Title: Top players - Vintage Guitar Magazine
Post by: junkiedoll on November 08, 2016, 09:48:36 AM
Mark listed rank 14th in a recent poll by vintage Guitar (December 2016 issue). Usual suspects in the front but nice to see that Mark is there (in particular given it was a readers poll).

Let the holy war begin... again, again and again.

I wouldn't say David and Mark are the best, they have the best sound or touch... maybe... there should be lists for all kinds of those — 100 guitarists with best touch, 100 fastest guitarists, 100 fastest blues guitarists (Hey, Joe!), 100 best guitar innovators, 100 best acoustic fingerpicking guitarists, 100 best jazz guitarists, 100 best gypsy guitarists...

In other words, every one can get his ?1 place in "the best" category, it's just his personal list. Like, "List of 1 best Tommy Emmanuels".

Or better yet — List of "1 best Mark Knopflers" with Mark on the first place. I'd be happy to see that.

To help mark its 30th year of publication, VG asked readers to submit a list of their five favorite guitarists via written ballots and online. We tabulated the votes and here offer up the top 100 vote-getters in order of overall popularity.

Oh, give me a break! This is a list of guitar players made for their fans to insult each other, who cares who made it and for what reason.

It's like to take a list of songs, which Mark played the most, and the Sultans obviously would be on the top of the list «TOP 10 Mark Knopfler songs*». Who cares, that it's the most played songs? Sultans is ?1, so 95% would assume that it's his best song. People are so... people.

* played live by Mark Knopfler

The point is the list says not "best guitar player".

Come on guys, he took 14th place in a popularity contest among the readers, that makes me pretty happy since I thought he would score lower.

And, of course, these lists don't mean anything at all. But then again, nothing in this life ever means anything.
