just booked tickets for a David Knopfler show in my hometown (not where come from, but where i live now) in Ratingen (near D

Give us report how the concert went. ;)

Like you say, it would be silly not to go. I would definitely go and watch him if he played in my home town. I wouldn't travel far to watch him but I quite like what I have heard from him.

It is always the same: Everytime I will give him credit and try to listen to a DK album, I can

Pottel, David is brilliant in his own way, actually I would say that what Mark is doing now, is what David is doing since 1993 when he released his record "The giver", then "Small mercies" that to me is a jewel, and "Wishbones" was really really great. The rest of records were the same kind of good songwritting.
I know they are very different, but the funny thing to me is that they ended doing the same kind of music and songwritting, with his differences, but the same roots and the same music flavour, but Dave arrived first ;D
If you can record the show, it will be great, I

I agree with you jbeant. They have such a big influence on each other and I hope to see them play together once again. Being a David Knopfler fan, maybe I

Look at that...just found out he'll be playing in NYC on October 7th. The only thing is that it's at a club I swore I would never go back to. Plus they want $25+fees. :o

Hey Pottel,
that is quite cool. My brother-in-law went to DM in Munich and was very enthusiastic about it. I hope you didn

Probably, David is not his brother in that aspect LOL

A friend of mine once asked David via email whether she can attend a soundcheck. He went mad and insulted her, David is not like his brother...MK would never do that, even if he refuses something MK stays polite.
Oh, and better not mentioning to David you're a fan of his brother...oh boy! :(
-
lol, thanks for that... ;D

Me? A fan of whom? David? I don't know, he was only involved in the very beginning of DS. But he got out of line, especially when my friend mentioned his brother. Otherwise, I don't care.

Actually I had a few conversations by mail with David, some of them including DS or hi brother Mark, and he was always very kind, even you can see very clearly he is not very comfortable talking about it.
I never had a bad experience mailing him, really, in the contrary.
-
well, i will keep yall posted...

I had planned to go to the show in Viersen, unfortunately it's sold out (already). :-[ Maybe somewhere else...

PS: we were to attend the f1 race in Spa and used the possibility to go to the biggest music store in Europe. To watch out for a drum kit...

Ah, thanks! ;D I'll check if I can go to the show in verviers, who knows! :D
-
so? how was it?
-
i sent one last mail to him explaining the difference between piracy and us hardcore fans, and reffered to our earlier mails, where i asked permission to film. now e simply replied that he does not want me to film, full stop, no comment to the rest of my mail, i feel really disgusted by this attitude.
do they not realise we are their capital?
it is in 2 hours...
-
Funny, taking my seat in front row. But apparantly my seat has been double booked. Thing is, there's an orchestra row one totally up front, and one "other" row one, 2 rows behind that. I got the good one :-)
-
Wdr 2 is here, looks like tthey are filming and audio recording!!
-
Awesome, he is playing bernadette right now! Feel like i am warped back to 1977!
-
I thought it was yesterday! Stop writing Pottel and enjoy the show! You can write a review tomorrow!
-
i actually did, was surprised about how much i actually liked it.
there were some songs where his voice simply did not fit, but that is my opinion, in general i really liked his arrangements and interaction with the audience, and it was bizarre to see him play Bernadette (!!), what'S the matter with you baby, wild west end, and stuff...
then at the end, i had brought my specially acquired cd's and my ticket, and he signed them all, and then took the time to have a pic made of us, and at the end, when most others were gone, he took a few minutes for a brief chat,...i avoided the mention of the letters M....K.... but besides that, he was really friendly, especially when i mentioned i had bought that book of his about the recording industry (can't remember the title now) ages ago.
will do it again.
all that disturbed me, as mentioned, was his voice in some songs, whereas i really liked it in others.
oh and i met a forum member from the netherlands, jeffrey, now he told me his nick, but in all the excitement i forgot, so jeffrey,....pls help me...:-)
it was cool meeting you too.
-
Here we are, back in town! :D Was nice to meet you too Pottel! ;)
The show was very nice imo, although the seating didn't really fit the music DK makes, standing would have been better I guess (but that doesn't affect the music in any way). A friend of mine made a few pictures with his camera, which he left at my place. But, guess what: the camera has an alternative connector inside and even the memory stick itself is not usable outside the camera... :-\ So, I can look at them tomorrow (and I'll send the pictures to you too Pottel)... :)
Highlights were Bernadette, What's the matter baby and Wild west end. I was surprised to see (hear) WWE coming by!
Most of the people immediately left after the show, and a DK show wouldn't be a DK show if there was no time for autographs! DK was so kind to sign a few CD's I bought there (the first time I saw Small Mercies in real life) and join for a picture.
I'll post more info tomorrow. :)
-
lol, localhero of course, how could i forget...thanks for arranging the pics. as promised i will arrange you the poster.
-
Glad to here the show went well. It's a shame that he keeps coming back to the same awful NYC venue, which is why I have never gone to see him. Get this though...TM shows that David Knopfler is going to play in NYC again on 5/1/2010. MK will be playing a few days later on 5/6/2010 just across town.
-
It's interesting to learn that he plays Wild West End. Wonder if he had to ask brother or he can play whatever from the first two Straits records without asking permission.
-
Maarten, do you dare to give him a Dire Straits or Communique ablum to sign?

I would give him a Making Movies album to sign. That would be funny.

He also played Bruce Springsteens Tougher than the rest and Games people play by Joe South. I doubt playing a song from his early days is a problem.
It was interesting to hear (while tuning his guitars before every song) some background information about the songs as well. He wrote "Southside tenements" in the mid 70's and planned it to be on the first album, which didn't happen.
After the first DK show I attended (Weert, de Bosuil), someone wanted to have his 1st DS album signed, which was not a problem at all!
Just before the show started, I bought a few DK albums at the show (Small Mercies and the Giver which I've been looking for for years, and the new Compilation). DK was kind enough to sign all the CD's, taking a picture or two. :D I hope to post some pictures tonight. :)
P.S. @ Pottel: thanks! That's very kind! :D

Hi Dan,

I love your avatar BTW - the best city in the world bar none :P :P

And two pictures of DK on stage: http://img9.imageshack.us/i/dsc00665vc.jpg/ & http://img9.imageshack.us/i/dsc00666rm.jpg/
These are the few pictures I actually could copy from the camera at this moment (the most important ones!), it takes about 5 minutes per picture to copy to the computer due to some parameter problems. :-\

thanks LH1986, sweet memory...

Nice reports boys, I

No, the show on dimeadozen is from Hamburg (01-11-2009). Unfortunately no filming was allowed. But that doesn't mean that there is no video recording of some songs (if you know what I mean). ;)
WWE: http://rapidshare.com/files/302795240/MOV00682.MPG.html (It's not my videoclip btw)

Thanks for the reviews and the pics guys

Come on guys, you're not asking me to do this next Thursday are you? Btw, it's the only DS album I don't have... ::)

Did any of you recorded this show by the way? ;)
-
Nope, I don't have an audio recording of the show (only a few movieclips but it takes one-and-a-half year to load 'em up). The only (complete) show is Hamburg (01-11) on dime.
-
I badly want to see DK live.
He's the only orig DS member i havn't met yet and got their autograph.
Mark, John & Pic have all signed my 1st DS cd cover.
I'll just have to keep checking his site for tour news in the UK.
Any idea what part of the country he lives?
I 've heard he may live in the Suffolk area, which isn't too far from me. ( not that i'm gonna knock on his door) :o ;D
Cheers BBB
-
I heard he lives in The Lake District, but I think he has lived in Suffolk too. :)
-
he is the easiest to get to sign your stuff though, was really surprised, there i sat, next to the man himself, for what felt like ages, chatting a bit.
-
Indeed, signing a few things is not a problem at all. I still have a telecaster (not a real fender, but still the same shape). Maybe I'll take of the pickguard for next Thursday. :P

Well, what can I say? A great gig again! I could not stand too close today (only 10 cm's from the stage and 1m from DK). ;D Nice setlist with WWE, Bernadette and WTMB. Sounding fresh and really like the early DS days, contrary to SOS nowadays.... Setlist completed with beautiful songs from various DK albums. Can't remember every song of it, must have been something like this:
Steel wheels / Wild west end / Rabbit song / Cinnamon girls / Lonely is the night / When we kiss / A father and a son / unknown (new song, sounding like early DS) / Bernadette / What's the matter baby / (break) / God's mockingbird / St. swithuns day / Somebody kind / Southside tenements / America / How many times / Tears fall / All I want is you / Easy street / Drowning pool / Thougher than the rest / can't remember the song that followed, but beautiful (sorry) / Games people play
At the end, I bought a CD (ship of dreams deluxe edit) and had it signed, as well as the pickguard of my telecaster (remake, not a real fender though) and a tour poster! Although there were only about 70 people before the break and (maybe) 40 left after the break... :-\ It was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. I'll post some of the pictures of signed stuff here soon. :)
-
Thanks for your review again!
Wow, 30 people left during break (out of 70!), that's a little sad for an artist, I guess. It wouldn't be surprising at the start of your career but after 30 years in business it must be discouraging.
-
hey jeffrey, i got your poster on monday, you still want it? or did you now get that same poster in Recklinghausen?
-
Thank you both for the pictures and your review of the show! ;)
Fieneke

Thanks. ;) The DK tele:
(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2919/dsc05667bn.th.jpg) (http://img5.imageshack.us/i/dsc05667bn.jpg/)
And now I have Ship of dreams / Songs for the siren / The anthology / The giver / Small mercies signed by the man himself! ;D Hope to get the rest signed during next shows (if he still does). :P
@ Pottel: well, it's the same poster as the one in Ratingen. If you want to have the poster yourself that's of course all right. ;) But still thanks. Oh btw, Pottel, send me your full name and adress by PM, got a nice recording for you in return. :)
