Title: Marks greatest songs as solo artist after DS
Post by: boriszhukov on January 18, 2019, 10:58:20 AM
With the new songs in mind. Has there ever been a polll to which songs would be considered his 'greatest hits' since going solo?

Since the material he has done as solo artist is very different and less commercial than the DS stuff. I think it would be interesting to see which 20 songs would be considered his strongest since DS.

I suppose some of the songs played most often in concert would have to be strongly considered since that would probably would be the material MK considered the strongest.

A quick glance at setlist.com would indicate these (considering mainly that the songs have been played frequently for more than one album tour):

Speedway at Nazareth
What It Is
Hill Farmer's Blues
Marbletown
Sailing to Philadelphia
Done With Bonaparte
Song for Sonny Liston
Why Aye Man
Postcards from Paraguay
Piper to the End
Cannibals
Our Shangri-La
Donegan's Gone

It would be intersting to see the output of a poll on this.

Exciting idea.

IMHO officially released b-sides and bonus tracks should count too.

A favorite song shouldn't be fallen on the altar of record companies greed. :)

Interesting idea, would be interesting to discuss what criteria go to make a good song? For example, I would regard 'Basil' as a far better song then say 'So far away' due to its portrait sonic canvas, others might disagree....

I guess my idea is mainly what 10-20 tracks were to be on a 'Greatest hits' release.

Looking through the albums to decide on my faves I realised there are some that I underestimated at the time.  I seem to have a large number from Get Lucky, an album I thought was not outstanding at the time.  Some of the songs have become classics however and it is surely one of his best solo albums.

On the other hand, despite being a double album Privateering has a poor showing with not a single song making my list.  The title track nearly made it but I had to remove it to make the 20 tracks.

Tracker has been much criticised by myself but it fared better, saved by two outstanding tracks worthy of any album.

The latest thing features well but this is hardly a retrospective view as all the others are, so they may well change after a year or so.  One Song At A Time is an instant classic though.

Is Long Highway technically a DS song though since it was first performed by DS way back in August 1991?  Of course I'd have included it in my list but assumed it wasn't a Knopfler solo track.   ;)
