Title: Mark`s headband
Post by: ybot on April 18, 2016, 12:05:02 PM
I guess he started wearing it by the end of 1982
There was a story about his headband.
He met by chance a profesional tennis player Guillermo Vilas in a London Music store in 1982
Both Mark and Vilas were fans eachother, they became close friends
As you remember, Vilas is known to wear headbands to plaay tennis. He gave Mark his own headband as a present
Mark stated wearing it ever since, until he lost all his hair
I believe, there must be more info about
warm regards
ybot

MK has stated that he wore the headband for no reason other than keeping the sweat out of his eyes and face.  Venue lights were very hot in those days. When new technology brought cooler lights, he did not have to wear the headband.

I came accross this site 2 days ago. It caught my interest.
I have been a member of another forum, guitar playing related because I play the guitar.
At this forum I found many questions and answers I always wanted to know.
I apologize for not writting as an englishman

I didn't know the story behind the headband (with the tennis player), so I enjoyed this thread  :wave

I am making a try to ask Vilas, a cousing of mine has got his email address.
Vilas is a musician too, he recorded a couple of albums.
The actual story might come from G Vilas if he spoke up

Any knows when was the first and the last time mark wore a headband?

I believe, the first was at the beginning of 1983 or at Alchemy.
The last I guess was in 1993 Zaragoza at OES tour.

My opinion, I know you you the exact dates

Knopfler began using the headband in March 1983, when Dire Straits were doing the LOG tour in Australia.
Here I have some pictures

Already in 1982 he did not use the headband, as we can see in these photos:

The "headband" he wore during the OES didn't seem to display any sweat absorbing properties.....looked more like a piece of thin (long) material tied around his bonce....!

I think he said that by that stage the lights had evolved and weren't as hot, therefore no need for a proper sweat band. It was more of a bandana really. Keith Richards wears something similar these days. :)

By the way I wore reeeeally long hair about 6 years ago and I must admit that I had to put on the headband, not because I'm a fan of MK (he never wore reeeeally long hair anyway), but just because I wasn't even able to eat properly with hair like this. Not to mention playing live! And the reason why I got so long hair is just because I'm lazy.

Yep I think his OES headband was more of stage prop a bit like Brian Wilsons piano.

While I am sure that the sweatband had a very practical purpose, I believe it became a stage prop (and 'security blanket', of sorts).

I think so too!

Mark has stated in interviews he started to wear it because of the hot lights, and just sweating a lot. He is not as energetic on stage now as he was back in the day, so he doesn't need to wear it. If it was a security blanket type thing he would still wear it, so I don't think that was ever the reason.

Pretty sure he dropped it on 96 to emphasise that he was solo now - the headband was DS.

I agree! May I suggest "I would like to discuss Mark's headband." As it is, it could about almost anything.
