Mark say in interview it is important respect your talent and maybe he don't do this when he was younger. Maybe he was thinking about talent of sognwriting?
But I think is sad or like kontradiction that he makes not so strong effort for guitar play now. I do not mean 20 minute solo, that is old and boring. But he play very simple now. No developmend or a finesse. I think he is not respect his gitar talent.

Learn what does "struggling" means.

I think for Mark its more about respecting the song now. I'm sure if he deemed that a new song required a 28 minute guitar solo he would do so accordingly.
Incidentally I don't buy into the idea that he is no longer capable on the instrument, listen to the first 12 bars of Playtime Deluxe, as a guitar player myself I can safely say that there are still some awesome 'chops' lurking in those fingers :).....

I disagree. He play strong, with good passion, which is always a good thing. But if we look at smmooth playing, it is not. I am honest, I hear better guitarist at local jam sessien. MK is world class artist, but I think he neglecting his guitar talent. He has not growed in guitar for many years. He need new Chet Adkins.

Mark once said clearly that "Song is king", although over the years he surely developed a strong facility both for writing AND for playing.
He answered your question in this golden and low-resolution video from 2001:

I tend to agree with Polizei's point to an extent and have said so in the past, although not with those words. I do not recall the interview where he said this "respect your talent" quote, but Mark has been known to contradict himself. IMHO he simply doesn't practice often enough and this is probably due to his love-affair with the guitar being over. This became apparent to me when I heard him say "the song is king." The irony is that I don't think he is as good a songwriter these days.

eins_zwei_polizei, Oxford english dictonary is your friend : struggle (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/struggle)
@2manyguitars : There is a difference between playing a one off 30 minutes long gig and doing an 80 times x 2 hours longs.

The "respect your talent" quote came from a interview during the Golden Heart area I believe, I'll try to find it.

The main problem is not pratice, believe me.
The main problem is that his classics like Sultans or Telegraph were played extremely fast in the Dire Straits years up to 1992.
The more the time passes the more he is uncapable of playing that fast, it's just normal and physiological at his age.
There's absolutely nothing he can do.
Perhaps physically that is the case (and that doesn't necessarily bother me) but he can still practise more I believe and make his playing better.

I don't talk about long solo, or faster solo, but new repertoar. About 1990 MK had many time together Chet Atkins and many new licks for On Evry Street CD. In 1982 about he learnt jazz. What new he learn from 2000? He has megatalent for guitar but does not make developmend.
He get older, it is no problem for me. I eccept he is not fast or less strong then before, but I hear he play same licks as always before.

Great words but I'm just not sure... I believe he CAN play, only is what HE wants or like to play now. Who can say what would one like when come to his age? My advice is just to enjoy in what he gives as a Great Artist in the given moment.
Anyway "He don't care if we like it or if we not, never did much care about if we will or won't."

:)

So my teori is that he don't give respect to guitar talent and make contradiction.
It is ok. He has a right. But for me it is irritation. :)
-
I would say - Something to pick for anyone to enjoy to throughout his long time - LifeTime - career.
Well, I pick everything.

I think in earlier days MK had a strong focus on guitar playing which meant that he practised a lot and developing guitar parts/licks/melodies were a very prominent part of his songwriting. Somewhere in his solo career (probably during the STP period) I think he has lost that focus. It could very well be that this has something to do with him getting older, losing the souplesse in his fingers and avoiding struggling with it as a consequense. When it is gets to live performances I once read an interview with Hal Lindes and he said MK was constantly trying to improve upon the perfect solo's for the songs, which meant that he played for 90% the same notes on each subsequent night and experimenting in little parts to get it even better. Nowadays it's nothing like that, he's just improvising for the most part. This results in something far from perfect, even quite bad at times because both mind and fingers work at such slower pace. Also keeping the same songs in the setlist night after night and tour after tour does not help either, it would be a miracle to remain truly inspired. Just some thoughts...

Some examples from where Mark say about respect talent.
Thanks. To be precise, he doesn't actually specify which talent.
"When you’re a kid, you’re not even thinking about that stuff. You’re just ramming through everything. I did learn eventually — perhaps far too late — to respect the talent I have."

Everyone is different.

And once more time: Playing fast does not make great guitarist and does not really matter. But not development come from not too much attention and pracitse. MK make minimal effort.
-
Jesse Kornbluth: So, from the vantage point of the olden days, as best you can see it, what’s your future?
MK: Hopping from one slippery stone to the next, until it ends in tears.

Albert Lee is a great guitarist.

So, some of you want to say that Mark can't play some of his songs anymore?
-
Just listen to any Sultans or Hill Farmer from 2015 and then ask again... ::)

He can play everything but not all of them properly.

well, that is the point actually, he CAN play if he wants, the only question is what he wants to play.

As you look around this room tonight
Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears
What do you want
What do you want from me
Should I sing until I can't sing any more
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
You're so hard to please
What do you want from me
That is why I enjoy Pink Floyd as well.
These verses explain what I think when it comes to this issue.
If you have got your own vision what is the PROPER play why don't you just take a guitar and play it or practice it yourself - until your fingers get raw. What do you want from Mark?
Do you respect your own guitar talent?
:)

You answered yourself. Better that you don't listen to me playing the guitar. But I have a strong excuse, I'm NOT Mark Knopfler, I have not his talent.
The only thing I ask him is to keep the dream on as long as he can.
-
Then it's all fine. I'm content by the way he plays btw.
:thumbsup

Some think Mark is older now and cannot play guitar as fast anymore...
I rather wonder if possibly modern stage lights have to do with it: these are mostly LEDs and do not cause much heat - the reason Mark does not need the headband anymore. Me for sure cannot play really fast with cold fingers !!
In the studio everything still sounds very fluent to me, much more than on some live recordings from recent tours. And maybe Mark avoids those fancy licks in the studio, too, as they might not be reproducable for him under non-optimum stage conditions ..? Just a thought :think

Interesting. On a lot of the warmer shows (according to Guy's diary) his playing generally seem more fluid to me... :think
