According to the first clue, Dire Straits had their first tour in 1979 and played more than 50 shows in less than 40 days. Hmm....
-
You can see in the comments there's already several guys who's right on the money. I was 169KM off on my first try... :lol
Looks like there'll be a lot of winners and in the end they would be forced to do a random selection, with 24 days left.
-
Anyone who knows and can tell? It will be random anyway since many will be right.
I am 177km off unfortunately

There's so many days left it will be impossible for the right answer NOT to leak somewhere. Don't know why they've decided to do this competition for so long and with FIVE clues. I mean, obviously it's a road in the US, more or less obvious it's in some deserted area. And with that information, there's not so many choices.
I think what they should do is to count the very first precise answer as the winner and decide the rest randomly.
-
There is somebody who already had 0 km away. My first guess was 821km away. I am searching with streetview but i can't find the correct road yet. All the roads looks the same...

816 km !

It was tough, but I got it. But it doesn't matter anyway, because there's an army of people with correct answers and there's almost a month left.
-
The only clue is that it was a location on the 1979 tour so it could be a road almost anywhere across 2 continents. You can exclude the UK due to the road markings. I can't believe some of you are so close.
-
Not that many choices? You're joking right? :)

I'm obviously missing something. I tried and was able to drag the pin to anywhere in the world. How are there not many choices?
-
Well, I must have misread the instructions, because I thought the first clue was the first place (town) they played on the 1979 tour and then we would get another clue, and so on, as in a treasure hunt, until we closed in on the actual place. I was 3,300 km out! :smack

When I saw the picture I thought "this looks like a road in the US". Then, I googled some major highways in the US and I've found the scenery which reminds me the scenery of the cover. So then what I did was I did a little research and found a place which looks pretty close to cover.
So I've picked that out and the answer was "169KM". 169KM is not an infinity, in fact there's only maybe a dozen of capable roads in this area.
Now, this is where this competition gets pretty annoying. Because knowing you're 169KM off you can with a little bit of research find the exact place. It would be much, much better if the website would just tell you something like "you're close" or "you're too far" or something, not the exact number. With the system like that, you can guarantee to have thousands of close answers.

From the T&C's.
The competition prizes are as follows: One winner will receive 2x
tickets to Mark Knopfler’s concert in Los Angeles, USA on 22nd September
2019, or another concert date of equal value. The prize includes economy
flights to and from anywhere in the world and 2 nights hotel accommodation
in Los Angeles (or another concert location of equal value). The prize does
not include ground transport or other expenses in any location.

I like the prize and that's why I've spent a little bit extra time to find the exact spot from which the photo was taken.

Yea.. the smartest thing is to set a radius with the distance and try to get closer... funny thing is... My GF was sitting having a look around, and by just luck we might have found it, there is also connection with a song from this location.. i will try again on next clue, will look around and see if anything is an equal match to the cover...

Without Google Maps and exact distance readings it would be one heck of a competition :lol

There is no radius function on Google Maps. Do you have a tool or site for that? I could'nt find it yet. I have also found a couple of roads who are very close to the cover, but the mountains don't fit :-\
-
I use this site:
https://www.calcmaps.com/map-radius/
Just try to match that picture with Google Maps, click to put down the pin and draw the radius with the other one :)
Haha yes those mountains are difficult to match to the cover. Is there a function where you can move the mountains until you are satisfied? :)

That's a very good tool, I wish I'd had something like that!
By the way, if one of you will find the place, please don't post it there, let people get through their own private investigation.

Yea that sounds good... Well, most of it looks like the cover picture.. except the mountains don't match! I have 2 possible places in the radius, only the mountains that are not right... but this could be so wrong as well, I don't know.. I just found a clear connection with one song so I can't let go of this place, will probably try this with the next clue....

The distance given... Is it by roads, or 1 straight line?
-
How do you log in again after the first guess?
-
12 kms
The shit is. I did not exactly save this point in my mind.
So have to wait 2 days and maybe get farther.
Did not think I would have been so close.
-
The distance seems not in a straight line... I drawed 2 circles with km's and location i got from a fellow seeker. We choose the intersection point, what was still 329 km away... :think ???

Hmm so it could be distance by road? Makes it even more difficult..dont know how people already managed to get right spot. What am I missing? The clue itself is easy but not enough...i will try my distance by road instead of radius and see what happens.

Will test soon. Have 4 locations with the distances.

Honestly, I got it partly by luck. I also drew circles according to my wife's attempt and mine and actually it was pretty darn effective. Later, after a lot of "driving" on Street View eventually, after five or six fruitless attempts and searching for unsearchable, I've found it. And I was actually too ambitious and now miss this pure feeling of adventure, so keep it fresh and don't cheat! This is a really cool little game.

Only 3Km away! But for some reason I can't get it right!
-
I have one road of interest after my last attempt. 2 possible spots on this road after drawing my radius. The mountains however do not match and I have travelled the whole road nearly :o
Will see what the next clue says but I feel I wont find it....

Tried from my GF's mail now, 18km away!!! :o
-
So I tried my exact spot. Even all the bushes are exactly the same, other clues are aligned exactly, too, no doubt — that's the exact point. And what's the results?
2KM off!
Now I'm pissed off. Either put the exact point on the map or do nothing at all. So it seems they have their own point where they think it was taken.
And you know what? I give up. There already people with "0 km" answers and I've found the exact point and got 2 km. I don't like it. Thanks.

Lol, on such a long straight road i bet you can find the same view and bushes in 2km as well.

I tried, but the slope ahead changes drastically and doesn't look like cover anymore.
It's not the perfectly straight road, it has a curve to it, which is another clue.
So let's guess where somebody guessed there the cover was taken :lol

What i don't get... The clue's as in KM's away are not correct at all :hmm
I'm 4KM off now... Getting closer ;D

This also happened to me. It said I was 3km away, even when the picture in Google Maps is exactly the same as the cover. Maybe it's a bug?

I can hardly reckognise the album cover in google maps... even when im on the right spot.

I can hardly reckognise the album cover in google maps... even when im on the right spot.
The trouble is there's no right spot on Google Maps, so you have to do an additional research. And after that you realise you're 2 kilometres off lol. So it's a complete free-for-all — find the spot and then just guess.
-
Also, I had a strange glitch today: I wasn't able to do another guess after the first attempt, but then I logged in expecting to see a timer and instead I was offered a second chance. This was strange, so I went ahead and picked another spot, got 2KM and walked away. Now I log in again and see my old results with old timer, so that was the fluke the first time? I definitely couldn't misspell something because of auto-completion, so it was a glitch. And will it count as different attempts? I don't know, I already lost all my faith in this game.

I don't know what for additional research can help me further yet :) Tried several things, but no results for a 'better view'. Just move slowly in one direction until you hit the 0 km spot......

As I said before I've encountered a glitch when I was able to do an extra try. I hope it doesn't count as the rules violation, because seems like anything goes.
Also, since you can use different names, different emails and possibly different IPs, you theoretically can have an infinite amount of attempts in finding the 0km spot.
I wonder how it all could be filtered. They should have use a some kind of authentication. At least have a e-mail confirmation or something.
-
Hmm.. I was 3km away.. so i made the radius of 3km and and selected one end of the road... now says 4km away? Is there some stupid road that's barely visible even with zoom or what is this shit?
The only road looking anything like the cover picture is this road... But heading 3km in 1 of 2 possible directions gives me only 4km away instead of 6km?
And now 5km wrong from the other side... haha, i will give up this shit soon :( makes no sense no more, the only "road" is totally wrong and still the center of my current radius is the closest, but going to the sides just increase the distance, there are no working options up and down on the map.....
-
Haha i found it. Was actually looking at that road earlier but never thought of it until now. Fingers crossed then to be one of X tens of thousands of users who win :)
-

The main question is how they will decide the winner. Is this going to be how close you was physically putting the mark or simply how many kilometres you were off? If the second, I recon hundreds of winners by the end of this competition. Pity they don't have a satellite map there.

Same here.... 3km and I move a bit and I am 3km again... or 7km... what the ****?
I wonder where is the road you talk about !
It seems that the map doesn't show all :(
-
Now 578... a bit better... I mean it's not like I have a chance in winning this I can't even navigate my own city if I'm being honest
-
143 KM away. Hmm.... north or south ;) 143 is quite a distance in Denmark, in the US its like a kiss in the wind...
EDIT: 3 km.
-
Yesterday's attempt didn't saved unfortunately (guess the same bug Quizzy mentioned). So I tried again and now hit the 0km spot :)
-
I became obsessed finding it, and finally did ;)
But I must say some of the roads I passed was more similar to the cover than this so I think you are right about that this is where "they think" it was shot.
-
I'm down to 18 km away. Going around all over, seems almost more difficult the closer you get!

Take some printscreens and mark your attempts if you are not doing that already... helped me a lot and you get a clear picture on where you should head next :)

Where I'm at there aren't many other roads in the radius. I need to take a break and get back to it tomorrow.

First attempt - 504km off
-
Clues are all in the javascript code... ;D but they didn't help me
var clues = {1: { title: "America", clue: "Dire Straits played their first tour here in 1979, playing 51 sold out concerts over a 38 day period."},
2: { title: "West Coast", clue: "The ‘City of Angels’ is on this side of the US."},
3: { title: "California", clue: "On the 15th September 1985, Dire Straits played in this state on the ‘Brothers in Arms’ tour."},
4: { title: "Nevada", clue: "On 25th October 2013, Mark played in this state on the ‘Privateering’ tour."},
5: { title: "Fallon, NV", clue: "Nicknamed ‘The Oasis of Nevada’, this town is the birthplace of Kansas City Chiefs player Joshua Mauga."}};
I was 3km away, so my mum tried and is 0km away!
I hope she wins ! ( and take me with her)
-
Ah, now 15 km off! We're getting there!
-
Just curious, how many attempts do you get? I've been checking and last time I could adjust the location was more than 2 days ago... :think
-
I'm just about 3 km... I tried various locations and I'm always 3 km. Strange...
-
I'm just about 3 km... I tried various locations and I'm always 3 km. Strange...
What if you zoom out a bit, rather than zoom in close and try and get the exact couple of plants by the roadside? Is it actually near Fallon, NV? So busy with work, I just dont have the time to explore.
-
Finally I got it. 3 km was quite close so it was a matter than triangulate as some nice amiters pointed to me in private, lol. I was so close that you can't see the obvious until someone point at it and you say: damm, of course!
Thanks!

I tried with various mails and with one of them I was about 66 km and I got the message that I would participate so I guess it doesn't matter really if you get a 0 km position but that you get close.
By the way when I got help I was 3 km away and already thinking about looking the road where it was just a matter of try and try lol
-
So... you say it was obvious once you found the 0km spot?
I still don't get it why that exact point has any kind of sense in it. Yes, there is a place a bit further up that says something, but if I'd placed the needle there it would have been too far away from the radius that finally got me in the right spot.
So I don't still understand if there is a specific reason or clue behind the exact position on the map... or maybe we are at different 0km's ? :hmm
-
It was obvious since I tried three times and all of them I was 3 km away, not because the place is obvious, which is not at all.
We all guessed it was a road in Nevada but no clue about being that one exactly...
-

That's not what rules says. Rules says that you can participate multiple times but only your closest result will participate. Not any mention about being at the 0 km spot to participate.
It's a game after all and the fun is in playing ;)

Ofcourse you can participate, but you cant win when you are 50km away when 1000 people have 0km. That sounds ridiculous.

Nice!
I made another attempt and said Greenland. First prize here I come! :)
-
No it has to be all that has 0 km.
It says: "The prize winner will be based on closest coordinates on the competition map to where the album artwork image was photographed."
As closest coordinates is 0 km it has to be all that gets it right. If the winning person was 120 km off, then it is not closest coordinates. :lol

All with 0km should be the ones with a chance...
If everyone can win regardless of distance from the right spot, I'm out of this contest.. Havn't we had enough already with the bonus songs mess, FA confusing, late deliveries etc etc etc .
-
Has anybody actually, genuinely found the exact spot, 0 km? Friends, family, and I myself have managed to get as close as 3 and 4 km, but none less than that. Has anybody got the exact coordinates of ground zero? (After midnight, GMT.) Why is it in km, anyway? The USA measure in miles, like the UK!
-
Got 0 km yes. But what they think what the correct spot is actually 2km away of the real photo spot.
I can reveal after the deadline (in about 20 minutes), ofcourse ;)

Please do! I lost my stepfatherlast night, and have spent all this evening trying to find 0 km, just to keep my mind off things..

My condoleances. Im sorry to hear.
The deadline has been reached now according to their terms.
Its not a place on highway 50, there you got 3km distance. There is a video on YouTube video who shows it best (not related to this contest, so coincidentally)

Thank you. Yes, he certainly was a ''Mighty Man.' I wish I could have known him in his younger years. I'll have a look on Youtube for more info!

First you need to know the road name and number, you can find on streetview/maps. Then do a google search for it and everything falls into place ;)

I'm pretty sure, that only the people with 0 km will have a chance to win.
I do a lot of competitions every month.
In fact I'm quite a competition fanatic. :)
Some time ago I participated in a similar competition, where they showed you pictures of streets in France, which are located in tourist areas.
You had a map and you had to mark where the street could be located.
You got points based on how close you got to the actual street.
The main prize was a car and you had to reach a certain number of points to be able to have a chance to win the car.
Everyone who had less than a certain number of points only had a chance to win a small prize.
Everything was explained in the terms and conditions of the competition.
Since the goal of this competition is to find the place where the album cover was taken and nothing else regarding points/km is mentioned the only thing that counts is the distance.
So 0 km is better than 3 km or 50 km.
The reason why they mention that you participate with 70 km is that they don't know how many people will reach 0 km.
If there a 50 people who reach 0 km and 100 who reach 3 km they will draw the prizes among the ones with the better results.
But if there's 1 person who reached 0 km and 50 people with 3 km you would a chance to win with 3 km.
This is a quite common method to narrow down the number of participants for a competition, because it's unlikely that everyone will reach 0 km. Of course everyone has the same chance in the beginning, but the prizes will be drawn among the best participants.
-
I just wonder how close I really am.. someone wrote that there was a point with the exact location, i still have not figured it out. And based on my radius circles efforts in order to get closer i found the 0km "spot". Still don't see the point of it other than the name of the road MAYBE... :)

Contest is closed
So, here it is:
It's the 121 Dixie Valley Road, close to Lincoln Highway (were you get the 3 km distance)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevada_State_Route_121#/media/File:2015-04-02_15_18_31_View_north_from_the_south_end_of_Nevada_State_Route_121_(Dixie_Valley_Road)_in_Churchill_County,_Nevada.JPG
Look at this video, at 1.05 ;)
https://youtu.be/J9RRnifEBvs
The tricky part is that streetview doesn't work on this road, but only on the main road (highway 50, lincoln highway). You can set streetview on the intersection and you get the view 'you were looking for' below ;)
The video above starts at this intersection and drives into this road.
The funny part is that you can choose the exact spot (video at 1.05 - 1.07) according to this video, but that the answer says 'still 2km away' (so they havent got the right coordinates). So when you put your spot a little further up on the 121 road, you will hit the 0km spot, but it isn't the actual photo spot :-\
-
Why post the answer.... Now chances are even lower for each and one of us...nicely done....really...... :clap :disbelief
Or has the contest ended? If so I Accept it

Yes, it is closed last midnight GMT time, so 12 hours ago. The winner will get a mail today.

Today, and you need to react to the mail within 5 hours, or an other winner will be chosen (according to the terms), that's pretty fast.
-
I wonder what time zone ?
Greenwich Mean Time
-
Sorry I removed my question because I found the answer ;D
It seems that they are very inspired by random selection... (FA... )
https://united-agency-server.co.uk/markknopfler/roadwherever/assets/docs/MK_terms.pdf
We have to get lucky now and then...
-
Guess the persons who had energy time and effort to make 100+ emails are the most likely ones... I am already sure I won't win a shit.

Well that is really annoying. I put a dot on the 121 at what would have been about the right spot, and it said I was 4 kn out. My girlfriend put a mark up there, too.

Different email adresses are no use, if they belong to the same person.
You need a huge family or friends who are willing to participate with their name.
If the same person participates with a second email adress the person is disqualified.
In many cases companies ask for an ID before they hand out a prize (if it's a valuable prize).
-
Has the winner been announced ?
-
Has the winner been announced ?
Contacted privately I think...
I expect no prize although I am at 0km, i got row 1 through FA and I can't be that lucky again.... :lol
-
It can't just end like that, it would be too stupid. You can make competitions like that every day. I can do it too:
Guess Mark's answer to the question "How you started playing the guitar" and the prize is a vintage family radio.
I hate any competitions with easy rules, because there's virtually no chances to win. I like real competition :wave
-
Obviously they can't announce the winner by name, because he or she can get in trouble, but they should try to do at least something.
-

LOL
Condition of radio: as is

Great video find! If you go to about 1.45-1.46 you can see the marker posts either side of the road and that 'H' shaped thing over to the right. I wonder how many of us will actually visit that place now. I love doing things like that.
-
Anyone has receive an email yet? :think
Nope I checked mails several times yesterday evening, I have no hope now of winning.
-
How weird, they don't announce anything... No one here or on Facebook claimed to win anything...
The only thing they say is that the competition is closed...https://united-agency-server.co.uk/markknopfler/roadwherever/

Maybe a risk putting winning names out in public, who knows if some are really desperate to get a signed boxset, i don't know... Guess it's for security and privacy reasons...

They could give the answer and say winners are John M..., Glen, W..., Richard B... etc...
Congratulations something... blabla

I'd say John McCarthy, Glen Worcester and Richard Bennetter would beg to differ.
-
Well it just can't end like this...

Well it just can't end like this...
I just tried once and found it boring so I can't remember the terms. Did it not say winners would be contacted by e-mail or something? No need to name them publicly then.

They wouldn't even give the "right" answer for people, so it can't end just like that. What it should end like is this:
The location is here, the photo was taken by X in 201X year, and the closest winner was X from X country. Yippie!
-
The photographer is credited in the booklet. At least we know something lol

Here's the Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/MarkKnopfler/posts/10156386243469934
So apparently in order to win you had to guess the 0 km position (Dixie Valley Road) and they decided the winner randomly.
This is a very good luck, congratulations. That's what I'd call "got lucky" ;D
