and social elements which have always concerned me. 'In The Darkness,' for example is a take on the internet and how it seduces us all in some ways, but particularly those young people who get influenced to join radical religious groups.”

Illsley will play live with his band at the Half Moon in Putney, London, on 1 April, before embarking on an extensive tour of Holland and Germany for the rest of April and into early May. Full dates are here.

The track listing for Long Shadows is as follows:

1 'Morning'
 2 'In The Darkness'
 3 'Comes Around Again'
 4 'There’s Something About You'
 5 'Ship Of Fools'
 6 'Lay Me Down'
 7 'Long Shadows'
 8 'Close To The Edge'

It's a shame that MK didn't spent some tasty licks-

I really enjoy his solo work. It's a kind of layd-back rock wich suits my preferences.

Awesome, thanks ! So Phil Palmer is not persona non grata in British Grove after TOTT ??

JI's albums have top-notch musicianship, and the arrangements are great, but I just can't get into his voice!  He has a voice made for backing vocals.  I don't find the lyrics that great either.

The album he did with Greg Pearle was superb, IMO.  Better than some of Mark's solo stuff.

I like the song but I find the adlibs she sings in the end rather annoying. I hope she won't be overdoing it live...  :-\

I like Illsley's stuff, I do. However... It all sounds the same. The same soft shuffling beats and at least one unexpected chord in the progression.  :lol

I like Illsley's voice, and I like his music as it is. I don´t expect the same from him than from MK, and John´s music is ok for me, makes me feel great when listening.

For those attending John's tour, this is more or less the setlist for the first concert yesterday in Groningen: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/john-illsley/2016/de-oosterpoort-groningen-netherlands-5bf1bb20.html
It was a good concert, really enthousiastic crowd. New songs are great, as were Tunnel of Love, Calling Elvis, Expresso Love and the Bug. On the biggest hits I did miss Mark though and On Every Street and Romeo And Juliet were the least songs I think. The background singer just overdid it a bit sometimes and sang where she really wasn't needed. Overall, fun night!

Was there too. Nice concert, especially his solo songs. The DS songs seem to miss something obviously. 5 songs from the new album were played and I liked them very much. I bought the album before the concert, in fact I bought the first sale of the world! Afterwards me and my dad had a chat with John and he signed our cd's and took a picture with us.

Enjoyed it and I think all others going will too.

Those of you who have seen John live this year: does he play only bass or also guitar at the shows?

Well, not to rub it in your face, but it's a nice record. I especially love the song Long Shadow.
Actually all 5 songs he played live from the album are pretty cool.

Just listened John's new album, 'Long Shadows'. Man, this is great... makes me think it's Mark who wrote all of the songs and gave it to John.
You can't get more DS-like songs than this, so if you a desperate for a DS reunion, this is a perfect album for you. Anyway, great songs! :clap

Indeed! I do listen Long Shadows instead of Altamira of MK. Most horrible album MK ever made, it looked like he made only film music and didn't add his own style and taste.

Well, if you look carefully you will see that Altamira was made for the movie with the same name :-) I do think he added his own taste and style. Listen to Altamira, or Maria. Totally MK.

I agree, holaknopfler - this is definitely Knopfler's style.   I love all of the Knopfler tracks, but the one that sticks in my mind is Onward, for some reason.  I find myself humming it to myself and then realise it's Onward!    The other MK tracks are typical MK and very beautiful.   I admire Evelyn Glennie's tracks too, but they spoil the flow for me, so I made a separate playlist with just MK tracks, which works very well as a complete MK work.   I can also listen to the original when I feel in that particular mood!   :)

In June the film will be available in DVD and BR, surely before IT was shown in the rest of the world in cinemas.
