Like we all know, the whole album could be listened to due to a technical mistake for a couple of hours.
Did someone manage to hear some of the new tunes and could please write something about the sound / style - track by track? Is there a lot of the magic knopfleresque guitar playing? On an other discussion board someone wrote that "You can't beat the house" sounded very bluesy (being similar or reminding on the DS-track "Millionaire Blues")
Would be interesting to read about your feelings as we all are getting more and more excited till the album is out mid-september.

very good point leprechaun.

BORDER REIVER: Fast and catchy track. One of the album highlights. The instrumental parts are very like an scottish reel. It would be my election for radio single.
HARD SHOULDER: Elegant and sophisticated, perhaps it recalls a bit to The Fizzy & The Still, but I like it much more.
YOU CAN'T BEAT THE HOUSE: I can't say it's bluesy... I can say IT IS a blues. It's the more traditional blues in Mark's career. Very good guitar licks, and excellent blues piano by Matt Rollings.
BEFORE GAS & TV: Slow scottish tune, very heart moving with excellent arrangement.
MONTELEONE: It could be the soundtrack of a 50's italian film. Fantastic atmosphere with the orchestra. A great track.
CLEANING MY GUN: It's the only rocker in the whole album. You can recall Boom Like That and Imelda. Great guitar parts.
THE CAR WAS THE ONE: Another elegant track, played with guitar pick.
REMEMBRANCE DAY: Very moving. If it don't bring you to tears, you're made of stone. The children chorus is truly beautiful.
GET LUCKY: You know it. Simply wonderful.
SO FAR FROM THE CLYDE: The best of the album, in my opinion. Mark's voice, the chorus, the celtic instruments, the Les Paul guitar.... all incredible, amazing, moving.... One of the master works from Mark.
PIPER TO THE END: Another master work. Incredible scottish sound. The end part (that fades) is the best instrumental in the whole album. Incredible. The celtic musicians in all their mastery.
It's the best album from the solo career? Possibly. Time will say.

Just curious: Why did the other GL thread disappear? Did I miss something? ???

I wrote my thoughts track by track on the thread that was deleted. I guess we're not allowed to say anything as the message at the top says "please do not discuss songs that have not been released yet". I really hope AMIT isn't turning into an over-moderated forum like MKNews. I came here to get away from that.
When a new album is released there will be people wanting to talk about it. Reviewers will have copies already and they will be describing the songs. If people can't talk about songs here then they will go elsewhere, and AMIT will start losing members like MKNews did.
If a magazine or newspaper includes a review, are we not allowed to post it? I mean, those songs haven't been released yet, so it would be against the rules, right?
If we hear a new song on the radio, I assume we're banned from talking about that?
I'm pretty sure even MKNews has allowed people to TALK about MK albums before they were released. There's a HUGE difference between posting/asking for links to mp3s and just talking about these songs.
I have visited the forums of a lot of different artists and their albums always leak before the release date, but only strictly moderated forums try to stop people discussing new material.
If the single is Remembrance Day then it's likely that Radio 2 will be playing it within a week or two. Will we not be allowed to talk about it?
This is depressing.

Sorry, I'm confused! ??? We are told (above) that we must not discuss new songs and then this thread appears, "Get Lucky" - Track by track"! What are we to talk about?? ???
So Pottel, why this new thread? It doesn't make sense! ::)

I don't understand this either.
News: the Get lucky on MK.com thread was removed. please do not discuss songs that have not been released yet - Pottel
And now we are going to discuss the new songs? Are we allowed now?
-
Thanks for telling us some more details about the new material.
Oh, I didn't know that there was another thread that has been closed before BUT it is not understandable for me.
I mean, this is a forum where people are free to express their feelings and opinions and since we are not insulting, discriminating or abusing each other or do not upload the whole album before release it is ok in my eyes.
So come on boys and girls, please let this forum be a real forum and not something strictly controlled. For that we have the official MKnews-forum. BTW, anyone knows other MK-forums that is recommendable??
-
Nice to see you on this forum too, Leprechaun! It's an extremely nice forum, all our old friends are here, discussing like we did back in the old days:-)
Therefor it's strange to see that we are not allowed to discuss the GL album. Remember that this is an unofficial and indipendent forum. Then it's never wrong to discuss anything we have heard, we know etc. as long as it's not about someones private life, discriminating, offending etc. If a country made it illegal by law, it would violate the European Human Rigts Convension article 10 about freedom of expression and corresponding regulations of the various international human rights convensions. Something totally different is to violate copyright law, but that will be illeagel after the release date too.
So please: let us be able to discuss what have heard, unreleased music included. It's not illegal or immoral. It's the opposite that is immoral.

No, GH, i took the liberty to delete it. coz the trend in the posts was going in the wrong direction. i hate deleting threads, and am still in guilt a bit with this one,

it was the level of some posts, accusing other fans that made me delete the thread. deleting it was maybe the wrong decision, could have also simply closed it, but hey, a lotta water under the bridge now. just keep it civilised.

Oh, I must have missed the accusing other fans part; but I'm glad it wasn't because some critical thoughts about GL were uttered because I think we should be open to criticism even though we all love MK's music.

A resonable decision, Pottel, as long as it's not because we discussed the unreleased tracks. I see you changed the reasoning - good! :D

No, it wasn't, it was a shame to delete the whole thread for that but there was some strange comments which did not have their place on this forum.

I too, love the whole album, but my only smallish gripe is that I feel "Beat the House" seems to spoil the atmosphere of the album for me - it just seems a bit out-of-place somehow, but I like it anyway.
I couldn't possibly choose a favourite, because I really love all of the tracks!
"Before Gas & TV" is wonderful - the guitar and pipes give me goosepimples.
"Monteleone" is sublime, MK in waltztime - a bit in the style of "Heart Full of Holes".
"Cleaning My Gun" is a great rock song, wonderful guitar.
"Remembrance Day", "So Far From the Clyde" and "Piper to the End" are just SO beautiful, they brought me to tears!
"Get Lucky" of course is wonderful and MK's voice is amazing.
"Border Reiver" I can just see as a great opener for the next tour.
"Hard Shoulder" and "The Car's the One" took longer for me to appreciate, but after a few listenings, I am fine with them now.
A really wonderful album, which has exceeded all my expectations.
-
Thanks, Pottel, for changing the reason for deleting the previous thread! :)
-
Ooohhh because I was away on vacation, I see I am too late to listen to the other songs. I only heard the song "Get Lucky" and I LOVED it! Great voice of Mark and BEAUTIFUL music! :P
Reading the comments of the other tracks, I am so excited now and need to listen also! Were some of you able to download the songs that quick and can I find them somewhere, or do I have to wait till the new album comes out? :'( ..........My heard is beating wild, I am afraid I can't wait that long! ;D

Hi fieneke,
I hope you had a nice holiday! ;) The songs were online for a couple of hours and were streaming media like "get lucky" is. Downloading is not possible as far as I know but I think that will change in the next few weeks. From the ragpickers dream on, an album was online before the actual release. ;) I've listened most of the songs a few times online and in my opinion it is a nice album. KTGC was "good" but GL album is much much better in my opinion.
-
Like I said in the deleted thread, I was very sceptical first but I've been listening to the album for the last couple of days and now I love it! Yes, I still think some of the musical themes are very familiar, and I still don't know if MK sometimes copies himself consciously or subconsciously... Strange, but as long as one song doesn't sound like another on the same album (like it's VERY often the case with new albums nowadays) and each tune has its individual character, I shouldn't complain.
I also said it would be nice if he was a little more daring regarding new instruments/sounds and I still think so to some extend but then I wonder how some of the tunes might sound then. They'd be something entirely different, probably sound totally overproduced. So I can very well live without additional saxophones or lap steels. In fact, this is what disturbed me a little during the last Straits tour. The arrangements of the songs (well, some of them) were too overloaded, Romeo & Juliet for example. MK knows which instrumentations fit to his songs and I shouldn't doubt his ability.
About the lyrics, it's true that some themes like the theme of the title track have been there a couple of times before but having read some of the comments about it here, I think it's perfect the way it is. I can't really say anything about the other song lyrics yet as I haven't seen them before me (and as a non-native speaker it's always a little tricky to decipher sophisticated lyrics when you're not familiar with some of the words, even if you've studied English literature, LOL) and I shouldn't make a judgement before I have read them thoroughly.
As for a track-by-track analysis - like I said, it's difficult to say something about the songs without knowing the lyrics properly, so I'll need some more time to listen closely until we have the CD booklet. I've started to transcribe "So Far From The Clyde" because that was the one which interested me the most. Here is my attempt - any corrections are very welcome.
So Far From The Clyde
They had a last supper
The day of the (I think it's the name of the ship, it sounds like Beaching or something but I'm not sure)
She's a dead ship sailing
Skeleton Crew
The galley is empty
The stove pots are cooling
And what's left of the stew
The time is approaching
The captain moves over
The hangman steps in
To do what he's paid for
With the wind down the tide
She goes proud ahead steaming
And he drives her hard into the shore
So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride
A sift (?) to a wave (?)
From her ??? to her rudder
Bravely she rises to meet with the land
Under their feet they all feel her keel shatter
Shadows seen washes their hands (I know this makes no sense tense-wise but it's what I understand, LOL!)
Later the captain
Shakes hands with the hangman
And climbs slowly down
To the oily wet ground
Goes 'bout(?) to the car that has come here to take him
To the graveyard and back to the town
So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride
They pull out her cables
And hack off her hatches
Too poor to be wasteful with pity or time
They swarm on her carkers (?) with torches and axes
Like a whale on the bloody shore lies (Oh dear, this image gives me goosebumps!)
Stripped of her pillars
They stay at her stantions (?)
When there's only her bones on the wet poison land
Steel ropes will dragger with winches and engines
'Til it's only a stain on the sand
So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride
Wow. Now that I've read it entirely, what a scary, sad image of the poor old ship being, well, dismantled... The last verse almost makes me cry.
I need to look at the other song lyrics; could it be that death is a subtle red thread on this album? (Piper To The End, Remembrance Day...)?
EDIT: Did a quick research... I think this song refers to this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_River_Clyde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_River_Clyde)
-
Thank you LocalHero, we had a wonderful vacation and enjoyed it to be there!
Thank you Miriam for the lyrics! I didn't hear the song, so I don't have the melody, but I like the lyrics! ;D ........You know reading them remind me a bit of the lyrics of My Claim To Fame, a song which is one of my favourites! :P
Well a song can live forever and a day
An old ship goes to the breakers yard
In a hundred years you're gonna hear him play
They won't remember me for working hard
Now they've all gone away, all the boys and the girls
They yard is a grave where the river runs through
We used to build the ships for the whole wide world
Now we couldn't do it if we wanted to
I am looking forward to read other lyrics!
Fieneke
-
Yes MK likes singing about ships :)
But I think these lyrics ("So Far From The Clyde") are really dark, and I have the feeling quite a few others on the album are, too...
I'd like to know if SFFTC (there we have those knutty abbreviations again, LOL) refers to the ship itself or the ship building business on the River Clyde in general?
-
Remembrance Day is a great song, don't think it is for radio but a great song it is.
The part Mark is singing the names is so cool. I can't stop listening to this song.
Even my 3 years old daughter is singing this song, the "We will Remember Them" part.

Finished my transcript of "Piper To The End". This one has far less question marks ;D It's about Mark's uncle who fell in WWII, right?
Very touching... Reminds me a little of "Brothers In Arms", only that this song is more personal.
Piper To The End
When I leave this world behind me
To another I will go
And if there are no pipes in heaven

Miriam - I thought "So Far From the Clyde" had a kind of aura of BIA at the end also! I think it is the guitar sound! :)

Well as Mark said himself the song is about his heartfelt remembrance of the great ships, so this could be right.

Thank you very much, again! I appreciate your transcriptions a lot, because I can understand english, but not much of the spoken language.

Here is Remembrance Day, it is not 100% but I think it's pretty close.
Remembrance Day
Arm your maple green
See the winding morris man
Angry alfie bill and can
Waving hanky sticks in books
All the earthings looks
Standing at the greece
the best man takes a look around
the boys are fielding on homeground
The steeple sharp against the blue
When I think of you
Sam and Andy
Jack and John
Charlie, Martin
Jamie, Raul
Harry, Steven
Will and Don
Mathew, Michael
On and On
We will Remember them
Remember Them
Remember Them
We will Remember them
Remember Them
Remember Them
Time has slipt away
The summer skies to autumn here
A Hazy smoke across the fields
Next ?men fight another round
And walk the stubblet ground
When November brings
The puppy's on Remembrance Day
When the vicar comes to say
may god bless them everyone
Lest we forget our sons.
We will Remember them
Remember Them
Remember Them
We will Remember them
Remember Them
Remember Them
We will Remember them
Remember Them
Remember Them
We will Remember them

Wow,
thanks to everyone who was busy translating, Jeroen and Miriam!!
There are some lines which I really think are among the best ones MK has ever written. I think being able to read Mark Knopflers lyrics alone is a good
reason to speak english! ;D
To Pottel: I have no problem with closing down the older thread - hope none of my posts was to blame for that. But everybody here seems to be busy as a bee, and now we start the same thread again, so no problem at all. Great work!

I really think a lot of MK's lyrics are more insightful than some of my English classes at university ever were. It's amazing how much you can learn about history. Also, his ability to weave music and words together in a way that it creates an atmosphere which perfectly fits to the story, the general perception of life during the time in which it takes place and the characters he created is astounding and a fantastic literary quality. LE mentioned "Get Lucky" earlier, that one is a good example. You really see that simple but happy farmer guy walking down the street, sun shining, happiness all the way. My personal favourite is 5:15 am. One of the best short stories I have ever read and which makes me wish MK would write a novel someday. If only all those people complaining how boring MK's music has become and that the ol' Dire Straits days were more entertaining would realise this.
-
Fully agreed here about 5.15 am! Masterpiece. Alone the what I call "time-tunnel" sequence, when he jumps back in time a hundred years and shows us what REALLY was important to the people at the Tyne is awesome... Oh, could talk about it for (p)ages, but this is not the right thread... ::)

Jeroen, I hope you don't mind if I fill in a few gaps:
On your maypole green
See the winding morrismen
Angry Alfie, Bill and Ken
Waving hankies, sticks and ?
All the earthen roofs
Standing at the crease
The batsman takes a look around
The boys are fielding on homeground
The steeple sharp against the blue

Will and Don

The Summer sky to Autumn yields
A haze of smoke across the fields
Let's sup and fight another round
And walk the stubbled ground
When November brings
The poppies on Remembrance Day
When the vicar comes to say
May God bless them every one
Lest we forget our sons
We will remember them, etc...

Jeroen, I hope you don't mind if I fill in a few gaps:
Your English is much better then mine. But I wasn't far from the right lyrics.
I did study English but there are so many words I don't know. Thanks for the filling in.

A resonable decision, Pottel, as long as it's not because we discussed the unreleased tracks. I see you changed the reasoning - good! :D
Yes, good decision Pottel. I was worried when I read we couldn't discuss the new songs! Hopefully next time only the nasty posts will be deleted instead of the whole topic...there were some interesting posts on that thread.
In case anyone is interested here are my thoughts on the songs after listening non-stop since Tuesday:
Border Reiver: The introduction is (in my opinion) the most beautiful thing MK has done in years, maybe since the Golden Heart album. Very Celtic. Then the band kicks in and it's a great foot-tapping, up-tempo song. It's the most catchy track he has recorded in years and I agree with the person who said it sounded like a sequel to What It Is. This is the one GL song I keep humming and it's probably his best opening song for an album since What It Is. In fact, Border Reiver has gone straight to my list of "all-time favourite MK songs". This would have been my choice for the first single and it would be a great shame if it didn't get played live. I don't think I'd describe it as a rocker, but it has so much more energy than anything on his last few albums. This should get people up and dancing if it's played live.
Hard Shoulder: Not a favourite but it's growing on me. This is one of the few that could easily fit on KTGC. It kinda reminds me of A Place Where We Used To Live. I already rather like it and it gets better every time I listen to it. Mark plays with a plectrum on this one.
You Can

@TommyJ88:
Great post! Completely agree with almost everything. You describe the feeling that I had during the "Tuesday-Two-Hour-Late-Night-Free-Show" very exactly.
I looove "Before Gas & TV and long for hearing it again. I had hoped for a song in the style of "Fare Thee Well Northumberland" with its epic build-up,
and here it is. Also "Border Reiver" is very catchy. And the lyrics of "Piper to the End" are REALLY touching. When I heard him sing "this has been a day to die on/ now the day is almost gone/here the pipes will lay beside me/silent with the battle drum I really had a very strong emotion - and the lyrics gave me the feeling that they were more than just lyrics. Sounds maybe absurd but it was like with great... poetry. You feel it somewhere in your stomach, it is a direct sensation in the truest sense of the word. Thanks to the good translation work in this thread I remember again the lines in "So Far From The Clyde", and that song struck me immediately, too. He has a way with maritime themes.
But "Get Lucky" for me stands above all, at the moment. "You win some" is sung so nice, his voice in this song is so warm and friendly and chilled -
I didn

Wow, I missed out! I can't believe so many of you have heard the entire album already! I will wait ....... I have no choice :'( I've waited this long, what's another month. From reading your posts, it sounds like there are some great songs. I would expect no less from MK!!!! :-*

someone can write me the lyrics of hard shoulder please?
thanks
Hard Shoulder
I've got latches for windows
handles for doors
grinders and scrapers
and sanders for floors
rake for the gravel
chains for the snow
always got the shovel
you never know
I never thought you'd go
man's broken down
man's broken down
on the slip road
got a slip load
and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on
hacksaws and hammers
brushes and mop
and I've got the ladders
up on the top
if something needs doing
I always say
you want it done
the proper way
I need you to stay
man's broken down
man's broken down
on the slip road
got a slip load
and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on
give me a minute
we'll be going again
sound as a bell
right as rain
right as rain
and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on
to cry on

The leak on the internet seems to become a real issue. Maybe it's just a promotional thing to make more people buy the deluxe edition! ;D Just kidding. ;) Can't imagine someone really paid no attention putting valuable information online. ::)

You could easily tag Monteleone onto the end of Heart Full of Holes and nobody would notice, they sound so alike. The strings are a nice addition, though.

Is there anyone left like me, who hasn't even listened to Get Lucky yet?
It's driving me mad. Don't know how long i can hang on.
I find myself pacing around the house like an expectant father waiting for the new MK album to be born.!!!!
I need some help.!!!!!!!
I've even tried repeatedly listening to KTGC over and over again, just to listen to see if i'd missed a tiny bit of guitar or something. I've also been listening to the 'A Shot At Glory' soundtrack, purely because some people have said that some of the tracks sound a bit similar just to get me through.
Am i stupid, or should i just give in.?
Cheers BBB

Same here. I am enjoying the wait, it's part of the fun I think. I think I have changed my mind about the box, I'll buy it and listen to the album for the first time on vinyl.... can't beat that...

It is a bit difficult, but it's standard procedure when it comes to albums I know I will buy anyway. The same goes for albums by Dylan and Springsteen.
I'm glad to see that the reviews are so positive, though that tends to be the case before release. I did not enjoy SL or KTGC very much (though I like Roadrunning a lot) and I hope for a change in direction. Ironically, while many seem to say that GL continues in the same vein as KTGC, many also say that it's overall a more energetic and Les Paul-based sound. Roll on Sep 14!

Hi Tallgren,
IMO,which is not worth very much,GL is by far a better album than KTGC or SL. I'm not really into guitars & I couldnt tell you if MK played a Les Paul or a strat :o :o but this album is has a lot more solos than both of those,MK sings & sounds better & the whole set up is better.I know that its miles away from his DS years but its a good bit closer than we've been for a while plus the lyrics are up there with the best that he has produced.
-
That sounds great Waterline Man! I don't need anything spectacular to be happy, just something that grabs my attention.
-
OK, I caved and just listened to the album. Initial thoughts after a first listen:
BORDER REIVER: Well, at least it's upbeat. But to be honest, I'm not a big fan of this "fiddle-dee-diddle" Celtic rock thing. Maybe it's because I'm Scottish, we have some truly, truy awful Scottish bands like Runrig and Wolfsbane that play this kind of stuff and I've spent most of my life trying to avoid them. So it's not one of my favourites. The actual song is pretty good I think, I just don't really like the accordian/fiddle bits inbetween verses.
HARD SHOULDER: Nice track. Verty atmospheric, sounds like an old 60s/70s Glenn Campbell track, I was thinking of Witchita Lineman or something like that.
YOU CAN'T BEAT THE HOUSE: Quite a departure from MK, surely the closest we've come to blues from him and great to prove that he can indeed play the blues. Great licks, I wonder if this is the Grosh on this track? I'm thinking P90s anyway.
BEFORE GAS & TV: Another nice folky tune, the Les Paul works well here.
MONTELEONE: Sounds fantastic. For the first minute or so the hairs were standing up on the back of neck and I could feel tears welling up, just because it sounded so beautiful. I found myself thinking "Why are people comparing this to Heart Full of Holes, it's very different". Then I got to THAT line. One line of melody and chord changes that is almost identical to Heart Full of Holes. Very strange. I mean, it's MK's song, so he can duplicate it if he wants I guess, but it seems bizarre to do it on the next album. Kind of threw me, I was really enjoying the song up to that point.
CLEANING MY GUN: Only listened once so far, but could this be my favourite? Great upbeat country rocker. Before I listened I was wondering where Richard Bennett's 12-string Burns would come and I'm pretty sure it's on this track.
THE CAR WAS THE ONE: KTGC style track. Nothing remarkable on first listen. OK though.
REMEMBRANCE DAY: Nice tune.
GET LUCKY: We know this one. Great tune, I'm starting to get used to the whistle where the guitar solo should be.
SO FAR FROM THE CLYDE: Nice Les Paul work on here. Folky feel, but not overpowered by the folk instruments like, say, Border Reiver or Secondary Waltz.
PIPER TO THE END: Another nice tune. Reminds me a bit of Lily of the West.
Overall, I like it after first listen. But I need to listen to it another 20 times or so to see if the songs get under my skin or not. It's not as folky as I thought it would be, which is good, some other styles in there too.
-
OK, I caved and just listened to the album. Initial thoughts after a first listen:
you are so weak ;D

But I need to listen to it another 20 times or so to see if the songs get under my skin or not.
They will.

you are so weak ;D
I know. Every other album I've managed to wait, but everybody else seemed to be listening this time. I was going to listen to the version from mk.com, but the quality was awful. The subsequent torrent release sounds great though.
-
I was having a look last night while i was on my MAC at home and yes - i found THE torrent in question -it was in 256kb IIRC so pretty good quality - but NO i didnt press download.....I really wanted to but ill pop to the shops and buy a new copy when it comes out! Oh the will power! Can i brag?? ;D
(but saying that i am listening to Border Reiver on You Tube' as i write this - but that doesnt count!! LOL!! ;D)
-
Ah Dusty i knew we'd get to you ;D
In relation to Border Reiver,my wife loves traditional Irish music ie the diddle didle stuff which I cant stand & she's not entirely into the MK thing either but I think that MK has found a middle ground here for us.She hasn't listened to any of the GL tracks yet but I know that BR is more on the line of what she would listen to.
IMO I think it would make a great intro soundtrack for a Dick Turpin /Robin Hood flick where you have a highway man on the run ::) ::)
The legend of "Dusty Turpin" ::)
-
The legend of "Dusty Turpin" ::)
Are you calling me a Dick?
I think you're right though, the middle bits sound like the soundtrack to some awful film about Rob Roy or something like that, weakest track of the album for me. And it's the first single!
Although Boom Like That is probably my least favourite track from Shangri La (still good though) and True Love Will Never Fade probably my second worst from KTGC, so it shows what I know.
-
Anyway Dan, how did you manage to download teh album anyway, did you get one of your kids to do it for you? ;)
-
I pretty much like all of GL more than I did KTGC, except for Before Gas & TV which is turgid beyond belief. I wish he'd give the straight ahead folk stuff a rest. I'd have thought he'd got that out of his system with KTGC. You Can't Beat the House is a bit too generic and derivative too.
I think the strings add an extra dimension this time, though, and they're very pretty on Monteleone.
-
The only song I still have problems with is "The Car Was The One". He really must have a fetish for that whammy bar and guitar pick combination... I don't know why but it really really gets on my nerves. Twang, twang... It fits to the song of course but I wish he'd give it a rest.
As for "Before Gas & TV", there is a point about it being turgid, for me it's first and foremost the outtro which is way too long and repetitive. Same goes for the endings of "So Far From The Clyde" and "Piper To The End". Those are fantastic songs but I miss a little bit more creativity.
-
Yes, those three trad. folk songs are too much on an album of only 11 tracks. He should mix it up a bit and take a few more risks, which he has done to a certain extent with the addition of strings.
As for the whammy bar - yes, it is a bit annoying and another thing I thought he'd got over after KTGC. It's a really dated sound and makes songs sound like they should be on the soundtrack to ITV's Hearbeat.
-
Listened to the download twice now. For the first time in over 30 years I am a little bit disappointed. Not an instant song which I go back to immediately. That happened with every CD of MK till now. For me no real surprises, too quiet, too predictable. Some nice songs like Monteleone and Get Lucky. Border Reiver is nice as well, but I think it is too Celtic for me to play it very often. But maybe it will grow on me.
-
"Before Gas & TV" is the best track on the album. I deeply hope they do this song live. In no way I would never call this song "turgid". IMHO of course!!!
LE
-
Get Lucky would probably be my instant song, but then I've had it in the car for a week now and listened to it lots of times. Cleaning My Gun too.

I was dissappointed at first and couldn't hear much development from KTGC. Initially it sounded like more KTGC-esque folky and sleepy dirges occasionally broke up by a couple of mid-tempo plodders.
But it soon grew on me to the point that I prefer it to KTGC (those three folk songs I mentioned before aside).

I was thinking about this yesterday when I saw the list from the mistake they made at the official site.
Every song ended with 1, like Border Reiver 1 , So Far From The Clyde 1.
BUT!!!
Get Lucky ended with 2. So maybe this Get Lucky we are listening to is the acoustic version from the DVD and we will Get a totally different version on the real cd.
Just my thought.

Um, well I've listened to the torrent version and it's exactly the same as the streamed version from mk.com, so I guess highly unlikely.
I would imagine the DVD is probably a solo acoustc performance from MK, like Secondary Waltz at Hay on Sky.

Not possible to upgrade the bitrate, once it's lossy it's lossy.

It was the very same with me. I listened to the album REALLY LOUD in the car yesterday (the car I drive still has a cassette player BTW, LOL) and it literally blew me away. I love it, even though I share the mentioned weak points and I also can understand Ingrid's view. But, as someone told me after my first reaction, give the album time :)

The DVD contains also a video of Remembrance day (according to bol.com this afternoon).
All I can say is that I'm very pleased with this new album. I was always a fan of GH but GL is really my favourite album now. For me, none of the DS records comes close to this one. So far from the clyde is a kind of better "version" of BIA in my opinion. Border reiver is just fantastic. It's really the first album without any skippers for me. Can't wait to hear the bonus songs, the REAL CD and vinyl (hope the sound is different just like KTGC). If this is Mark's new style, I'll look forward to his next records! :D

Forgot to mention, nice mandolin from MK on The Car Was the One driving the track along. :)
-
Still only listened a couple of times, but Hard Shoulder is my current favourite. Just beautiful.
I think MK's vocals are a bit half-arsed on You Can't Beat The House and Cleaning My Gun though, could do with more "oomph" on the rocky tracks.
-
Can't stand the beginning of The Car Was The One. Always hated his love of copying Hank Marvin. Im too young to appreciate The Shadows but for me the only decent thing to come from Hank Marvin is the cockney rhyming slang for being hungry. Seriously if I ever met MK I would snap all his plectrums in half. Best song so far for me is a toss up between Before Gas and TV and So Far From The Clyde. Although I like the use of strings on Monteleone. Very theatrical like Neil Hannon's stuff. Must say though it's better as a whole album than SL and KTGC as both of them ran out of steam half way through and sent me to sleep. A bit like this long rambling post........................
-
Meanwhile, I must say I really love "The Car Was The One". (To be honest, I love the whole album, hard to name a failure or a bad song).
The lyrics are very nice I think, funny. He paints this naive picture of himself in 1963, and I remember an interview once where he said that the only things that were important in his youth were "girls and cars. And girls. And girls. And cars. And also cars and girls..."
The Hank twang isn

Tank you, I love those lyrics straightaway. He's painting a vivid picture here. I love racing and the old cars from the past when racing was adventurous and the tracks more beautiful than today's concrete jungle.
Now I'm really looking forward to hear this track!
-
I haven't listened to anything yet and I don't think I will. I have read some of the reviews though.
Are you finding it as difficult as i am?
Like you, i love reading the reviews.
Cheers BBB
When I came back from vacation and read that some people were able to listen to the whole album, I didn't want to wait and wanted to hear the songs also! Whaauww I felt so excited, BUT .......although I got a link, I haven't been listening yet to the new album! ;)
I could download, but Jans told me to be careful because the album isn't released yet. As always I am careful and don't want to get in trouble, so although it is hard to wait and I am very, very curious, I decided to wait till I have the CD+DVD in my hands in about .......26 days! :o Be sure I will be counting the days! ;D
Uuuhh of course just like everybody I listen to the beautiful songs Get Lucky and Border Reiver at Youtube and like to read all the lyrics! ;D
.
Quote BBB : "Anyway, BBB stands for 'Big Breasted Blonde' (my favourite type of lady)"
*looking at my body, I see I am not very Big Breasted, I am not Blond, I even am not sexy :o but ......... hey Nigel, I thought you loved me too!!! ;D ;D

Interesting that The Car Was the One is splitting opinion. I can see why people are fed up of teh Hank sound, and if it had been the whole album like that again I would have been dismayed. But it does work well on this track I think. And regardless of the production it's a strong song overall I think, ie music and lyrics.
Not convinced it's a true story about MK as a youngster though, I saw it as MK singing as an American kid in the 60s (all the stuff about Corvettes and corn fields, you don't get them in Newcastle). Could be wrong though...

Yes, Dusty, that

I think Hard Shoulder is great as is Monteleone (even though it's essentially Heart Full of Holes part 2). The strings really compliment and expand his sound.
You Can't Beat The House is half arsed full stop. It sounds like the sort of thing that he would have thrown away on a B side ten years ago. I'd be interested to see what the 3 extra tracks on the deluxe set are like in the light of that.

I really like Monteleone. Much better track than Heart Full of Holes IMO, and not particularly similar apart from that one line of melody and the fact that they are both mid-tempo waltzes.

As I didn't listened to the whole album yet, I'm afraid I can't help right now. Is it just me ;) or is anyone thinking too, that unscrambling the lyrics of MK is really interesting?!

Yes, Monteleone is much better than Heart Full of Holes but I still think it could be tagged onto the end of that song as a coda and no-one would notice they were two different songs.
-
Just have to agree to disagree! I think Monteleone is a much more lush and happy sounding song, each to their own. :)

After listening to the tracks in my car it's growing on me. There are some beautiful songs on it, also some boring ones inmy opinion, but I will give them some more time :)
-
Some of the songs are really getting under my skin... in the past few days I've had Piper Till The End, The Car Was the One and Remembrance Day stuck in my head at various points.
The only song that I haven't really got into so far is Gas and TV.

I also wake up with the tune of Remembrance Day. Get Lucky is one of my faves too.

lol, fortunately it's pretty thick... not as much of it as you have though. ;)

Ok...ive relented and ended up listening to it......
The only "skipper" so far is 'You cant beat the house' - the rest....oh yes....i like! ;D
-
I like every track now without exception! It's so nice to listen to a whole album without skipping any. At first I found "Hard Shoulder", "You Can't Beat the House" and "The Car Was the One" a bit difficult, but they're fine now! ;D It's hard to pick favourites, but "Monteleone" is sublime and dreamy and in "Before Gas & TV" I love the whistle and guitar solos especially. :)
-
to me no tracks to skip. the only 2 I like a bit less are Hard shoulder and The car was the one, but no so bad. So far from the Clyde is, in my opinion, one of the best tracks that Mark has ever composed.
-
I agree that these melodies get under the skin. If I listen too close to bedtime, they are going round in my head all night! I love "Piper to the End", "So Far From the Clyde" and "Remembrance Day", but these songs, in particular, stick in my head! ;D

Hey, I'm gonna get you too .....
-
I've listened to it countless times and the only skippers are the turgid and dreary Before Gas and TV and the pedestrian, bored pub band on a Sunday night You Can't Beat the House.
There's nothing on the album I really love (once again it's all a bit too restrained and 'pleasant'), but I think the addition of strings on Monteleone and Hard Shoulder take the songs to another level. Definitely a step up from KTGC overall - at least you don't have to look for the guitar solos this time.
-
pjh3121, I really don't know how "Before Gas and TV" could be described as turgid or dreary. It's one of the best on the album as far as I am concerned. I absolutely love it! :D As I always say, it would be boring if we all liked the same thing - then there would be nothing to discuss! ;D
-
For me, the only skipper is Cleaning my Gun. So Far from the Clyde, Piper to the End, Get Lucky, Remembrance Day get the most play so far. Piper to the End may end up being BIA's brother.
I've been curious about the cover art since I've heard the music. I don't see the connection yet.

Because it seems to go on forever in a painfully slow loop and it's repetitive. Still, as you say, each to their own ;)

Wow Iris it's funny that we all have differing opinions. For me " Cleaning My Gun" is one of the best tracks on the album. A few people on here and other forums have been desperate for a real "heavier/rockier" track for a long time,me included.I love the Gibson power on this track and for me this is one of the reasons why i believe this is his best solo album since Golden Heart. The mix on this album i feel is spot on and i honestly can't think of a skipper on this album

Hi
It's the fisrt time I write something on the forum, and the new MK album is a good occasion to start !
First of all, I ordered my Get Lucky deluxe box on amazon.fr
And after reading your comments, I couldn't resist downloading the album !
After listening to GL twice, I must admit that I'm a little disappointed :-\
The album seems very quiet and very celtic !
All the celtic things MK has done isn't my cup of tea !
Border Reiver : nice intro, up tempo celtic song, good !
Hard shoulder : a little boring, maybe it'll grow
You can't beat the house : very nice and unexpected song, blues, boogie woogie, yeah !
Before Gas & TV : nice but repetitive
Monteleone : there's a verse that sounds like Heart Full Of Holes, but unlike HFOH, it's quiet slow...
Cleaning My Gun : a rocky song, cool, it's a long time since MK hadn't written any ! I like it very much !
Tha Car Was The One : very quiet and that Hank Marvin sound again ! Maybe it'll grow...
Remembrance Day : that's a cool song, nice guitar and the children's voices add something very original !
Get Lucky : very nice guitar but I would have preferred a guitar solo than a flute solo !
So Far From The Clyde : niceit makes me think about A Shot At Glory soundtrack
Piper To The End : nice nice, but I prefer the country style of MK than the celtic style !
-
Hi Fred
First of all, welcome to the best MK forum in the world! Nice to have yuo with us.
Thanks for your review. I also prefer the country style, but after listening to GL quite a few times now, I have to say, these are really good songs. I keep getting them stuck in my head, Border Reiver there today. :)
-
I've forgotten about calling any MK songs skippers after hearing Sonny Liston, Donnegans Gone,Marbletown & Hill Farmer Blues live :o :o.
Welcome Fred 8), to the best MK forum in the world :P
-
I have listened to this album every day, several times a day and, for me, it is the best MK solo album. It has even knocked my beloved "The Ragpicker's Dream" off the top spot! ;D
-
Yes, I didn't like Song For Sonny Liston, Marbletown and once I heard live I thought "Damn, I had too much cerumen in my ears when I listetened to the albums ???"
I think that Mark and the band will play these new songs a way that will make think the same again !
Darling pretty could have been in Get Lucky too !

welcome on board Fred !
My GL diagnostic :
One of the most melodic album that Mark ever done. it impressive how each album has its own sound, own coulors, this one is no exception to the rule.
My tribute to Glenn Worf, his bass playing is magnificent as usual !
Border Reiver : a song that makes you want to dance, perfect on stage. (bravo glenn)
Hard shoulder : realy the same atmosphere than "A place we used to leave", more melodic
you can't beat the house : the surprise of the album. never expect a real basic blues song.
Before gas & tv : celtic atmosphere, campfire legend, tales...
Monteleone : a marvel, how it waltz, sad and joyful at the same time
cleaning my gun : a good tempo, a surprise, country/rock, a mix between "Millionnaire blues" and "kingdom come"... a beautiful work between Danny and Glenn !
The xar was the one : another Hank influence, with beautiful melodies... as usual
Remembrance day : Realy happy to hear a composition as we love, Dire Straits time, with this beautiful chorus, when a saw the children's picture on Guy's forum, I thought first " oh non children shouting !", but I underestimated mark, they are just fabulous, the Les Paul is perfect, just enough.
Get lucky : Beautiful, a lovely walk
So far from the Clyde : sublime song, the story is beautiful, sad and always this attraction for sea and boats
Pipe to the end : A good ending song on stage, celtic and pure
-
Pipe to the end : A good ending song on stage, celtic and pure
Indeed. Am I the only one thinking that the last instrumental part of PTTE has very much of "Going Home" from the last tour? It would be surprising if
this song would NOT be played live as the last song.

I really hope you're right, LE. It would be the perfect ending to a concert! :D Border Reiver would be a great opener too! :)
-
Yeah, would be good, with Matt on accordian and John on fiddle.
Cleaning My Gun would be a great opener as well. :)
-
Hi everyone
For your curiosity, Fieneke, I'm French!
Now, I've listened to GL a few more times and I like it more and more.
I woke up this morning with So Far From the Clyde in my head....
I really love the guitar parts of You Can't Beat The House !
Remembrance Day and Get Lucky are very melodic, just beautiful...
I still don't really like Monteleone and Hard Shoulder who seems a little too slow...
For me, since the first DS album untill now, there are only 3 MK songs that I finally don't like : Heavy Fuel, No Can Do, Coyote.

Cleaning My Gun would be a great opener as well. :)
Everytime I hear those three "drum" shots in dialogue with MK
-
I have a feeling that more songs from "Get Lucky" will be played on this tour than were played from KTGC on the last tour. They just seem more suitable somehow! :)
-
Hi,
I agree with you, this album is more "public" or "singable", imagine after a break :
So far from the clyde : imagine the chorus sung by the entire audience, and then... drum roll, and a Gibson solo !
it would be great !
-
Oh yes, I can hear it, Kaleo74! I can't wait for the concerts now! :D
-
I tried and tried but in the end I couldn't wait.
Have literally just finished listening to Get Lucky for the first time. What can I say after one listen? Well nothing in great detail that's for sure - I just loved it from start to finish. I think us fans are the ones that Got Lucky! ;)
Border Reiver is a brilliant opener and the Albion links in my family make it an even more special song. Can't wait for my dad to hear it - he worked at the Albion all his working life. A real foot tapper and I hope it gets played at the Hurlingham on Weds and on tour.
Mark's voice! It just keeps improving. Really good throughout but I think you hear it at it's best on Hard Shoulder.
Again brilliant lyrics/storytelling. When that Clyde built ship is just an "oily stain on the sand" don't you just wonder about the depth of feeling someone must have to write like this? Moving and beautiful.
Remembrance Day and Piper to the End - brilliant songs! The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will hopefully see it's coffers full to overflowing as a result of Mark's charitable giving of the proceeds of these two songs to it.
Gonna top up my glass and listen again!
-
I tried and tried but in the end I couldn't wait.
& another one gone & another one gone ;D
-
you're a funny one Nat!
-
;D
thanks
I think the wait is part of the fun, I even went as far as to order my copy from the official site, knowing that it will take a couple of weeks from the 14th to reach me...
-
The wait is nearly over. 8 days to go. ;D
Cheers BBB

Actually, if you've ordered it online you'll probably get it by the weekend. I ordered mine on Play.com and payment's been taken and its now being 'packed' for delivery according to the status of the order.
I've ordered albums in advance before and often received them on the Saturday before the official Monday release date.
-
In France we're always late....
My deluxe box, ordered at amazon.fr will be dispatched monday and at home wednesday or thursday...
All the critics I read in France are negative, always comparing MK to DS, sayong it's not te same etc...
France loves DS and has no interest in MK. Only 4 shows for KTGC tour instead of 10 for Germany for example...
All they talk about is David Guetta and things like that, techno, house, rnb, ....
MK old fashioned.... for critics but not for many french people like me !
-
Well after a couple of listens i can quickly comment.
Firstly Border Reiver sounds much better off a CD than it does on Youtube!!! ;D
New albums are funny things and often the songs you love first, you get sick of quick and vice versa.
My highlight songs are Monteleone (Marks singing is really good in this one, with a pretty melody) and Hard Shoulder (which has a very similar feel to Stings Fields of Gold). You Can`t Beat The House is very new orleansy - love it!
My least favourite on first impressions is Gas & TV - singing is a bit warbly for me and those pipes just drag on at the end.
My wife and I both had a great laugh at the `truffle` lyric in Get Lucky. Overall its a pleasing album, i reckon! Well done Mark.
-
My favorites after listening a lot:
Number 7 to 11, the order changes every day :D
-
Remembrance Day is one of the most beautiful songs MK has ever written. I was blown away by it. I love the melody, really great chord progression there, and lyrics are very touching too. The children choir is icing on the cake. Brilliant song!
My other favourite tracks from the album are:
- Before Gas and TV - another gem! I know some people don't like Mark singing that way but I think it's great. Very touching again. And I can relate to this fantastic lyric too.
- So Far From The Clyde - again, touching and absolutely amazing track.
- Piper to th End - as above
- Get Lucky and Border Reiver - loved them from the first moment I heard them.
Well it's almost the whole album. I think the strings took some songs to another level. I'm really liking The Car Was The One, it could easily fit on KTGC which I enjoy very much.
All in all - fantastic, atmospheric album with some of the best MK work so far. Just my two cents.
-
:) ;) Interesting way that Mark has presented the album as a complete set of songs with no fade outs on the first 10 tracks (like K2GC) but PTTE concludes the whole album with a fade out.....Nice touch I thought. ;)

Yes, but the fade-out is badly done, i think. Just my opinion...

Love it! Love it! No skipper for me, quite interesting because KTGC had to grow but GL is love at first sight! (too many exclamation marks!)

This has the makings of another good album however I have noticed (after only playing it 3 times) some remarkable similarities with songs from KTGC and previous MK material. These are just observations and it is probably because I have played KTGC (one of my fav's) to death almost.
Border Riever - has an intro that reminds me of the live version intros for R+J.
Hard Shoulder - to me is very similar to The Scaffolders Wife
You Cant Beat The House - very NHB ish
Before Gas & Tv - The intro is like the theme from Local hero - very similar notes and then, to me, it sounds too much like The Fish and the Bird.
Monteleone - has an intro like something from last Exit and then becomes Heart Full of Holes - listen to the melody at 1minute 32 in. I can't differentiate it from HFOH.
The Car Was The One - this is very much like Fizzy And The Still.
So Far From the Clyde - Madame Genievas to me.
Please don't think I am knocking the album but like I said - there are some remarkable similarities that I can't help but hear when I play it.
-
I think these similarities are inevitable when you have such a rich back catalouge. When you think about it Lady Writer is similar to Sultans, Private Dancer has some very similar lines to Love Over Gold, What's the matter baby is again very similar to Sultans. We could probably find many similarities like that across MK's songbook. I consider them as a kind of an artist trademark rather than lack of ideas. I even think that the more he writes the more similarities we'll find. But it doesn't really bother me that much as long as he is able to touch me with his music. And so far he's been successful :)
-
Yes it struck me from the very first listening:
Piper to the End has an playing-out that could have come from "Going Home", at least it has the same feel and spirit. Hope they do it live. And while I still can
-
Intro of Piper to the end is almost the same as Wild Mountain Theme from A shot at glory ;)
But i's beautiful and i love this album! :D

Monteleone is one of my favourites too! It's a great album and even though I like all of the songs, there are some I like less than others, that one for me is "You Can't Beat the House", because I don't like the vocals much. The song is OK though and I love the guitar!
-
Remembrance day brought tears to my eyes earlier today! The voices of the kids and the guitar, plus thinking about all the people who die at war (all wars, not just that one), I shed a tear or two. And before you ask, yes, I was sober ;D

I too have listened about 3-4 times, and i couldn't agree more on ALL counts in regards to the similarities. ;)
Have to say, this sure is another amazing album. No skippers at all. ;D
Cheers BBB

funny! I heard a lot of similarities too, but not the same ones! I don't have them all in mind, but Get lucky: my claim to fame and another one (can't remember which one though) reminded me of Pyroman.Next time I'll listen I'll take notes!
-
Well it would be strange if these songs were not similar to anything else from the past, wouldn't it? They were written by the same genious mind! :)
Still it would be a funny place if we all liked the same things. I think The Car Was the One is a weak track because the lyrics and music don't seem a great marriage in my opinion and it starts very much in the vein of The Fizzy and the Still. Still, it's a great album and finishes especially strongly with the last four songs being stand outs.
Agreed! Except for The Car Was The One - I really like this track. I think it has a great atmosphere and strings really took this song to another level. This is the only track on the album that has a National on it, or am I wrong?
I think this song isn't only about the guy who desperately wanted a Cobra ;) but about anybody who really wants something badly in life (like Mark wanted his first guitar so desperately or later, how he wanted to be successful). Great little story, and music suits there just fine imo.
-
Get the album and read the liner notes. There Mark tells us what the song is about. ;D

"It's about a young person's desire to follow his compulsion" - from the liner notes.
That's exactly what I meant. This song has a similar message to Let It All Go. To me anyway.
And what made you think I did not get the album? ;)
-
Oh, I just thought you asked about the intension of the song, which you wouldn

I guess we all know Mark in our own little ways and can tease out similarities that no one else hears. This isn't a fault but an example of how diverse we all are and how he reaches out to us in different ways.
Does So Far From The Clyde remind anyone of Single Handed Sailor?
-
I guess MK is at a certain place in his melody making. In art and music, the artists go through a 'period' or 'theme' where the work seems to have a connection, a commonality among the individual pieces. If you look at a sculptor's or painter's body of work encompassing a short span of dates, you'll see the similarities. I think that anytime a singer/songwriter, symphony composer etc and etc and etc create something, the work before and the work after are going to be closely related. When I listen to music by other artists, the individual pieces seem alike to me also. To stretch it much further, when one is not familiar with a genre, like country or 80s pop, it all sounds the same to him. Only when the music is heard again and again do the individualities appear.
So, I don't know what that spiel of mine above has to do with anything, since we all listen to MK a lot! ;D

Thanks Marie - for putting into words exactly what I have been trying to say to family and friends about my love of Mark's music. As fans, we get a lot more out of it. We hear things in a different way and it appeals to a deeper part of our soul than the casual listener. I also have theory that some of his music appeals to a lot of people with sensitive caring personalities. :)

Remember that MK intentionally makes songs with double or tripple or fripple meanings (I dont think Old Pigweed is about cooking, for instance, even though he's told that the idea came when he started making stews and such after having invested in some cook books).
-
Exactly, and that's what makes him such a great songwriter. He's able to tell a story in a very short form (a song)
and make it such way that very often there are more than just one obvious meaning.

Fieneke, You mentioned that "Monteleone" reminded you of Mantovani. When I was about 11 years old Mantovani was my hero. Yes, I know that sounds strange for someone of 11 years, but I loved his music and in particular a melody called "The Lonely Ballerina". My best friend requested it for me on the radio and also bought me the record for my 12th birthday. My friend died a few years ago, but I still have the record, although I cannot play it, because I don't have the right sort of player! Your mentioning Mantovani, brought back some memories! :) I am glad you are enjoying Mark's beautiful album! :D
-
I was young too when when I got the album from my sister. She didn't like the music anymore and after paying a little amount I could have it! ;D The music is beautiful and quiet, so I often listened while I was studying in the evening.
Yeahhh I really love Get Lucky! It's calm and relaxed music I can use when I am tired after a stressful day at work! ;)
-
I love you guys!!! ;D
