To celebrate, i think i am going to bring forward my Alchemy arrows tattoo. 8) 8)
I wonder if any 'extras' will accompany the Dvd?
As if there's not enough speculation surrounding the release of the new album, this happens.!!!!!
It's good to be alive. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

oh and industrial disease from that night!!

mmm, does he mean vid or audio???

:D Ha, ha, Goldenheart!
What great news! This is what everybody has been waiting for. And even better if it's the the whole concert. Are we sure it's a DVD release, and not just a remix of the album?

You are so right, BBB!

and it still ain't on the "official fan site"!! :-)

What will happen when this is released as simply a 5.1 audio DVD with some lifeless menu and three boring rotating images? That would be too funny- after all this time. :P

And don't forget the highly collectable 100 only numbered edition with exclusive white head band hand signed by Mark himself.
I do believe that Mark will wearing one during the 2010 tour to promote the release of Alchemy on DVD and a surprise dIRE sTRAITS reunion will be held toward 20th of July at the hAMMERSMITH oDEON. (if only I could be right...and be there too!!!!)
-
I`m very excited about this news. As a guitar noodler myself, finding info on why Alchemy has not been re-released was my main motivation for joining the non-guitar MK forums. Now it seems one of the last pieces in the DS puzzle is being put in place.
Thank you MK inc pty/ltd esq. May all your profit margins be exceeded! ;D
The only other DS material that has never been re-released would be the EP songs, right?
-
Surely after all this time, they won't just release it in it's most basic form. :-\
Surely a few exciting extras.?
Only time will tell. :)
Cheers BBB
-
I would be very surprised if this would feature new live footage. I guess that this new version sound more of a Mercury "cash in" (no pun intended this is their job) with minimal to no involvement from Mark. So they take the existing cut, apply some cleaning if needed (this is shot in video format not 35 mm if I remember well), even crop the image to widescreen format, mix the sound for 5.1 and that's it.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't give a fuck about menus.

As long as they don't omit anything I'll be happy :). They can keep their extras.

It looks like it

Let's try to be optimistic - it may be a complete concert! :D

aye aye val!

Mail from Chuck's site:
Question from me: Is this release seeing the daylight this year? I do hope so, been waiting a long time for a Alchemy DVD.
Answer:
I do believe so. I'm not sure what the actual release date is but I presume it to be about the same time as the new Mark Knopfler album which is due out sometime either late Sept or early Oct. Alchemy will be out as a Blue Ray release as well.
So they think it will come out this year. Let's see!
But great to see the Alchemy on Blu-Ray too.

Confirmed by Chuck by e-mail...
The dvd will contains just the concert we all know, he says they were very lucky that they found the multitracks of it, so no extra content, but we

Great news! One puzzling thing: 'original 2" eight track'? Was it only recorded on eight track multitrack? In the early 70s it would be understandable, but by then, it seems a bit odd to me.

Well, that's putting it bluntly. What I actually meant was something along the lines of the 20th Anniversary DVD for BIA though.
-
Terry put up the Alchemy info on the MKNews section now. Release probably April 2010 (for tour start reasons??) but date not definitely yet. And it will
be the video, too. Great! Alchemy as BluRay. I would never have thought that... What a waste...so much data space, and no extras??
LovExpresso
-
Was Alchemy filmed on actual film, or just video? If it was made on film it could look spectacular on bluray. If it's video, then releasing it on bluray is a waste of time.
-
Chuck wrote me the following about Alchemy:
"We remixed the album in surround with a stereo foldown for a blue ray release, just after finishing Mark's new solo album "Get Lucky". I couldn't believe how bad the original album sounded but the performances were unbelievable. What's really remarkable is that it all came from one night with no fixes. Now that a man's band!"
And about Get Lucky:
"I think you will really enjoy this new album. I'm super proud of it. You may have to turn up the volume a notch as we didn't peak limit it to death. I've just approved the vinyl test pressing. Why did we ever get rid of the LP? There's something so wonderful about putting a needle in a groove."
I 'm really excited about both releases! Can't wait...
-
Alchemy from one night only?
I though that it was a mix from just 2 (or3) shows but not a single one.
-
This is great news!
-
ds1984 - On the front of my VHS copy it states that it is a recording of one night's Dire Straits performance. :)
-
It wasn't actually.
Unfortunately Solid Rock was put together from 2 nights, because they (mainly Terry W. I guess :( messed up the end. I don't remember any other examples, I hope there were none.
Btw, both audience recordings (22nd, 23rd July) were uploaded on Spanish City some time ago (more than a year I think).

There is only a few secons of the 22nd because of a mistake from Terry on drums, so they fixed it with that few seconds from the day before, but apart of that, it

Well, I can live those few seconds :) It will still be my most favourite album of all time.

Well, the idea of getting Alchemy on BluRay starts to ring in my mind... I never had expected that! Great news. Who thought MK would go so innovative??
LovExpresso
-
god knows, next you know mark will be handing out lossless usb sticks after the shows of the 2010 tour...personally...
-
There is some hope...
I had the idea about the next tour and set list: Maybe MK will really change the way of his concerts and will feature really great parts of the new record!
And for the "period" people who ask for Dire Straits tracks and the old-times-stuff, well, he releases the Alchemy DVD??? It shall be released in April 2010 I understand, so maybe this is part of the PLAN....
LovExpresso
-
well I thought that Alchemy will be released at some point in the future when MK finally decides to put DS back together for a couple of shows. Now I think that's highly unlikely, but at least we will be getting Alchemy.
-
Does anyone have any fresh news on this?
Someone asked Guy a question about it. He said he knows some details, but can't say anything.
He also said there may be other moves a foot to re-release some other old DS stuff?????? I wonder? :)

My vinyl album of Alchemy states on the back cover "This is a recording of excerpts from one Dire Straits performance. As it contains no re-recordings or overdubs of any kind there are occasional stage buzzes".
It has been a moot point for many years as to whether it encompassed both nights or just the one. I prefer to live in musical heaven/bliss/ignorance and think of it as the one, with no corrections or external interference - don't i just love those 'occasional stage buzzes' :-)
-
Nigel I didn't hear or read anything either! I don't have the VHS tape, so be sure as soon when the DVD is available I will buy it! ;D
Fieneke
-
I own the VHS tape. I had the tape converted into dvd. The quality is not bad. But I'd definitely buy "Alchemy" when it comes out. Is it gonna be in HD ? It's the best concert ever !!!!! It's a must have for die hard fans. Fieneke, if you 're crazy about Mark now, you'd be crazier for him then. :D Just absolutely amazing. It's my most played cd and dvd.

Seem to recall that it was all one night except Terry messed up the end of Solid Rock, so they spliced in a bit from the other night.

I always though it was the best live album until I heard the same tracks from the BIA shows. Live in 85/86 performances of these sounds definitively much better to me.
1991 does provide even better versions : SOS and during the fall part of this tour, R&J
I do prefer Portobello Belle version from the "On Location Tour".

OK, turns out I read it in this very thread!

You would need to ask Bobo for his source I guess. :)
Well, you don't. Just listen to Solid Rock from the 23rd, but to the bootleg, not the official rec. At the end you can hear it.
The cut comes at around 4:32-4:33 on the Alchemy album.
Can't wait till april!!

Thanks, folks, for clearing this up!

I still recall there being some discrepancy over Love Over Gold though. I believe the issue is that Love Over Gold from the CDs (cut out of original LP release) is not from the same show as the video that ended up on the bonus DVD of "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits". In fact, I wonder if Love Over Gold will be included on the new DVD and Blu-Ray releases at all.

I concur with everything you say SweetSurrender - I too had the tape transferred
to DVD and it is THE best ever officially released concert recording ever in my opinion. Apart from Hal Lindes prancing about in his 80's haircut and slacks and Alan Clarkes often (and unnecessarily) too high volumes on his synths that is! :)

Oh, and it's a bit strange that on the video we get the speech before ToL but on the CD it's missing.

and so on, and so on...can we pre orderalready??

Oh, and it's a bit strange that on the video we get the speech before ToL but on the CD it's missing.
Maybe they just cut that part out so that it would fit onto an LP in those days but it's still the same concert. :-\

OK, I'll probably get hounded out of here for saying this but I haven't listened to Alchemy for years, but my memory is that the music plays on but MK's speech is wiped from over the top of it. Could well be wrong though.

Really? I just listened to aLCHEMY cds, SoS: TVBoDS cds, and watched TVBoDS DVD, and to me the songs sound the same. Then I listened to bootlegs from 22nd and 23rd, the version from 22nd sounds slightly different. So I would say it was taken from 23rd July.

I'm the first one to hound out you then!! ;D
The whaaaaat?? For years? I would certainly die without listening to aLCHEMY or any 1983 show at least once per two weeks.
Just listened to it - it wasn't just MKs speech, but the whole segment (music+voice) deleted.

Ah, OK. I have to be honest and say I haven't really listened to much DS for a while, I really do prefer MK's solo stuff these days. I think it's partly because I've listened to the DS stuff so much over the years, I'm just burned out on a lot of it.

I'm beginning to experience that feeling probably, but not to that extent (still prefer DS to MK, and probably always will).
I would love to be in the process of listening to all the bootlegs for the first time again.

but you cannot seriously say you have listened to ALL the boots you got, right bobo??

Haha, ALL of them? ;D Of course not.
Sorry, should've said that to bootlegs from different tours, if you know what I mean.
I had all the albums before bootlegs, so I didn't really know the "missing pieces". Because if you know e.g. aLCHEMY, you know that 1983 shows will be kinda same. But when you discover something completely new, I love that feeling. For example Boston 1980 was almost very first bootleg I heard, and it blew me away!
But anyway, why wouldn't they put LoG on it?! I hope it's just a rumour.
-
But anyway, why wouldn't they put LoG on it?! I hope it's just a rumour.
It wasn't in the vhs release, and I recall Chuck Ainley telling that they were working in exactly the same material used for the vhs, so no extras, no LOG just the vhs but enhaced and remastereded sound in 5.1 (Chuck opinion was very bad about the original sound)
-
What may spoil it is if they process the sound too much when they digitally enhance it. The major quality of Alchemy is that it was almost 'warts and all' with hardly any interference - the on-stage buzzing for example and of course Clarkeys loud synths! It all adds up to make it a unique recording and an experience the listener will not forget.
I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a Hollywood blockbuster soundtrack with bells and whistles coming from every corner of the room as I listen/watch it. I want the feel of a concert not a cinema - I want the sound coming at me 'in my face' not from behind me and under my legs and over my shoulder if you get my drift. :-\
-

OK, as I said, I wasn't 100% sure what the issue was with Lover Over Gold. Waldo would know, as he originally brought it up on our e-mail list a long time ago, but sadly he doesn't come around here much.
I'm still in hope that it will be included on the DVD release. It would make this DVD release a bit pointless if it wasn't. I wouldn't trust that wiki article, as I think they are talking about the VHS release when they say "The song "Love Over Gold" is not included in the video...", but it's not clear.
-
Check this out...this is a live video of Love Over Gold on Youtube, which looks to be from a tape source (?) of some sort (ignore the first 5 seconds). Note the included ending of PI and Hammersmith imagery before LoG begins, which is not on "SOS: The Very Best Of..." compilation videos (both VHS and DVD). This tells me that the live video of Love Over Gold was released at some point before the compilation video was released.

Hey, I just read your comments, and did you guys miss these infos below from JVT?
SECOND NIGHT AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1983
Artist Dire Straits
Venue Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
Date 23rd July 1983
Source Audience
Format 2CD-R
Tracks CD 1 Stargazer
Once upon a time in the west
Industrial disease
Expresso love
Romeo and Juliet
Love over gold
Private investigations
Sultans of swing
Tracks CD 2 Twisting by the pool
Two young lovers
Portobello belle
Tunnel of love
Telegraph road
Solid rock
The rocks and the thunder
Going home
Additional comments Pretty good sound quality! This night was one of the two nights being recorded (22nd & 23rd July) for the famous Alchemy album. This recording is exacly the same as the Alchemy show (but then of course as an audience source), except for one small part... I discovered that the last part of Solid rock of the recording from 22nd July is the same as the last part of Solid rock on Alchemy.
Listening closely to the recording of 23rd July, it's 100% clear that this is the recording that was used for the Alchemy album. Except for the last part of Solid rock which is without a doubt very different. Just compare Alchemy which these two samples:
Solid rock - sample bootleg recording 22nd July 1983 http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/22071983_part_solidrock.mp3
This is exactly the same ending as the recording on Alchemy.
Solid rock - sample bootleg recording 23rd July 1983 http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/23071983_part_solidrock.mp3
The music building up to that very last part is the same as on Alchemy, but the final part is clearly different.
So, I think that this is the case:
The Alchemy recording is completely taken from 23rd July, except for the last part of Solid rock which was taken from the night before.
Anyway, great versions and of course great to hear the songs of this legendary night that did not make it onto the official album: Industrial disease, Twisting by the pool and the very nice version of Portobello belle. There is also some talking of Mark Knopfler during the intros of Romeo and Juliet and Tunnel of love that was edited out on the official album. Tunnel of love has a small skip in the recording, probably due to a tape change. Apart from that, this is the full show from the first to the very last note. This is also the last concert of the Love over gold world tour.
Wishes
Allen

WB and UMG still do not have any schedule for this release. I think the first info will be announced in February or March. And what does it mean "Looks like 'Love Over Gold' WON'T be on the Dvd/Blue Ray release"? There is nothing about it.
P.S. More over I'm sure that Alchemy will not be released in April as promised. All MK/DS re-releases (DVD-Audio SL and STP, BIA SACD/DVD-Audio) were released with seriously delays

LOG is included on "Dire Straits, The Videos" on VHS.
This is on VCD too, think I have a possibly not legit copy somewhere. :-X
-
The fact that they put the Love over gold live video in the THE VIDEOS vhs means to me that they have the whole recording, and I always thought that when you put the old vhs to dvd / blueray you go for the original masters, and at the masters of the filming it should be all the recording, unless they decided to erase all not released material and LO still exists as it was released as a b-side in vynil single, and in the cd and tape edition of Alchemy.
-
LOG is included on "Dire Straits, The Videos" on VHS.
I forgot about that one, thanks! That's probably the source.

Certainly you would imagine that there's a good chance of LOG being somewhere in the vaults in a reasonable state. As for the completely unreleased portions, the problem is that if the other material was never intended for release then there is a good chance that the sources for the video portions of that unreleased content literally ended up on the cutting room floor. This has happened with several 80s concert videos as the idea of a long format concert video was considered 'too much' by many labels (see Genesis - Three sides Live for possibly the worst example) and in many cases the unused footage is lost. Rush have even been asking people who worked on the original projects to come forward if they know where the extra footage is for some of their videos.
