Title: Anyone noticed.! Adverts on 'The official Mark Knopfler News website'
Post by: Best Brown Baggies on May 17, 2009, 09:34:12 PM
Hi all. I hadn't been on the other site for a while now, but logged in today to find that there is advertising on the posts of the fans forum. :o :o
I know this was always something that everyone was very against when TK mentioned doing it a while ago, and alot of us forumers pledged money to keep it advert free.
Strange no mention of it on the other site, unless i've missed it.
Just wondering if it's had to be done, because the majority of us fans are on AMIT now. ;)

Cheers   BBB

Eg.

Click on Discussion, then on any topic title.

On the right hand side of the topic post, there is a small square of advertising. (ads by google)

My husband has them on his PC, but I haven't.  How very odd!! ::)

A thought occurred - maybe it's because I have Vista?   ???

I got the ads yesterday.
Another forum I'm on for another subject also recently went to ads, and it is also on Yuku, so maybe there's a connection there.

no ads for me. while on the subject of MK News, I noticed that Terry had amended the announcing of the tour dates to "Tour dates for 2010 are likely to be 'rolled out' from around the same time as the album is released" (from tour dates will be announced). It will be the same cr*p as last year, not knowing where to book, because not knowing if tomorrow, they are going to announce they are playing in my back garden.

In that case the banner should be changed to say "Unofficial" !

because they're not the official artist website (as opposed to the markknopfler.com site)? because he can't stand TK? I don't know, but I was under the impression that this site was kind of official, at least when I first discovered it 4 or 5 years ago, maybe this has changed since?

But it says Official on ALL pages, not just the Fans' forum, which I have always understood to be "The Official Fans' Forum".

I've gotten the ads too, and I'm glad someone referenced it because I thought our donations last year would have prevented such junk.  It is really annoying  and dimishes the site.  >:(

The answer is quite simple. When Terry started the site, it was started as the official site for news regarding Mark Knopfler & relatives, supported by Ed Bicknell and Damage Management, in fact all the news came directly from the official sources.

From 1996 an official MK site existed created by Mercury records, but only with promotion purposes with the Golden heart record, the same happened with the rest of the records. The site was www.mark-knopfler.com, which is right now the site where someone talks about herbals and those things and claimed as a false Mk site by the official sources. It looks that the domain was abbandoned and bought by someone that is making a dubtous use of the domain.

Then, a canadian company built the mark knopfler official site, supported by the record company (probably some companies tried to get that work, and the canadian got the work), with more contents than the others site supported by the record company and with a new domain www.markknopfler.com, and what

nsking, to be fair the contributions were made in October 2007 (you can look at the list of contributors on the site) and covered a subscription to keep the site ad free for 12 months. I guess TK may have made a similar plea for contributions in Sept/Oct 2008, but we had all deserted the site by then, so he never raised anything like the $550 or so necessary to keep it ad free for this year.

Just to be clear: I haven't deserted the other site at all.  I like them both. I am surprised we made those donations way back in '07.  Time sure flies when you're Mark-ing time.
