Hi there!
I'll be attending a MK show at the RAH in London next year, therefore I'm looking for accomodation in surrounding areas - not too expensive, if possible. Last time in London I had a room at the Thistle City Hotel (http://www.thistle.com/hotels/united_kingdom/london/thistle_city_barbican/index.html EC1V8, Central Street/Finsbury) - quite alright, but alternative suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks in advance!

We stayed in the Travelodge Marylebone. Good value, near to the tubestation. And breakfast outdoor, much nicer :D
-
I was thinking about the Marylebone again as well Ingrid.
Have you booked it for the 1st 2 nights yet, or are you going to wait nearer the time.?
Cheers BBB
-
I didn't book yet, but will look one of these days. And I wait till there are saverrooms for 19 or 29 GBP :D
-
Thank you! I'll look into it.
-
i looked today at Marylbone... the price is 45 GBP for saverrooms.
ingrid, do you really think the price will become cheaper ?
They offer this time an all-you-can-eat breakfast for 5,99 GBP. Ingrid, did you have bad experiences as you recommend to take the breakfast outside ?

INgrid let me know when you find the room i'll book with you if you don't mind
-
@ Nelly: I will book a room for you as soon as the price is right ;)
@ Joko: Last year I had a room for GBP 29. In Edinburgh I had a room for 19 GBP. So I hope it will become cheaper. Lot of time to go and for 45 GBP you can book a lot of places I think.
I like to have breakfast outside, never had it in Travelodge. I just prefer a cosy place instead of a hotel, like somewhere on Coventgarden. In hotels it's most of the times a big not personal room with lots of people around.

Yeah Coventgarden Or Portobello road :D
Full English breakfast oh gosh i want one now :D

Covent Garden is the most tourist place I know in London, especially on weekends...they are waiting to rip off tourists ;-)

I am used to get ripped off ;D
But in the morning having breakfast there is nice.

No, Ingrid you are not! Too smart for that... ;) but it is a completely different view when you live in London and go to work or stay as a tourist. Don't get me wrong, I love London, but it is very pricy and I know most of the advantages and disadvantages now. And still learning...just to give you an idea: the first 2 bedroom flat that we rented in London was 850 quid...per week! :o
-
Because of the price I would never want to live in London. The rent is idiot. But I love to visit London every now and then and like all big cities, you know you get ripped off sometimes. But I don't care to pay 1 or 2 quid more for the same breakfast when I like to sit on a place. I don't like the big breakfastrooms in the hotels, sometimes I have to deal with it, but when possible I like to go outside the hotel and find me a nice place. When you live there it's different, you know all places better, you get sick of the tourists every now and then, especially when you're in a hurry (same here in Holland at some places in summer ::))
-
I think we will stay at the Imperial College London - Beit Hall it seems like a great Hotel and very close to RAH.

It is fantastic to live in London, when you can afford it....but you are so right, renting or buying in London is very expensive. But a house MK used to live in Chelsea would cost GBP 10000 to 15000 per week. Just to see the difference here. :-\ Compared to that our flat was cheap rental ;)

Back in 1998 or 1999 during the NHB period Marijn, Anna and I stayed in Cartwright Gardens once, never again...it was disgusting. Be careful...that was also a College.

I booked the Travelodge Marylebone Hotel for tow night, unfortunatly it was not possible to have saverrooms for two nights.
But we don't mind, it is our first time in London so we go discovering london saturday.
-
i will stay at a friends/colleague's place. both for the prince's trust gig as for the RAH gigs.
it is good to have friends in cities like london or paris.
;D

Hey!
Thank you for the input so far! Can somebody tell me if the Travelodge City Road EC1Y 1AE is recommendable? I'm just interested in a clean room ensuite, possible noise from the street or a sparse breakfast won't be an issue for me.

Oh - and I was wondering if there is a realistic possibility to catch a black cab after the concert is finished (Sunday evening) in the surrounding area of the Royal Albert Hall? Or is it better to pre-order a minicab by phone?
Thank you!

I don't know about this particular Travelodge, but I can say that Travelodge is a very large chain with fairly uniform standards, some hotels will have been redecorated more recently than other but generally they are all of a decent standard and good value for money.
Certianly every Travelodge I've ever stayed in (and it's quite a few) has always had en-suite rooms, I would say that's a definite. Sometimes the offer a hot breakfast but usually I find it's better to find a nearby cafe.
-
Yes, I agree Travelodges are of a consistent quality and unless you want a full English Breakfast with all the works, I wouldn't bother going outside to a cafe, because what they provide is fine for me! :) Not all of them do breakfast, though - remember Hereford, dusty? :) Sainsbury's cafe across the road came to the rescue! ;D

I had actually forgotten about Hereford but now you mention it we went to Sainsbury's too. :)
Quite often they don't offer a hot breakfast at all, and my experience of the ones the DO offer (Edinburgh for example) is that it's OK, but not great, better to step outside and find a greasy spoon IMO. :)
-
We went to the Ibis in Edinburgh and it was really good. They even made a hot snack for us after midnight on the evening of the show! :)
-
Okay. I think I'll try Travelodge City Rd, it's a real pain to get a decent hotel in London town. By the way, this looks really great, although it is a more expensive one: http://www.hoxtonhotels.com/ .
But what about getting back after the show? I've been using the tube quite often, but my attendance prefers driving by taxi in the evening.
These two links could be of interest for any potential taxi customer:

Perhaps someone is interested in sharing a taxi?
