Mark will be a guest on on the 19th of November on the Jools Holland programme, BBC Radio 2 at 21.00 hrs.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00016lt
According to Guy, MK already recorded this programme and played some songs with the Jools Holland band.
-
Nice!
-
Thanks for sharing. Shouldn't the topic title be changed to 19th of November instead of 21st of April?
-
This evening with Jools hope in something special, I dream for
Just a boy away from home for DTRW
Water of Love for DS
Wild Theme for forthcoming musical
:P
-
You don't dream cheap, do you?

I'll go fairly cheap and say he'll play GOYS followed by MM.

With Jools Holland, Rear View Mirror should be a must with Jools on piano and maybe some of his band members? Dreaming...

-
And Ry Cooder too, oh my :)
Great song this one!!
-
If it's only 30 minutes, probably only time for 2 songs and one of them is probably GOYS. :D
-
The old gospel music they are playing reminds me of Dem Bones.

-
I bet on Tunnel Of Love to be played.
-
I bet on Tunnel Of Love to be played.
I’ll eat my MacBook if he does that

25min no mark :thumbsdown

As always he's too busy signing stuff for "Mak! Mak!" people.
-
Perhaps he might play Matchstick Man?
-
Perhaps he might play Matchstick Man?
That would be nice. I'd love to hear OSAAT or Heavy Up. Might fit as well. But it'll probably be GOYS and then Local Hero haha.
-
MK is on
-
Dancefloor....
-
They are now playing BOTD from the record
-
Jools and his musical exploits (TV shows, Radio Shows and Live Shows) are iconic...Im enjoying the tracks being dug up here....
-
Then, that's what I would call "play". Can't get better than that though :lol
-
Playback! >:(
-
Nice, MK listens to Spotify too
-
Spongebob squarepants indeed
-
Spongebob squarepants indeed
I laughed hahaha
-
He’s got his 64’ white fender strat with him, for slide playing
-
Just a boy incoming?
-
Spongebob squarepants indeed
I laughed hahaha
What was that about?
LE
-
Oh dear..... this doesn’t so very great. I don’t know the song but someone is terribly out of tune. Probably the banjo

He was talking about a package being delivered I believe

Oh cool! Another cover :)
Waterbound by Dirk Powell
-
MK playing now
Waterbound
I went out late one night
The moon and the stars were shining bright
A storm come up and the trees come down
I tell your boys I was water bound
Waterbound on a stranger's shore
The river rising to my door
It carried my home to the field below
I'm waterbound nowhere to go
I carve my name on an old barn wall
And no one would know I was there at all
The stable's dry on a winter night
You turn your head you can see the light
A black cat crawling on an old box car
A rusty door and fallen star
Ain't got a dime in my nation sack
I'm waterbound and I can't get back
It's I'm goin' and I won't be back
You don't believe me count my tracks
The river's long and the river's wide
I'll meet you boys on the other side
So say my name and don't forget
The water still ain't got me yet
Ain't nothing but I'm bound to roam
I'm waterbound and I can't get home
-
Who plays banjo ?
-
Oh cool! Another cover :)

It’s better now!!

Spongebob squarepants indeed

LE
He was talking about a package being delivered I believe
Sounded like they discussed Wikipedia. And MK read about the Gettysburg Address from the US Civil War.
And someone had edited that it was given my Spongebob Squarepants. ;D
-
Love it. Great cover.
-
Quite like the guitar. “That was deliberately rough ladies and gentlemen.” Brilliant. Mark is in a great mood.
-
Mystery Train now, playback, didn’t catch the artist
-
That cover of Waterbound topped about every jazz song on DTRW.
There, I said it! ;D ;D ;D
-
Mystery Train now, playback, didn’t catch the artist
Junior Parker
-
Just a boy - playback being played now
-
Let me say for the record — Jools Holland is absolutely crazy.
-
Jools is tops!!!
-
Really enjoyed it, Mark in a good mood with plenty of subtle humor. Just wish the segment had been a bit longer.
-
Today I predict for Just a boy, but not in album version :hmm

Agree, whole programme would have been great. MK in a great mood...
-
Why the reluctance to play his own new songs live? Pretty disappointed in tonight; was looking forward to hearing a couple of new songs performed live at least. Instead we got a cover which I was totally not interested in which sounded out of tune at the start. :(
-
I keep wondering how it's gonna work when they play it in Manchester, for example...
-
Lot of MK related folks in this video of Waterbound. :)

I expected more of this I have to say. Would have been nice that he played BOTD live e.g.

I know what you mean and the show was not what we were expecting really, I'm thinking that the constraints of the show itself and a lack of rehearsal time probably limited what they could do, it was subtly alluded to that the cover was the first time they had all played it. And to finish on a positive note it was nice to hear a relaxed MK in a way that we don't often get to hear, perhaps we should be grateful for anything he does now as it is obviously certainly the twilight of his live performing career if not his recording.

His humour really shines in this one. Love that.

Dissapointed is the word. I thought at least 'Just a boy' would have been played live especially as he had the Strat n slide with him....
-

Indeed it did, he was in a fine mood...
-
It struck me that his next album could very well be an album of covers like the likes we heard tonight.
Bob did it with Good As I've Been To You and World Gone Wrong. It could be very well that a lot of thinking about the next few years has been taken place from his side..

That could be actually plausible. I mean: he hasn't done a lot of covers in his solo career apart from the NHB, has he? Now this is the second one in two months time.
-
I hope not. MK is too good a songwriter to waste time on covers. I will take any new Knopfler music any time. Leave covers for Clapton and such.

Yes agreed, no covers for MK! Of course an MK Christmas Carol album could appear next year??!! After all MK has sung 'Rudolph the red nosed reindeer'
-
He talked about a musician who plays banjo , fiddle... and played with Eric Clapton but did he say his name ?
-
He is honest in mentioning the age thing and prepares the world in a way for a future with a changing Mark Knopfler. I like that attitude although it comes somewhat surprising nevertheless. We talk about the age thing at every live show thread discussion and it was often said, he can play for 10 years at least, others did it as well. But since 2015 some time has passed inrepeatable.

Agreed. I don't think MK would ever release an album of covers. I think these 2 covers are just a side thing he is doing alongside the record release. He enjoys his own creativity too much - a joy he has often talked about.
-

Dirk Powell.
You're only one or two pages away on the "back button" to get that info... ;)

It certainly is surprising when you are supposed to be promoting a world tour! I wonder what PCM think...

It's not that I want one. But then, it would be from him nevertheless. Whatever he will bring up the rest of his life, I will follow him down the road wherever anyway.

Neck & Neck was 10 songs and only one of them was written by our man. Superb album though.

Loved Mark on Jools last night and he did a wonderful job with "Waterbound". I have heard Dirk Powell play this song at one of the Transatlantic Sessions I've been to and Mark's version was a great cover. :)
-
I was a bit too harsh. It’s stuck in my head. Great song

Their tour is in February and we will be going to The Sage in Gateshead. They are well worth seeing. :)
I agree, it would be great if MK was there, especially as he has connections with most of the artists playing!
-
Oh thanks for the info, I'll check out the dates.... :wave
-
This song is just a slower version of Trapper Man :o :o
Am i the only one who notice this? :think
-
If anyone can MP3 this then a DM would be great. WOW! what a performance. I can't stop listening to it - played it about ten times today so far. An absolute delight - a woozy, late night, dream of a performance - magnificent stuff.
-
Had another listen this morning and it is a great performance, however my disappointment remains the same. He's supposed to promoting an album and tour and yet performs this and tells magazines he's decrepit and worries about playing anything fast...???
-
I confess that I don't I have listen Waterbound never, and I spend almost all last night with it in my ears, what a great performance by the Man, his drawling voice is magic .. :clap

I understand what you mean, I try to enjoy what he play, I don't think anything else.
Life is what is not what we would like.

This secret project that has Guy mentioned before. That wasn't the new album nor the musical. Could it be a cover album in the making? :think

It could be. That would explain "many people you know" or something like that Guy've said. I actually want this kind of an album so bad.
While Mark was making his new album, Van Morrison released 4 albums (5th on its way) with covers mixed up with his own songs. Nobody died.
But maybe it's not a cover album, but rather something like Van Morrison's or Paul Simon's albums like reworking the catalogue with guests.
-
I understood that the musical.

sorry if it is a silly question, but was it the "later with Jools Holland" show, or is another one ?
I mean, does Jools Holland have several shows, either on radio or on TV ?
thanks

I guess you all heard the Van Morrison story Mark was telling? About him being so keen on first takes.. "I was in the same room when Van played and an engineer missed to press the button".. Silence ..
"That was not a good moment". I just love how he told it. Really good have him when he is "lightened up".

Jools has both his tv show (later...) and also presents a radio show on bbc radio 2. It was the latter MK was on yesterday, as opposed to a night in London which was a special edition of the later with jools tv show.

So the radio show is not called "later with Jools Holland" then ?
How is it called ? just the Jools Holland radio show ?

Simply, Jools has a Radio 2 show every Monday evening and also 'Later with Jools Holland' which is on BBC2 (Series 53 finished on the 6th November)
