Born with the dinosaurs (though not as old as Val)...1950
MK fan since 2001-STP Tour knocked my socks off. Hubby introduced me to DS in 1979-SOS on the radio. Helped make me want to marry my hubby. Sexy, rockin' stuff! Liked and was intrigued by DS/MK, but got hopelessly hooked during live gig.
Love:
My family (hubby, 2 sons, daughter-in-law and doggie)
My friends
MK, DS, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Richard Thompson, Rodney Crowell, The Who, Loreena McKennitt, Bruce Springsteen, early Stones, Eagles, Moody Blues, Annie Lennox, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Gipsy Kings, Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Romantics, Beatles, George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Mozart, Telleman, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Native American Music......
Gardening, making jewelry, mosaics, painting furniture, working with dogs, photography, re-arranging my furniture, shopping for bargains, cyber-surfing, participating on my favorite forums...........
That's all for now!

Thanks, Gayle! I still feel 27 though, especially at Amsterdam when I did the 100 metre sprint with the others! ;D Although some days I feel 97! LOL
-
Val, I think we're all young in the mind-if not the body. Sad, but true.
I asked my hubby how he thought I'd look in the swimsuit the female divers wore during Olympic springboard diving...("Here's Gayle Snyder-USA-58 years old-doing the triple back flip with one and a half twist!"). He was a good boy and did not answer! LOL!

Hi all.
My name is Nigel Dignum. I'm a very young looking 40yr old. ;D
I live in a small village in Norwich, England, with my wife & 2 children.
I have been a die hard fan of Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler from the very start.
I am the manager of a shoe shop selling designer brands, and have been for nearly 20 years.
My love of MK's music has followed me through school, college, work & beyond. Anybody who has known me the last 30 years, knows me as a massive & passionate fan, who can't go a day without mentioning the word Knopfler at least 10 times.
I have seen him play live about 20 times. The first time in 85 with DS, & of course i've seen him as a solo artist, and with the NHB's. I have seen him 5 times this year on the KTGC Tour
My fave songs are. SOS, TR, SHS, WII, BLT.
I love his new album KTGC. Best solo record to date imho.
Also i count his soundtrack music amongst his best work.
I have a Dire Straits tattoo on my upper right arm of the guitar logo used on DS 1st 3 albums. The red & white guitar with Dire Straits written in joined up writing throughout, and i have recently added another, the word 'KNOPFLER' written as it is on the SL album, on my lower left arm. :-)
I was lucky enough to meet MK in Newcastle this year at a M&G. It was a life long dream to meet him, get his autograph, shake his hand and say thanks.
Last month i celebrated, along with Ingrid from Holland, a joint 40th Birthday Party, in which we hired the UK's TOP Dire Straits tribute band, called 'Dire Fakes'
It was an evening i will never forget, with MK forum members in attendance too.
Might add some more to this later.
Cheers BBB

Jacki here.
I should be in bed, I have surgery tomorrow!!
Born in New England several lifetimes ago. Have lived in every New England state except Rhode Island, and I slept there. (Gayle inserts story here.) Lived several other places also, including Australia, Canada (briefly), Nebraska, and currently Iowa (howinhell did I get here?). If I had my druthers, I'd be living in Vermont, which I really feel is home.
All kinds of interests: music (MK, blues, classical, some New Age, Bruce Hornsby, Stevie Ray, Eric Johnson, etc), reading (historical fact and fiction, some fantasy), guitars, guitars, guitars (I would have a whole room full if I could afford them: currently parent to a Gretsch, a Mexican Fender Strat, two acoustics - a Washburn and a Hohner - and two junkers); writing when I get a chance; baking; gardening (lousy at it though; grow great weeds); biking when my legs work; walking (ditto); driving almost anywhere (seriously curtailed recently because of the oil barons); Australia, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, England; movies; practicing my guitar (I have an outstanding teacher with the approach of Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid); and I love great restaurants and coffee shops
Been a fan of MK and his music since around 1978 though never had money/too far away to see him in any incarnation until 2006 - first concert, MK/EH at Radio City Music Hall in New York (love New York too!)
Favourite DS song: too many; Once Upon a Time In The West, Single Handed Sailor, Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, etc
Favourite solo song: also too many; Sailing to Philadelphia, Don't Crash the Ambulance, 5:15, Marbletown, Hillfarmer's, Heart Full of Holes
Just returned from a wonderful visit to Norwich, England, where I met Nigel, Ingrid, Fieneke, Jane, and Mark from the Forum; I was enthralled by Norwich!! It is SO OLD....I felt very small there, and very recent. The party was outstanding, and Nigel was a great host. (and very charming!)
I have worked for the City of Omaha for 16 years. I must be doing something right because the cops regularly come up at night to visit. (They are my kids, since I have none of my own!)
I don't feel like I have ever gotten past 22 years old, although my body tells me otherwise!
Was staunchly anti-computer until I found the forum, now I'm on it all the time (although I still consider myself computer illiterate)
I have been happy to be part of this group for 2 years now. Thanks for all your hard work, those of you who have sweated blood putting this site together!
I may add or change something in here after my return from my second epic hospital visit. See you in a couple of weeks!

'Twas a great read jacki!!

Yes Jacki all the best for a speedy recovery. As I said in our chat the other day the operation has a very high rate of success these days.

Hehe, Gerhard got a shock when I told him I love their songs esp. Du Hast!!!!! Knut must know that song, one of the best Counter-Strike MTV songs! Highly recommended, Maarten! And best wishes for you. Jacki!

i kinda like Rammstein, dunno why.
also, why is gerhard not here yet??
we could use him...
i still miss your big harddrive on the hub Allen. . ::)
-
Gerhard's kinda inactive for chatting and trading, he only downloads and uploads by his decent bandwidth. I've got my big HD, but bandwidth is limited to 64kb/s of max uploads, so no chance to share all the stuff in the hub now. We individuals still use ADSL connection here in Beijing, of which group upload speed is limited. :'(

Hi All:
I am Joan, living in the small but beautiful state of Delaware, U.S.A. Nelly invited me to join this forum, so I hope it's okay! ::) Speaking of Nelly, I'd like to thank her for the avatar I'm using. She sent me some fabulous photos to print and I cropped this one to use as my avatar.
I fell head over heels madly in love with MK's music in 2006. I'll never forget it. I was sitting in bed with my husband and my dog drinking my coffee and watching TV. The Imus in the Morning show was on and he was promoting an upcoming appearance by MK and EH. I wasn't really paying attention to it because I was still half asleep. The next thing I heard was this amazing voice singing ........
..... "your bright shining sun would light up the way before me, you were the one made me feel I could fly"
I suddenly woke up and said to my husband, "who is that singing?". And he said "Mark Knopfler". And I said, "Who's Mark Knopfler?"
And he said, "You know, the guy from Dire Straits". And I said, "He's still around?"
And the rest is history.
Besides obsessing on MK, I enjoy my family (two grown sons and a daughter-in-law), my two dogs, drawing, painting, bird-watching, gardening, hiking, etc. etc.
This forum looks great! I already know many of you from the 'other' forum, and I'm looking forward to meeting some new friends and MK knutz.
-
Glad you're here, Joan!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Welcome Joan! I like to read your story! I used to be a die hard fan of Genesis. Every week I went to the local music shop to dig out Genesis stuff if they had new arrivals, but most of time I got bad luck, no new stuff or had been sold out. You know, buying original western music here is like buying bootlegs in the states, luck is the most important factor. The boss of the shop finally recommended me a cassette tape of Money for Nothing to ease my pain. I loved the cover art and paid it. After listening to the first track, I was overwhelmed by the guitar solo and unstopped listened to the last song. I, went to the shop the next morning to get all the DS/MK stuff they had. With the money saved, I bought an acoustic. That was back in 1991. The photo below was taken that year.

Hello Everyone,
Just joined up here after Pottel's advertising in Yeeshkul! so it's really great to be here and let me tell you a bit about myself. My name is Jeff Anderson and I live in Essex which is a county in the S.E of England and I am 34 years old.
I first got into DS around 1988/89 and my first recollection was seeing them on the TV on the Mandela show in '88 and then also part of the Alchemy concert was shown as a re-run by Channel 4 I think? and I taped it and then later when I was on holiday in Spain or Greece (can't exactly remember) I bought a tape of the "Money For Nothing" collection (which by the way is for me THE definitive collection) and played it to death wearing the thing out.
and then I bought the NHB tape and played that to death (your getting the idea here ;-) but I didn't see the band on the OES tour unfortunately as I couldn't get hold of a ticket for either the wembley shows or the earls court ones. And in between I bought all the DS albums of course and played them over and over and anyway I finally did get to see MK live at the Royal Albert Hall on the 24th May 1996 which I remember was a really wet day and it just rained and rained but of course I knew I would be inside the "birthday cake" and what a show it was, and I remember the special guests David Rawlings/Gillian Welch who joined MK in part.
My favourite tracks are basically found on the MFN collection but there are a couple of favourites besides which may not get much of a mention but are still great....

Welcome, Jeff and Peter! It's always great to hear everyone's "come to MK" stories!
Allen-I am a fan of early Genesis, with Peter Gabriel-NOT that other guy (what's his name?) Ignore Pottel. He is needing a good smack!
You have good taste in music, Allen! Did I tell you that Pottel needed a good smack?
Nigel-Quit hogging this thread, or I'll have to report you to the administrators! LOL!
HEYYY! How come BBB has more karmas than me???????

Hi everyone, if it would not offend, anyone, could we keep this particular thread just to the Who Are We topic? The chatting about our posts is fun and interesting, but it will cause a very long thread to scroll through just for information.
We could open a thread with comments about the Who Are We information. . . . .
-
Hi Irisrose! We are not on MKnews :P, I for one, love it when a thread takes many different directions. What does everybody else think?
Hi Peter, nice to see a fellow karate-ka on board!
-
I like the chatting too; it brings develops our friendships and shows our sense of humor. It was just a suggestion, not a censorhip or a criticism. If I were new on the forum, I would want to read the "who are we" information without scrolling through brief (but friendly and positive, yes) chats. I just think that a new thread can be started for those purposes. A suggestion does not make this 'another forum.' For what it's worth, that other forum has served many people well, and has provided much valuable content over the years. No one is perfect, and no one is all bad.
It is fun to see how people respond to different topics, and if we all said the same thing, we would be robots and the forum would be boring. In my opinion, though, the chatting in this thread takes away from the purpose of the thread. In any forum there have to be some guidelines. I hope that whenever a mod requests something that we will not be compared to others. We are unique, but we still must moderate.
Here are the guidelines for this issue:

Hello old friends and new. I'm Nancy King and am 61...yikes...but I feel like I'm 16, so we'll just reverse those numbers. I'm from Upstate NY, about two and a half hours north of NYC. I had been a casual fan of DS for years, but really lost my mind when my husband took me to see MK in Montreal during the Shangri La tour. It's been non-stop ever since, and we make it a point to fly and drive all over to see the band.
I am a retired English teacher/administrator, play lots of tennis, and have one daughter, one dog, and one fine husband. We go to lots of music shows, including Journey/Heart/Cheap
Trick just last night, but we have been spoiled rotten by the likes of Mark, Guy, Richard, Matt, Glen, etc. etc. Nothing comes close. Nothing.
Love the vibe of this site. It feels alive and fresh and I'll be reading all the posts every day. Cheers, all.

Hello Nancy - Great to see you made it over here! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun! ;D

I am Kris from Belgium. Originally from Bruges, but now living close to Antwerp for professional reasons :(.
Born in 1972, married for over 5 years and have a 4 year old daughter called Hyori.
I've been working as a programmer with an insurance company for over 10 years now and still liking it.
Became a fan in 1990. I knew the name DS, but that was about it. My university roommate bought the MFN CD and tried to make me listen to it. I wasn't interested because I thought I didn't know any songs. Then he played the CD and I knew half of the songs. Never looked back since and bought all the CD's.
Went to my first ever concert during the Golden Heart tour, since then STP, SL and ATRR tours. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the KTGC tour, because I was in the Far East on family business...
Other music I like: Queen (the original line-up with Freddie), B-52's, movie soundtracks. Recently, I developed a taste for Amy Winehouse (just the sound, not the sight ;D).
Other interest used to be mainly taekwondo. But since a second bad knee injury 2 years ago I had to quit all sports except swimming and biking. Hate both of them though, I only like taekwondo :-\... Internet, reading, listening to music are the hobbies for the moment. I would like to learn to play guitar though...
-
Welcome Kris!!! Sorry to hear about your knee :( Remind me not upset you though. Bet you could still kick my ass with only 1 good knee!! ;D
-
Living in: Prost?jov (near Brno), Czech Republic
Born: 1990
Fan since: hard to say, probably from 1993 when I started listenning to DS and hard-die fan since 2006
Job: student of conservatoire, playing piano
Music: 1) classical - Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, etc
2) MK of course, Eric Clapton, Suzanne Vega, Jimi Hendrix, The Corrs, Wohnout, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, R.E.M., Guy Fletcher (surprise ;D) etc
Hobbies: Playing piano and drums, (playing piano is more and more my hobbie), table tennis, bicycle, swimming, listenning to music (!), PC etc

Hello everyone
I'm Jon
I'm in my early forties, originally from Scotland, but living in London (although I've just bought a house by the sea).
I first heard Dire Straits when Sultans came out, but it wasn't until Making Movies that I really got into Dire Straits. My favourite albums now are the ones either side of MM. Love Over Gold, because it has a more expansive range of textures and stylings, which appeals to the prog rock fan in me. Communique because it's just a great collection of songs.
Up until recently, I hadn't really heard much of MK's solo material, so I'm just starting to explore that now.
In my spare time, I'm a musician (of sorts!). Some of you may know me as the bass player in the Dire Straits tribute band Dire Fakes. When I'm not playing with them, I have a few other projects on the go, including a tribute to Rush that I hope will be performing live later this year.
I'm hoping that Dire Fakes (and of course the other MK/DS tributes) will be allowed to post gig details here. This is possible on most of the band forums I'm on, but I don't want to upset anyone here. Very selfish I know, but it would be good to be able to publicise our shows to an interested audience. I hope some of you would be interested!

A very warm welcome to the latest members of the forum, draad and Jon. I hope you will enjoy being here! ;D

OK, apologies for not getting round to posting in this thread until now.
I'm Matt
Born 1977
I can first remember becoming aware of DS when Money for Nothing came out. It was a great song, but the video was of course a big deal back then too, I just loved it. A friend of my dad's gave me his cassette of Brothers in Arms when he was drunk at a party at my dad's house, but I only used to listen to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life, then rewind the tape (I was just a kid).
My brother gave me the compilation album Money for Nothing in 1989, but again, I really only listened to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life.
By 1991 I was a little older (13 I guess by the time OES came out). I'd heard that the new Dire Straits video was based on Thunderbirds, so being a big Thunderbirds fan, I stayed up late to watch "The Making of Calling Elvis" on Channel 4 here in the UK. (In fact I still have it on video somewhere).
I loved the video and the song and went back to listen to Brothers in Arms and Money for Nothing. Turns out I loved ALL the songs. I used to go over to my friend's house because his dad had bought the OES album, and just get him to play it constantly.
I got my first CD player for Christmas in 1992, and gradually started buying up the DS back catalogue. By then I was hooked. Since then I've been fairly obsessive, seeing MK live for the first time in Aberdeen on the Golden Heart Tour in 96 and quite a few times since.
Around 93 I decided that I wanted to try to play guitar like MK, and the guitar has since become my other obsession in life, I've got loads of them now, too many, and I've played in a few bands over the years.
I live in Aberdeen with my wife and 1 year old son, but I'm moving to Edinburgh next month.
Other than MK my favourite other artist is Steve Earle. I used to be a big fan of Paul Simon/Simon and Garfunkel, but I find myself drifting away. A lot of my other favourite artists are country people like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris although I'm also very into Bob Dylan. Leonard Cohen too.
-
Leonard Cohen! Love him!

Great to see you on here Jon, you need to try and get Alan on here now as well. ;)
Also Draad, good to see you too. I have big connections with Sussex, i spend a lot of my time in Hastings, where my grandparents used to live. It's a great part of the country.

Wow, we're cookin now. Welcome draad and Jon, btw Jon I was at Nigel's party and you guys really made it rock...excellent choice of bands, we really loved you. Welcome to the several other newbies also, and yes, this forum is shaping up to be one of my favourite sites just in these last few days, as we seem to get joiners in groups now. MK is certainly a catalyst for some wonderful conversations and questions! And I chose the Claudia Schiffer avatar because I couldn't get it to take any of my own personal pics, but it would be nice to say I resembled her a little bit!! ;)
-
....and I'm the spittin' image of Shakira (you should see me move my hips-or is it break my hips? Botox my lips? Sink a thousand ships? Wish I could take some trips?)!
Welcome, Marc!

Hope you enjoy yourselves! Everyone is a friend here.

:) I'm a bit the same. I tend to come and go a bit. But a hearty welcome to all recent new members. ;) Great lot of people for sure!!!
-
Well. Now I have FOUR stars in my signature (!!) :lol I think I should introduce myself, too? So if anybody is interested:
Born 1971, so I am not 40 yet, books are my life, librarian, studied in Hamburg, working in a bookstore now, I love it. Live in a small town in Northern
Germany, near the dutch border, so I could be a "Border Reiver" anytime and visit Geroen, Fienecke and all the others.
My sister had Brothers in Arms from her friend, back in 1985, and he forgot it in our living room, so I found it there and listened to the intro from MfN for about 80 times - in the first week! Then she told me she had some cassettes from them, and I was able to listen to aLCHEMY, (but TOL was cut in the middle of the intro, so was PI - which never was a problem. When I had my first CD player in 1990, the second CD I bought was Alchemy (( the first one was BIA)) and when I was able to listen to TOL COMPLETE for the first time, I was in heaven!)
It was about then that I was going on everybody's nerves because of MK and Dire Straits and stuff, and all my friends were impatient with me within minutes!
My first live experience was 1991 in Bremen - and was totally stunned for weeks! I drove to Munich one week later without having a ticket and trying
to buy one outside the venue, found one, missed the first 10 minutes of Calling Elvis and saw Dire Straits the second time then! And so on and so on.
When I had my first internet, the first search word was "Knopfler" (I swear it!) And it was 2000 and I read that there will be a new album out "STP", which is my all time favourite. Will always be and ever was. Dire Straits included. So that was another big moment.
Last year, I joined this forum, and was "at home" within days - much more than I ever was at "the other side" - and feel so here since then. :D
This year, I will be at a concert at the RAH for the first time and looking forward to it very much!
Next year, I will write a book about MK and call it "Memory Lane" - A biography of Mark Knopfler - or maybe not. :disbelief :disbelief
Love Expresso is just my name because I was not able to get an account for "Creole Blue" which I would have loved much more! ;D
All the best,
LE
-
OK, my turn :)
I guess most of you know me, but here I am again:
Name: Morten
Age: soon 39
Wife and three kids (8, 5 and 5)
I am a musician and a lawyer
I've been living in Moss, 60 km south of Oslo, for 4 1/2 years now. I concider Oslo my hometown.
I've been a member of and a poster on MK News Forum since the very beguinning, was it in 1998? And since most of those members changed forum, I did too, and I really enjoy beeing here!
I like and listen to all kinds of music and artists, but MK is like a football team, you just stay. I guess it's about passion and fanatism. I have a similar relationship with Bruce Springsteen.
As a guitarist I had the pleasure of being invited to be a part of a Bob Dylan Slow Train 30th aniversary concert in Oslo last year because of my relationship with MK's music. I bought a volume pedal and played MK guitar publicly for the first time in my life, and it was extremely fun!!! (I have of course played MK guitar at home when practising since MK made me change from keyboards to guitar in mid '80ies, but never in a band/concert/studio situation. I've done it several times since last year though.)
I've listened to MK since 1985. I fell in love with his music when it was played at a party. The day after, I bought the BIA casette on a petrol station, and then I had to buy the rest of his records and the book by Michael Oldfield, and I was sold.
First consert with MK: Oslo 1992. It's been around 10 shows since that, I think. Favourite MK/DS concert: Oslo 1996, first runner up: Oslo 2008
Fav DS record: Making Movies (the only rock and roll record made by MK, high quality, timeless, it rocks!) But I have a very spesial relationship with Love Over Gold.
Fav MK solo record: Shangri-la? Yes, I think so. It's wall to wall with guitar in a tasty way, I think.
Love you all!
Morten ;)

I read today a message of a new member and thought about this thread! So after searching, I found it back again at page 11! ;D
As you see the last post is made at April 21-2010. :disbelief
The last 2 1/2 years we have many new visitors and posters. I thought they might like to introduce them as well, that is why I

Thanks, Fieneke, for bringing this back to more recent times!! I would not have otherwise found it and learned so much about fellow posters!
I am Lis, from California. In 1983, when I was 19, I moved myself to Munich, Germany, where I spent 4 amazing years making friends, learning the language, going to school, growing up, and living it up (fun times!!).
I first fell in love with Dire Straits in

Very nice to have this post re-emerged.
I'm Brazilian, 39 years old. I've lived in a bunch of cities before coming to Brasilia, our national capital, 16 years ago. I'm maried and my wife is expecting Gabriela, our first baby, who is bound to be here at the end of May, first days of June.
I'm a journalist, working in the public sector. I'm the editor of "Voz do Brasil" (Brasil's voice), a radio program with news from Executive, Judiciary and Legislative (my part) branches of Brazil's government. This program exists for more than 75 years, it's one hour long and its broadcast is mandatory for all radio stations all over the country.
I had already listened to Sultans of Swing and, oddly enough, The long Road, without knowing who was the master mind behind them. Dire Straits came properly to my attention with the Brothers in Arms video, back in 1985, and I recall my older brother mocking at MK's voice everytime the video appeared in a tv show called "Clip clip"... I felt definetively in love with DS when MfN was released, in december, 1988. I even remember that the compilation was sort of a Christmas fever here in Brazil, with TV ads and all. So, my first album was MfN, and my first CD was On Every Street.
I've attended 3 MK shows, two in S
