So with just over a week now gone by since the official release of DTRW, I have to say personally I just cannot put this album down! My MK Strat has come out of its case for some serious playing!!
Remarkably there are still no 'skippers' for me.
I think it just has to be the class musicianship alongside the 'wordsmith' lyrics that make this album soooo very good....
OSAAT - Is still my Goosebump, make the hair on the back of my neck stand up song!
How's everyone else faring?
-
I'm faring quite well, thank you! :) I'm enjoying the album without skipping anything, although the solo on Just a Boy still grates on me in a similar way that it did on Gator Blood! I'm still finding Slow Learner incredibly - slow, but I know that will get better over time. Apart from those two gripes I think it's a great album and MK's voice is so good that I could listen to him forever! :P
My favourite song now is "When You Leave" - I think it's possibly the best song on the album, surprising really, because there isn't a guitar solo at all! Of course "Drovers' Road" is wonderful too! :)
-
Yes I agree. DTRW is another Great Album with a lot of tracks very amazing. OSAAT is also for me a Number One in all MK' s discography.
All the rest, chart, reviews, sure that I read all, good or not, but is not really important for me.
This is time, after so much waiting, to enjoy with this new album of my favourite, the Best Musician of all time, Mr Mark Knopfler :clap
-
I really like this album. Great music and lyrics and excellent sound quality.
-
I love all 19 new songs, and the two cover songs he did days ago for BBC radio are great, as well. I made my right choice to have bought three concert tickets in 2019 to see him live !!!

Thanks, we will meet, fingers crossed. Need to buy a litho and a tour programme, as well. And a T-shirt, and some pins, and ...

Of course "Drovers' Road" is wonderful too! :)
Drovers Road is just amazing, I picture the Scottish Highlands and also the fabulous painting of the Drovers I found when the opening few notes are sounding... Yes, I'm with you now on JAB...

Agree... This is a good album, I find it way better than Tracker..
Is it only me who thinks of the tour EVERY DAY?! I can't wait anymore, I need 2019 :lol

+1000 :)
OSAAT is a masterpiece, the best of Border Reiver rythm and Piper to the End emotion blended together.
When you leave is amazing despite the lack of guitar.
Very few skippers for me as well. Yes Just a Boy is not my thing, Nobody does that has some dated sound effects, and every heart... is a bit cheesy, but that's about it. The is a great album, I don't understand the negative reviews...
-
Really enjoying it here too. I've got all of them on my iTunes and listen on headphones as I'm on my computer to you 'orrible lot! ;)
A few skippers now though because I start getting really strict at this point, but there are only a few I really don't like. I skip these:
Just a boy (can't get over how Mark thinks he can get away with this inferior copy of JD)
When you leave (classy but boring)
Floating away (really can't get into this)
Slow learner (Zzz...)
Heavy up (it's not for me)
Rear view mirror (it's quirkiness has worn thin)
So when I take these ones out and add the fab bonus tracks I still have a great album there.
OSAAT is one of the all-time greats though, is it not?
-
Well one week later and I listened to the opening track, two singles and presumably the main star of the album (One Song At A Time) only once. Nothing's changed dramatically, I still think it's not the best collection of songs AND arrangements Mark would've put out at this moment (don't even start me talking about the cover picture).
I do enjoy tracks 3, 4, 5, track 7 (Bacon Roll) more than others, tracks 9, 11, 12 and Every Heart In The Room and Matchstick Man. More or less half of the album. Some tracks like Rear View Mirror is something I would listen in the background while doing stuff. Yeah...
It's a good result in my book, because from the artists of older generation usually you'd be lucky to like 2 songs from the new album.

Oh dear, skippers already for you then chap... I love the way there is a good variety of songs rather than one genre. Love the way the album plays in that there are a few brighter, melodic and also quieter, reflective songs. Agree wholeheartedly that OSAAT is a masterpiece and will become an all time great.... Just need to hear this fab song live now!!!

Bacon Roll is maybe the only original song in the album, all the rest is recycled stuff in a brilliant way

I don't think so.

It's easy to compare songs to each other if you seek to do so. Just A Boy is an obvious rip-off mind you. Just enjoy them in their own right. :)

I think the album is pretty good overall, 2nd tier/row as I wrote in another thread, there are several good songs but at the same time they are mostly recycled stuff and after only 1 week I basically already know the album perfectly, there's nothing new to discover

Of course it would be nonsense if OSAAT was not played live, but... Remember that we are talking about the man who couldn't be bothered to play Silvertown Blues, The ragipieker's dream, Punish the Monkey, So far from the Clyde, Long Cool Girl and Basil live, and who only played 5.15am and Yon Two Crowd a couple of times ! So I would not bet my life on it...:/

the live setlist needs a huge revamp
-
So with just over a week now gone by since the official release of DTRW, I have to say personally I just cannot put this album down! My MK Strat has come out of its case for some serious playing!!
I'm with you in that it has inspired me to want to pluck a string again. This record (for me) is getting a lot more play than Tracker ever did, or does. In my own multiverse, I'd delete GOYS and BR and add ALL the bonus songs for the best record since BIA or (my own version of) Privateering.
There are a lot of threads right now, best 5 this, best album that; for consistency (no skippers) I really love Shangri La, Kill to Get Crimson, Privateering and this new one. Happy problems to debate indeed :)
-
I was quite a big fan of tracker, I much preferred it to privateering and get lucky,
I think I like DTRW equally as much as tracker, I love songwriting on the album, there's only a couple of tunes on there that I see myself skipping on occasion. I actually really like BOTDF , I think i'm in the minority there! haha! There's some production choices on the album that make me scratch my head a bit, but overall I think it's a very very strong album. I've come to really enjoy My Bacon Roll, I love the cryptic lyrics and just seems quintessential MK to me,
Very excited about the tour, I think adding the brass is interesting and I have a theory/suspicion there's going to be some extended jams that rely on the trumpet/sax a bit. Perhaps to potentially replace something like TR that relies on the guitar heavily for the big outro.... Just a theory of course. I'm really looking forward to them shaking up the setlist a bit.

You have summed up my thoughts perfectly!

I love all 19 new songs, and the two cover songs he did days ago for BBC radio are great, as well. I made my right choice to have bought three concert tickets in 2019 to see him live !!!
I hope to meet you in Verona, allen! :)
Thanks, we will meet, fingers crossed. Need to buy a litho and a tour programme, as well. And a T-shirt, and some pins, and ...
Good luck with that. Verona is the last show in Europe and usually most of those items are sold out some weeks before. It happened to me in Barcelona last year, I had to buy something for a friend but I couldn't as many items of merchandise were already sold out :(

Ah, in that case, I have to ask friends to help me out with this. Thanks for the info.

After listening to the album for two weeks, I have now deleted two tracks - Just a Boy and Heavy Up and added the three bonus tracks. I now have almost the perfect MK album and it flows much better with Nobody's Child now followed by When You Leave and not interrupted by Just a Boy! :)
-
Down The Road Wherever is a masterpiece!
Beautiful compositions, vocals and guitar by Mark, brilliant band musicians, excellent sound, perfectly arranged and produced.
I listen to the album every day and except for "Nobody Does That", they are all great songs.

Still listening to all 19 tracks, maybe not quite as intensive but when I do I don't feel the need to skip anything just yet... The three bonus tracks are soooooo good

Only just a boy here. Heavy Up makes me happy :-) I agree that it flows much better indeed.

Apart from One Song... I think the three bonus tracks are the best ones. I can't understand why he left them out for something like Sloooow Learner, for example. ???

IMHO, slow learner just works especially where it is placed in the album. I agree all three bonus should of been in the album...
-
Tracker went to the drawer very soon because I kept skipping tracks continuosly... DTRW remains strong and the only track I skip is Heavy Up and just because I want to listen the rest of tracks first and then come back to heavy up.
A very strong record to me and it looks like it's going to be in the player for very long.
-
I definitely still have issues with some production aspects of this album (as discussed at length in other threads), and I'd still wish he would have used the snowy back cover pic for the front (or Quizzie's horse shot from the Hendrik Hanson film).
But that aside, and if you include the b-sides, this might be his best collection of songs since the start of his solo career. It's quite incredible to get 19 songs this good in one go.
In other words: I'll definitely continue listening to this album A LOT.
-
I totally lost interest in this album and haven't listened to it at least a week now. I am disappointed by the lack of depth on the lyrics and musical ideas. I am totally left in disbelief that this should be the result of two years work in the studio and appears to me as nothing short of a musical bankruptcy. Apart from My Bacon Roll I only really like Sky And Water which reflects the MK music that I used to love. All other songs wear the stamp of dullness and lack of creativity, disguised by a very cool sounding landscape of Guyisms but that cannot rescue it.
Sorry don't want to spoil the fun and I am off again already. I can imagine that many fans WANT to like it. No problem with that. I was prepared to love it but I can't. The Matchstick Man post of jbaent and the comparison with a masterpiece like Heart Of Oak brought me back dir a minute. Greetings!

Although I like the album, it is only due to having made some changes - deleting Just a Boy and Heavy Up and I am sure Slow Learner will have the same demise very soon. It sounds much better with the bonus songs added, but I have never had to do this with other albums. I am still listening to Tracker straight through, including bonus songs, without any changes and still love it.

LE, I kind or warn you about this long ago when I told you that this new record has been recorded during the breaks between the works for the musical... I remember telling that probably MK put more of his creativity in the musical, that is something new, a challenge, something he never done before, than into the record.
When the iswc titles appeared here I pointed that it was rare that the numbers of the tracks were not consecutive, and in some cases, some too far from others, and it might means (not necessarily, but likely...) that some of them were songs that didn't make it in previous recording sessions for previous albums. I asked Guy once if the new record was made of new songs or from unfinished or not released before and he answered me something like "a bit of everything".
However, I like this record much more than Tracker, for example, as I find very interesting things musically, like the synths, the brass, the female vocals, the great amount and variaity of percussion over the record, diversity of styles etc etc
Lyrically is not so great as other records, but musically to me is very very interesting and I truly hope he follows this steps for the future, doing interesting and new kind of things he never done before.
-
Oh LE, DTRW isn't that bad is it??
Personally I still haven't got bored of this fabulous 'fresh' sounding album. If it's not being played at home its in the car etc
I do admit subject to mood I only skip 'Slow Learner but otherwise it's still the full 19 tracks...
With regards words/lyrics, when you actually sit quietly and really listen and understand what MK is singing/saying they are just as powerful each time I listen - I do this especially when listening to the Vinyl versions....OSAAT is still my ultimate fave track by a countrymile...
Love the guitar phrasing that we all know is MK and it's only him that can do it that way....
Hopefully you will revisit this lovely album someday...
-
I'm enjoying the album more with each listen.
That said, I don't think the deluxe songs add much (bonus songs better).
Current fave is Floating Away.
I still think the initial praise was over the top though. This doesn't mean I think it's a bad record, far from it. But does anybody REALLY think it's his best ever album?

Wholeheartedly agree that the album seems to just get better with each listen and funnily enough I thought today that 'Floating away' is actually really amazing....
Certainly not his best album but boy its got to be up there hasn't it?

From November 16, I'm listening to this album with the same pleasure and I'm waiting for more ...Two concerts in my country and Local Hero 2.
Listen now, right here
It’s going to be a beautiful year :)

That's interesting...it seemed like you loved most of the album when the leaks/radio shows started coming out. Maybe you were just listening to it too much? I took a week off because I was listening too much and listened to the whole thing today and am surprised how much I like it. As of now it slots right in between Tracker and Golden Heart for my 6th favorite Mark solo album.
-
I'm still having a listen every second day and loving it. Quite impressed with the sound quality, it's the best album I've ever heard in terms of sound engineering. Yes, Don't Suck Me In should've been included, probably used as first single even, but DTRW is terrific regardless imho.
-
Okay, over three weeks and I've started to skip 'Slow Learner' now......Nothing else is being skipped though :wave

A lot of them I like, a few of them I love, a few of them I dislike, two of them are PURE GOLD
And they're One Song at a Time and Don't Suck Me In
-
Can't understand this hatred against Slow learner. Minimalist, but sorrow and sincere. Something like the Beatles' "Yesterday".
One Song At A Time is a masterpiece.
The others are brillant, except (for me):
-The 2 that are not on the deluxe edition (Rear view mirror and Every Heart In The Room)
-Just a boy... just doesn't fit.
-Nobody does that: a bit too much
-
I don't get the hatred either; musically it's a brilliantly written song, very sophisitcated stuff, with an almost Burt Bacharach-ish quality to it. And the recording's got a great vibe going.
I like it waaaay more than say Good on you, Son, which is just ok at best.

Why, just because some of us dislike "Slow Learner" is it now described as "hatred"? I, certainly, don't hate it - it's just a bit too slow for me, that's all and I may even like it, eventually, when I'm in the right mood! Lots of forumers dislike other songs, eg "When You Leave" but I would never accuse them of hatred toward the song. It's just their particular taste, that's all! Hatred is a very harsh word!

Sorry, I guess this is language bias. In French we often say "Pourquoi tant de haine ?" ("Why so much hatred ?" in a joking, exagerating way. I certainly did not mean to say that those who dislike Slow Learner are haters ! Sorry, no offense intended at all.

-Nobody does that: a bit too much
Why, just because some of us dislike "Slow Learner" is it now described as "hatred"? That's OK, Herlock, I understand! :) I prefer to say "dislike" or "dislike intensely" ! ;D

I love Slow Learner
"Slow Learner" is a great song.
Especially if you enjoy it with the headphones.

I listen with headphones a lot, but it still doesn't improve the song! ;)

Of course, if you do not like the style of the song, high-quality headphones will not help either.

I have always been of the opinion that if you listen to any song for long enough, no matter how much you dislike it in the beginning, you will always end up liking it, perhaps even more than those you loved most at first! ;)

It's now been 7 weeks since we all have had the pleasure of owning this fabulous album and personally it's still being played every day, whether on the car stereo into work, headphones whilst out and about, at home on the stereo or 'spinnin' the vinyl editions! and I still am very much in love with it!
I agree with you Val, in that the more you listen the more you love something you perhaps didn't.
This is very true of 'Just a boy' which I now cannot get enough of.
To be honest all of the songs/tunes ARE no doubt individual masterpieces and I cannot get enough!
-
I'm still listening, Knopflerfan, every day and loving it more and more - in fact it's neck and neck with my beloved Tracker and, believe me, that's a huge thing for me to admit! ;) Some songs have taken a while to sink in - Just a Boy and Slow Learner, but I always knew it would happen eventually! :)

This album just blows my mind every time I listen!! I just don't skip anything as again to me are all individual masterpieces...
I have to mention the bonus tracks - Don't suck me in and Sky and Water are just absolute golden greats in my books but of course 'One Song' is without doubt 'the ultimate' for me still!
Regards to you both and look forward to seeing you both in 18 weeks time!!!!
-
Looking forward to seeing you both too and also dmg! Can't wait to hear the new music for LH. :wave

I have really invested some quality time for some deep listening to this album. It is a masterful composition!
As an album, front to back, it verges on the spectacular: the subtle and contrasting instrumentation; the poignant, verging on timeless, vocals; the reflective lyrics of a man with a lifetime of experience; and the flow to the album, well, I love the journey it takes me on.
It's not an album of singles, and I think it does the album a disservice approaching it that way. Mark Knopfler is one of the greats, and he has taken a good while to craft this album in a specific way. The thought put behind the arrangement is evident in the tempo, content, tone and the stylistic variations as we roll down the road from songs one to nineteen.
I enjoy this album very, very much. And I feel blessed to have this quality of work still being put out by my favourite and most the influential artist.
After the gorgeous Tracker album, I am thrilled he's outdone himself. For me, this album is a masterpiece.
