Title: STP RECORD: 29 songs written, 25 songs being considered
Post by: Jules on September 16, 2019, 09:52:59 AM
Last weekend I found some stuff in boxes, one of them, a print of the MKNEWS website from March 6th 2000 regarding the record "Sailing to Philadelphia". I took a picture of it.

It says that 29 songs were written and of them, 25 songs were considered for it.

Obviuously we know some of them were released, and we know thanks to ISWN-NET some unreleased titles, so I´m gonna guess:

At that time Ed was still manager and I believe usually had a say in what went on the album.  You could always rely on a good album with Mark's trademarks stamped all over it when Ed was at the helm.  More recent albums haven't utilised his attributes to the full.  I would conclude that these songs aren't as good as the ones on the album, unlike the ones cut from DtRW final release.

I found some more info using wayback machine and searching the old MKNEWS site, and some of the different reports says that some of that songs were too country and MK had left them out, maybe covered by other artists...

This year marks 20th anniversary of the STP release, a special 20th years edition with some of that unreleased songs would be so great!

At that time there was already the plan to record with Emmylou and some songs were considered to be put on a possible blues album with, if I recall correctly, Brendan Croker. I have had the privilege to hear the 25 songs in the format as they were recorded for STP, but since I didn't know the titles back then, I can only confirm that Red Staggerwing and Donkeytown were part of the 25. I'm quite sure I heard Bonafide, but nor sure about the rest.

When did you hear them and in what circumstances. Write something more.

Very interesting story. I remember listening years ago about that tape with 25 songs being distributed to MK closest friends and colleagues to help him choose which ones were better for the album.

I'm not sure if that's true or not.
