I sincerely hope it isn't underwhelming but I won't hold my breath. Excitement still building though for all sorts of reasons. Can't wait until the first videos appear on YouTube either and we get a little teaser.

really really excited about tomorrow will be there with you guys

I bet this thread will have more than 100 pages. See you all that are comming tomorrow to Barcelona!!

Concrete hell.
It's a damn shame they have to play these awful, cavernous multi-purpose arenas and not proper concert halls :(
-
It's the cheapest place in town to book as nothing happens there besides concerts or other shows. Not any team of whatever sport plays there, at all.

Weird. For sure it wasn't designed to be a concert hall.

It was designed to host the Barcelona Olympic games, the basketball games and some others.

Right.
Obviously they do it to sell enough tickets to cover the touring costs. But sonically it's a disaster.

When I was in Barcelona years ago I walked all the way up there just to see the venue where DS played (nutter :lol). It's not such a bad place really. Isn't there a stadium next door too? I seem to recall the doors were open and I had a peek inside. Apart from that there's nothing much up there from what I recall apart from views over the city.
Apparently the tenants are FC Barcelona. Wonder if Messi will be at the concert...
-
The stadium next the Sant Jordi is the Olympic stadium, and nobody plays there. While th RCD Espanyol football team was building their new stadium they played their home games there, but since they moved to their new stadium, nobody plays there, besides some American football games from time to time and big concerts like U2, Bruce Springsteen, acdc etc
Palau Sant Jordi is a tricky place because of the acoustics. I attended there many concerts and they usually sounds well. I saw MK there I think two times with the stage at the middle of the arena and the sound wasn't bad considering half venue was empty behind the stage and the sound was being loose through the Dome...
-
I don't know if we should take it with a grain of salt, but Mikel Camps is saying, on the Spanish City group on FB, that tomorrow will be a huge surprise.

Of course this is the venue that hosted the last ever performance of TOL on 2nd October 1992. Wouldn't it be appropriate if it was relaunched there...

Have a great time tonight!
I wonder what the band are doing today - must be a slightly odd day, probably a few nerves...
Once the tour is underway it’s a lot easier to relax (plus there’s travelling to fit in) but today... off to the gym maybe, nice coffee and read the paper?
Probably a sound check at 6pm but that’s still a few hours to kill beforehand...
-
Been watching Sly News and there are reports of an invasion in Barcelona. A group known as AMITers have taken over the city and are lording it! ;D
I'm feeling the excitement from here folks. Have a fantastic time. :wave

Enjoy you all tonight!

Have fun and enjoy everybody!! :)

-
To be honest I wish he'd leave YLT; it's never worked live. Studio version is a million times better than any live one.
Quite happy to have Bonaparte back. It's a good song.
Interesting to have OES, SAN and TR.
Some nice surprises here but which ones are going to be dropped. I hope it isn't Sultans. SFA for MFN and Privateering for Silvertown would do nicely!

Maybe Marbletown will be dropped? Not sure, it still fits good as most of the musicians have their moment in that one...
Always more difficult for each new album, with the same no. of songs in the setlist, which ones are to be dropped... 2hrs left!!!

Oh cool! So exited! MFN back!! :clap That I never guessed that would ever be back! Never heard MFN live so hope it stays in the set ;D. Silvertown blues as wel 8) ;D.
Bonepart, Telegraph, Speedway cool 8). Heart full of holes is also a nice suprise. YLT I dont car for as much, but its okey. Postcards can be replaced, heard it enough. But overal it sound like it is going to be a cool setlist. Can’t wait to hear what they played tonight :clap
-
Makes me want to jump on a flight right now!

I wonder how many songs from his new album will make it to the setlist..
And what about Silvertown as opener :think

Could the many DS songs indicate that this is indeed the last big tour? At any rate, I really hope they do play some of the old DS songs. They really need to be brought back to life. By the man himself. This is exciting.

yes, Mark had talk about the chance that THIS is the Last Big tour.
For this reason is probably a set list full of surprises, it was certainly not safe given that in the past the set lists were static.
what say----Go Mark----Go my friend----- :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

If OUATITW is really played, it seems like MK is doing at least one from every album for this show, that'd be quite something...
Final prediction ( :p ) OUATITW / Trapper / Why Aye / Dancefloor / Silvertown / I Used to Could / She's Gone and YLT / Romeo / Sultans / Bonaparte / Heart Full of Holes / One Song at a Time / Postcards / OES / SAN / TR
Encore of Matchstick MFN and GH?
Can't seem to fit in songs from GL and Tracker though

As suspected..but still getting it confirmed..

That’s some sad news anyway, although we expected it more or less... Anyway, glad I bought tickets for this tour. Maybe we’ll enjoy some more studio recordings in the future!

-
Let’s hope OUATITW survives the rest of the tour... ;D

Thankyou very much.... :wave
-
I want HFB in the list, please don't tell me it's skipped. Usually was around song 4-5 :(
I think it is skipped although i would replace it for CBC
-
Pretty soon Mark will realize the reaction from this setlist and that this tour will be so much more fun than the prevoius that it won't be the last. Just wait and see! Could be the big tours will be finished but he will tour maybe just 10-20 concerts like all the other senior artists.
-
That's not his sig Strat on Romeo outro, is it? No Sultans then.
-
Btw I got a chance to listen to the new JJ Cale album. Don't miss out on it. So many tunes that are way better than his last few albums!

Gave to admit it’s not one of my favourites but then neither was HFB or Marbletown until I heard them live👍
good old Waterline man in the house! you gonna be at RAH son?
Well I thank you mr pottel for the welcome. I’m afraid Dublin will be my only concert this year with my two oldest, who are finally getting to see what it’s all about. Dusty had generously offered me a RAH ticket but I’d have to take the week off to get the two concerts in 😪😪
-
can't stand bonaparte I am getting it since Antibes in 1996
Me neither......

Glasses back I see. Also, don't you think "Old Grandad" is singing well?

No back on the dancefloor or Trapper man so far :think

Surprise of the day for me! One of the best songs his solo career :clap
-
If no HFB or OSAAT I am disappointed. So much better than bacon and heart holes .. :think
-
seems a pretty calm 75% first part of the concert and fireworks at the end ? speedway money telegraph sultans ?
-
If no HFB or OSAAT I am disappointed. So much better than bacon and heart holes .. :think
I think HFB has had it's run personally. OSAAT on the other hand... Not totally convinced by Nobody Does That.

Hi guys! Some great songs here! Once Upon and Heart Full Of Holes

I agree about HFB. It wasn't sounding great on the last couple of tours.
-
heart full of holes is an amazing song---deserved to be played live-------only for hard fans :P :P
-
No offence on Graeme/Tom but feels the setlist is made a lot to fit their instruments. Was afraid of this ..
Now give us some goodies!

YLT
-
guys, let's not forget that new songs might come out next shows and not tonight

I'm old man. No more traveling for me"
I do not want to believe it...

İs there some info about the arangement OUATİTW? 4 piece band or...

OSAAT in the encore? Maybe... Desperately hoping!

No offence on Graeme/Tom but feels the setlist is made a lot to fit their instruments. Was afraid of this ..
They made some fine new arrangements to certains songs to be honest

Indeed much better (fitting to MK's music than) Nige.

Waited 19 years to hear this.
-
Only three regulars from the previous tours, two non-DTRW live debuts, OUATITW and the return of Why Aye Man and Sailing. What a night.
-
After this one TR or OES/Speedway :think
Or after Silvertown which sounds great by the way!!!!

This is immense. 8)

Yes, I like the altered arrangement with trumpet and piano. Gives it a very Cuban theme! Need...cigar...now!

MFN and Going home for the encores i think.
I have a feeling Sultans is out.

So how many songs left? 3-4?
Still no Trapper, OSAAT, for example... :'(

No Dance Floor! ???

didn't Guy have to leave the band without Dancefloor ?

No Marbletown :clap

TR

16. TR
-
MY LOVED TELEGRAPH :thumbsup
-
:thumbsup :thumbsup
-
Think he's really struggling to play fast now. The trumpet in Speedway took away the speedy build-up part. First time it really spoiled a tune for me.
TR will be interesting...
-
Yes Telegraph... :thumbsup
-
After this one he is 2 hours on the stage and then we will have the encores.
-
Karaoke first TR part
-
Which Pensa ?
-
I think the performance has been sublime regardless of fast solos or not. Much better performance and more well put together show than beginning of the last tour. They have worked way harder this time around.
-
Still i find the choises he made for songs from his new album not the best ones
-
GREAT SOLO :o :o :o :o
-
Still i find the choises he made for songs from his new album not the best ones

OSAAT should have replaced Bacon, can't believe they dropped it ...

encores money for nothing + OSaat ? that would be fine
-
I think the performance has been sublime regardless of fast solos or not. Much better performance and more well put together show than beginning of the last tour. They have worked way harder this time around.
Agree. A lot of thought has been put into the arrangements and not just cobbled together auto-pilot from last tour.
-
Still i find the choises he made for songs from his new album not the best ones

Overall a GREAT concert. I guess they might be working on Dancefloor and Trapper. I can't see Corned Beef staying permanently for the whole tour... Some songs might have been short but I think its fine they get a bit more stuff in. They still perfomed 2.30 hours!
-
GH

Also no bandintroductions
Maybe just forgot because it's the first night. He's always introduced the band.

Totally agree. I also think Nobody Does That didn't really work and Matchstick is a waste of time, although I reckon I'm in a minority. He has a habit of choosing the wrong songs from new albums.
-
I’d rather go for OUATITW and Silvertown instead of Sultans... :think ;D
-
Perhaps Kitty will tell him, to play the twiddly bits again.

Going Home final?

Fantastic concert!
-
A female vocalist is on Trapper and Dancefloor. Could it be a female vocalists joins later during the tour and then they will do those songs then? I vaguely remember they did something like that in the past during a tour. That after a musician joined the band they started playing other songs.
-
Maybe with all of the soundcheck songs not played, MK will "do a Bruce" and mix it up each night? (ok that's a major shift in the MK touring mindset), but some "interesting" choices were made especially to showcase DTRW album. Your kind of left thinking a great concert....great songs...but then also left scratching your head as the obvious (and arguably better) choices were left out?! You really wonder what goes on in MK's head when it comes to set-lists!!
-
Has the concert finished yet???

The RAH gigs specifically mentions guest stars! And Imelda is doing something early May but probably free later in the month...

Thanks for the video of OUATITW - absolutely amazing arrangement....
Just one of the many highlights. Bravo to Mark and the band for this. I am disappointed not hearing Sultans and OSAAT, however this is just one concert. The show did have minimal guitar but it's great to have him back and if we can have great refreshing songs like this then I'm happy and the audience sounded pretty happy too.
-
Incredible setlist, I’d say the best in many many years. Can’t believed he played OUATITW, HFOH and Silvertown :clap

The show did have minimal guitar but it's great to have him back and if we can have great refreshing songs like this then I'm happy and the audience sounded pretty happy too.
Judging from the video, MK isn't moving about the stage very well....he does look old....
-
Something I have noticed is the sound is much better than last tour. All the instruments are very clear and well mixed and Mark's guitar's sound great. The light show looks fab as well.
@Knopflerfan: Yes, he does appear somewhat restricted. I hope his back is okay.
OES video is out now and probably more to come on YT.

A GREAT SHOW
a set list different, and will change I'm sure, too song left out tonight, like Blood or OSATT or SOS or Brothers In Arms and others :think
Memorable for me Once upon a time in the west :o :o :o-----
why aye man :P :P :P-----
silvertown :D :D :D-----
TELEGRAPH 8) 8) 8) 8)---------
Speedway :thumbsup :thumbsup------
MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY----repeat ---Back again because for long long time destroyed by TributeBand ;D ;D
PHILADEPHIA WOWWWWW--- :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap
OK for the ROLL :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup------ and sure HEART FULL OF HOLES --VERY NICE
NO for Nobody & Corned
MARK KNOPFLER YOU'RE THE MAN :clap :clap :clap 8) 8)
I totaly agree with you on this. Corned was okay but he could have left that one out. Replace it for Trapper man. Second song Nobody does that was really a bad choice after a great new WAM!
-
Has the concert finished yet???
Yes it has finished. I recorded the live-stream audio, some minor lag in some places though. Will see if it's of any use.
A live recording, besides the official recording will follow.

Silvertown Blues should have been an obvious choice for inclusion into the set list about 5 tours ago!
-
Can't quite believe what I've seen tonight...am sad he is saying goodbye, was in floods of tears during match stick man...what a performance of that song..
He gave absolutely everything and is still showing huge ambition in his shows ...Silvertown and hear full of holes require so much concentration...
What a guy!!
-
Will write more in time but now by bed beckons..
-
Because of the hornsection and Danny on percussion new arrangements were made for older songs that were already in the set and also “new” songs like Silvertown have finally made it to the setlist......
-
BTW 288 people online yesterday, biggest number so far!

Wow. What a concert. So many suprises and also powerful versions of wam, oustitw, Silvertown(outstanding) and Tr. Nice that mnf is back (with cool retro intro) and my bacon roll works also great.
It was also great to meet the amit-people. Thanks for the warm welcome! Unfortunately I have lost you when exiting.
Maybe we will meet or see at RAH😀
Keep on knopflering! 🎸👍🏻

What an unbelievable setlist.
Hey - how's the merch? Cool shirt this tour? They have another signed guitar poster?

So, just to make sure I understand:
MK forgot to play the two singles from his new album?
He forgot to play SULTANS??
He forgot to introduce the band???
Guy said there's be surprises and he was right!

Theirs too many band members to introduce this tour.

oh man, i'd even buy a ticket for Once Upon A Time In The West alone!

It was amazing! :D

Wonderful start. Mark's pretty on fire, though a little rusty on the guitar. Looking forward to hearing clips ten or fifteen shows into the tour.

I bet that "Ride across the river" will be part of this tour, must be with all the horn section and this gorgeous Gibson sound, fingers crossed.

Thank you all for keeping us updated! Exciting and quite emotional to read these messages.

How are we on a livestream btw?
“It has come to our attention that there are unauthorized live-streaming sites advertising Mark’s upcoming concerts as available for viewing. The authenticity of these sites is highly questionable, as no such services have been authorized or endorsed by management, promoters and venues. Interesting, is the Management a reader of this Forum?
I think these streams are fake. Youtube is full of these during sport events.

Hopefully not! Perhaps the Gibson, is more comfortable for him to play? Time will tell...

Altough I feel some kind of sadness coming up knowing that this might as well be the last tour, I still get extremely joyful listeningen to these clips! And it will most likely get even better as the tour progress.
What a version of Once Upon a Time! That song has never been a favorite of mine, but in this occasion it sounds fresh. And the Les Paul does it job here.
The full intro (and outro) version of MFN is great, and maybe the ultimate clue that this actually IS the final tour. ::)
Best sounding Going Home since ever?

I thought the whole band looked rather "stiff", but I think all this will change once the ball gets rolling properly.

What a night!! really blessed to be there! Yes indeed I remember the outro was as usual with Red Strat.
-
Yes, and then he switched to blue Pensa for My Bacon Roll
-
What a night ! I'm still shocked.
I was as if Mark had read this forum, and wanted to send us a message: ok, you think I'm too static, playing the same thing over and over ? Let's see then.
Although I know OUATITW by heart, it took me a lot of seconds to actually name it - my brain had a failure and just could not connect what it was hearing with what I knew.
I was so happy to hear WAM as an opener - and what a version ! Selfishly it is also because I never had the chance to hear it live - Now it's done in the best way :)
Hearing Silvertown and MFN (with fantastic old intro ! ) were also shocking experiences, in the best of ways. I thought TR would be dropped, but no ! It was in a such a dream state when it came, that I thought that the "karaoke mode" might be dropped and the first guitar solo would be resurrected ! Alas no, but never mind.
Almost everything has been rearranged with the new musicians. This last solo your has a bit of a feel of the last DS tour: crowded stage, and every musician has a chance to shine... Negative people will say that Mark is trying to burry the (lack of) guitar under sax and trumpet, but who cares, the result is a fantastic new sound !
I was moved to tears. Never seen Mark so chatty. Lame humour was dropped in favor of self-deprecating farewell talk ("I'm an older man"..."grandpa needs to go to bed"..."it is not only hello Barcelona but also good bye Barcelona"... Strangely, no band introductions. To save every bit of time for music ? The show lasted an incredible 2.5 hours, unseen since 1996 !
Songs like Heart full of Holes and Machstick man were taken a whole new level compare to the album, with majesty and sounding like personal confessions. Even the Spanish crowd, that was a bit disrespectful at times (wisteling during STP for instance) was dead silent during these intimate moments.
Too bad we didn't get One Song At a Time as a closer - this would have been perfect. As usual, Mark didn't do complete justice to the new album. One Bacon Roll was fabulous, and why choose "Nobody does that ?" Nobody does that but you, Mark ! Never mind :)
But it was so good, then why stop, then ? Well, don't you think it is better to leave on a high than on a low ? I just hope he can finish this tour as well as he started it. I was very close to the stage and I could clearly see him shaking, struggling to focus with intense concentration. He his pushing himself to his current limits. Thanks for that Grandpa - we love you so much !
-
What a great read herlock, thanks for that! I'm glad to hear that you had a great time.
-
Thank you Herlock for your great review. I must admit that, even though it was expected, I was very sad to hear last night that "this is goodbye". I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed the show so much and I am now looking forward to my turn. :)

I said at the time it wasn't the Strat - it sounded different. I knew instantly we weren't getting Sultans from that point. Funny because he could already change over to the blue Pensa and play the outro, then into Bacon Roll surely?
@ Herlock: Thanks for your interesting review. Some good stuff in there.

Listening to a clip of My Bacon Roll on YouTube now. At one point they stop playing and the whole band and audience sing "Have you got my roll, my roll ... My bacon roll". Ha-ha! Who'd have thought you'd hear THAT line at a rock concert! Sounds great by the way.

It's the Skydiver of this tour, but so much better don't you think?

On a different topic, I was feeling a little sorry for the folkies last night. No laughing at the back. Here is this new brass section coming in and having their influence on most of the songs and the folkies have been pushed to the side with songs like Haul Away, Privateering and Marbletown axed and the guys being forced to play tambourines. I wonder what they're thinking and if musicians of their calibre were really needed on this tour.

Yes, I wondered if they were surplus to requirements this time, but maybe their turn will come at other concerts in the tour. :think

Nearly 2.5hrs is amazing. Let's see if most concerts will have 2+ hrs of playing...
I hope each concert has an average of 17-18 songs rather 14 which several concerts had last tour.

Sound all really promising!! Can’t wait until the 22th of june (omg so far away!! :smack), that is going to be my first concert from this tour.
Thanks everybody for the cool updates and reviews, it is really cool to read :clap
-
Watching the video clips on YT over and over I can definitely see room for development and improvisation and also that he is rusty and struggling playing anything nearly speedy now. When this tour is up and going it promises to be really something though because the songs, arrangements and the sound are fantastic! OES was played far better than anything last tour simply due to the guitar sound being thicker.
What happens in the next few concerts in terms of setlist will tell us a lot about how the tour will pan out. Hopefully OSAAT will find it's way into it.
-
Oh what a fantastic tour beginning, what a thrill!! It was awesome, and how good He and They sounded... the setlist was a killer, though for myself I would make a couple of necessary improvements:
Corned Beef City => Trapper Man
My Bacon Roll => One Song At A Time
Even so:
Done With Bonaparte => Portobello
Speedway At Nazareth => Sultans
Let's see how it evolves and if we get some further surprises! Enjoy the Tour friends ;-)

Thank you to all who helped me wear out my refresh button while I was at work last night :-) As always, amiters are the best. I am completely blown away at OUATITW and Silvertown's addition to the set list. I have dreamt of Silvertown since the very first time I heard it. When STP was released, it was my first real MK exposure when I was in grade school. I bought it because of the album cover. Still remains my favorite album of all time. Ill never forget my dad, who was overly critical of any new music I brought into the house, snatching it from my hand, saying "Oh, thats ok then, Mark Knopfler was in Dire Straits". 19 years, 20 something guitars, too many shows to count, and a lot of great friends later, the rest is history.....
Sorry, I digress...

Agree regarding Nobody Does That - nobody should've done that! Although I'd love to hear One Song, Bacon Roll was very nice so rather at the expense of another song. Don't understand the liking of Matchstick Man. Could omit that altogether as far as I'm concerned. Why play Privateering when he has Sky and Water, the new sea shanty? BIA has had it's day - OES was performed better last night than any version in 2015 without doubt. As I said way back in 2015 his guitar needed a thicker sound and now we have it. We're really being picky though because it's a great set that works well.

No, I wasn't there. That buddy over there sent a few voice recordings. And that's the result I get from all those hd videos. In 2011, he was much braver. Of course, being there is something else. Those who are there can interpret better. What do you think?

all these things are perfect, but i didn't like ianto's drum work this time. Sounds dull, thin, empty to me.

He made quite a lot of new arrangements. I also think he has a different kit with different sound. I'll have to listen back recordings from tours before to really say something about it. I agree it sounds different to before. The snare sounds a little bit thinner than previous I heard, I quite like his sound nowadays but the drum department will always be a matter of personal taste!

Of course it is. Isn't everything subjective about art?

Julien Flamand has added some too, including Heart Full... Difficult to make out on the video but there was quite a lot of different brass instruments used on it including what looked like a coaching horn! Couldn't be, they're usually copper.
I liked Heart Full very much, but the audience response was rather quiet, I thought. I hope Poupystar has recorded it for a better picture and sound.

I thought that too. Perhaps not many actually knew of the song with it being previously unplayed and from an older album? Perhaps one they may alternate or even drop.

What a beautiful finale for this song, very powerful

To be fair on NDT they messed it up a bit on the first night and didn't do it justice. It could evolve into something much better.

Marks speech, i wrote it down from an audience recording, pretty accurate (not 100%)
Alright Barcelona - happy or great to see you again
yeah, it's been a long time now
i always loved to be in Barcelona
so, once again is, hello Barcelona
but now, i am an oooold man, you know
so, i wanna thank you Barcelona for all the many happy years of me coming to say hello
it is also goodbye Barcelona for me, i am very sad
so hello Barcelona, dear Barcelona, i love Barcelona
but i will still try to make some records and write songs, but has to be no more travelling for old granddad, nevermind
-
I was happy to attend the opening night and remain unspoiled about the surprises.
-
it is also goodbye Barcelona for me, i am very sad
Thank you
This is the part that really struck me because I really felt like a closed door, that he was meaning "this a goodbye and I won't come back here".
But maybe I am a over interpreting?
-
I think that's what he said yes. Last time Barcelona.

you can't listen something with a crap sound quality like that one, I have a basically perfect audience recording, outstanding playing,
the only problem is that it's a short final solo
-
I think he has some kind of injury, the angle of the guitars he is holding and the strap seems shorter which is making the guitar higher up and making it look awkward. I could be wrong but something doesn't seem right about it.

there's zero struggling infact, you have no idea what you are talking about, if you listen to a crap recording you don't get what's really happening, even if you have a very trained ear, that recording is just unlistenable, same for the valencia one
-
I agree with that, I have watched an audience shot performance where the visuals are good but the sound not so good, but then listened to the official download version, and the sound and playing are incredible. I still think he has an injury though, he is not moving when playing solo's, which is unusual for him.

erm, its most certainly the back playing up, His movements aren't good. Mind you his stomach does act as a good wedge for the guitar....

Again the back seems the issue and I am wondering some sort of Arthritis?? He is somewhat 'Rooted to the spot'

People, calm down. If we would be able to find out a diagnosis based on (amateur) video recordings, we’d be a club of the finest doctors in the world. Take it easy, everything’s all right. He is a little older, has decided to go for a less stressful musician life by skipping future tours. Who knows why he’s not moving around like hell on stage. Maybe some new amps, in ear monitors that require some attention in finetuning. Got the impression that within a week, some speculations about a funeral pop up... ::) :hmm
Just relax and enjoy this tour! 8)
-
indeed, relax, enjoy the tour as it goes on, it WILL be the last one.
and yes, who knows, maybe it is not him becoming an older man, but rather an arthritis problem in his fingers.
e.g.
who knows.
but whatever, no bitching to one and other pls.

Whatever the merit of judging these performances there's no doubt that the tempo of TR was subtly altered some time ago to aid mark a little. Plenty of little 'greenies' in both performances, but also plenty of effort and still some good little fluid passages.
Gives us mere mortals some hope ;)

Yes Agree 100% pottel! We need to just give the man our full support/admiration for the decades of enjoyment he has given to us all! Be thankful he still writes, records and performs but now now constrained by failing physical adroitness.
As a person with arthritis, in almost every joint of my body, I can totally empathize with Mark if his does have it! His early years as a Hill Farmer, exposed to all weathers and a motorbike accident, must have had some impact on his body, so let's just be REAL happy that he can still lift a guitar let alone do all these concerts for us fans.
-
WAM is arranged nicely! I reallly hope that Mark feels comfortable enough to strat with it so we will hear it again.

Yes, speed is the only thing that has suffered (quite big time) for the last 15 years, especially since he was so fast previously.
Gilmour for example has not suffered much on the speed side cause pink floyd songs have always been pretty slow since the very beginning, contrarily to dire straits songs.
Regarding all the rest, touch, inspiration, is beyond imagination,
for example Telegraph Road final solo from 1992 was much faster than now obviously, but he is struggling now ?
I don't think so, actually the Barcelona final solo from this tour imo is much more enjoyable overall to me than the much faster ones.

Hahaha, I did chuckle at Mr Bennetts early wake up!!!!

To see Mark playing STP and DWB seems much more right and better than Skydiver or Broken Bones. It's a lovely feeling of homecoming and satisfaction. The new arrangement of Matchstick Man is really beautiful and My Beacon Roll is pretty good in the second half.
As much as I like the album version of Nobody Does That, I agree that it isn't working live (yet), mainly because Mark just mumbles and is hardly understandable. The relaxed feel of OUATITW is absolutely gorgeous. Plus he plays some very signature style licks on that one.
Silvertown Blues needs some more runnings to be really great. On Every Street doesn't do it for me live as it already didn't in 2015 with this band as it so much needs Paul Franklin. Otherwise I do not really miss anything. Maybe Father and Son, but certainly not HFB or Sultans which had their time and were not given justice anymore in 2015. Good to skip them now.
Just some thoughts.

great set list just a shame there isn't more from the new album on it.Maybe it will come as they have a chance to practice a bit more.Wonder if they will change it up more than ever as it seems to be the last time around.

No. But I will have a look if the set really is set in stone or if there are any surprises possible.

The new tour HAD to have a good shake up of the set list. It was necessary and really important. They could have messed up that but I admit that this one really works well and is under the special circumstances a really good and satisfying one. If the soundboard recordings are done better and not in such a disastrous way than 2015 it would be perfect and worth a farewell tour. Maybe they learned and take their time to do it better, regarding the three weeks delivery time.

I think the real issue is one of timing. As you and I know Knopfler/Fingerstyle guitar is very precise and demanding, the slightest of errors can leave you looking a bit silly. That's what I've sensed from much of marks recent playing. It will be interesting to see what happens during the rest of the tour because it could just be 'rust' rather than age that we're picking up on.
Whatever, he's still great, and I owe him a huge thankyou for making me want to play and teach.

Also note that on TR, for instance, he uses a much more overdriven guitar sound than previously. That makes things sound much more fluid and covers up moments of "imprecision". Same with Once Upon A Time.
Some may call it cheating, but I actually admire Mark for adjusting to reality and being able to make things work nonetheless. It would not work on Sultans, I think. It has and requires too many "twiddly bits" to be a proper version, and with a distorted sound it would sounds mushy.

I think the other thing we're forgetting is that in 'the day' 99% of marks solos were religiously practiced and drilled. In his solo career he has drifted away from this approach and likes to improvise more. This also probably accounts for the odd 'fall from the tightrope'...

Good point. Which is why everything seemed so effortless before. To make the improvisation approach work and not turn into a mess, you really need to be on your toes and have a huge vocabulary at the ready.

I am currently listening to Sultans of Swing from Alchemy, and it FANTASTIC, Mark won't get back to that level again, but then again, he doesn't want to, he has evolved as a player and musician, which is something a lot of his contemporaries don't do. No matter how Mark plays, I would be happy at this concert, there is no other guitar player out there who does it for me like Mark Knopfler does. Like has been mentioned, his guitar playing is unique, his tone is wonderful, and the emotion he gets from the guitar is incredible, they are the things he has above any other guitarist I can think of. Legend.
-
There is no doubt MK is 'The Master' .....
-
I just watched Once Upon a Time in the West from this show on youtube and I gotta say it's disappointing. One of my favorite songs, seeing it on the setlist really got me excited. I hope he gets it sounding a bit more exciting by the time he rolls around to Milwaukee and Chicago.
-
I find it hard to be "dissapointed" by Once Upon a Time in the West" however he plays it. The fact he brought back such a huge song, and fan favourite from album 40 years ago is an amazing thing. Good on you son.
-
I'm overwhelmed by being able to hear it live again after all these years. It could do with a slightly faster tempo, but the overall arrangement is wonderful.
-
I'm really enjoying OUATITW very much, but I just wish he would yell out the Mother Mary line like he did on Alchemy! It's only because I'm used to hearing it like that I suppose. ;)
