Title: and it's your face I'm looking for...
Post by: Rollergirl on August 31, 2009, 08:42:55 AM
To celebrate Get Lucky (and to help me wait for it), I was going through my MK/DS collection in reversed chronological order and I got stuck round about the middle. I rediscovered

I'm doing something very similar. Listening to mainly Mark's soundtracks, solo & bootlegs from the KTGC tour, just to get me through.
2 weeks to go, but my god, it's dragging like hell.
I've even made myself the equivalent to a Xmas advent calender. For the last 2 weeks i have been crossing off the days with a marker pen, until Xmas day (Sept 14th) ;D (pathetic i know)
I'm hoping the last 2 weeks will go quickly now, because i'm off to see Pick Withers this week, Mark next week, then the new album. Plenty to keep my mind occupied. :)

Cheers   BBB

Yeah, when I was a kid I had Brothers in Arms and the Money for Nothing compilations on tape, but to be honest I only really ever listened to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life.

I was 13 I think when Calling Elvis came out and I loved it. Went and bought OES and gradually got more and more obsessed.

It has always had a special place in my heart, as it was the first album which was released after I fell in love with MK

I've always loved Ticket to Heaven, but I think My Parties is the weak point of the album and should have been left off.

It's a "jokey" song, would have been OK as a b-side like Millionaire Blues or Kingdom Come, but not worthy of inclusion on the album. They should have recorded Long Highway instead.

I love OES but "My Parties" is definitely not one of my favourites.   I love "Ticket to Heaven" and "How Long" especially, because I was at the 1993 Charity show with Steve and Brendan at the T & C in Leeds, where he sang both of those songs - perhaps the only time live?   :)

OES is one of my fav. albums ever...don't know why. May be it was because I was waiting it so long after BIA, or may be because of my fav song ever 'You and Your Friend'...Great album!!

And I remember when I first heard "Calling Elvis" on the radio -

I was on a train, fibbling around on my portable radio, only to hear the DJ say "and that was the new Dire Straits single". arrrghhhh I had missed it.

Sure it's great that we are able to hear the new album before if we choose too, but those days had something special too, the waiting, the agony of it sometimes, the constant search for information in the papers, on the radio on the telly. Now we know exactly where the info is. I sometimes miss those days (and not just because I was 20 years younger  ;D)

Yeah, I think it was better that way, lots of fun. But the new era has lots of advantages as well, great to be able to go online and just download one song you really like instead of having to buy a whole album full of other stuff that you might not listen to.

And of course things are MUCH better for bootlegs now, can't believe we used to have to pay rip off prices for this stuff.

OES is probably an under rated album. I like it very much.

I was on hollydays in Scotland when the CE single was out in August and could not wait to be back home so I bought the 2 tracks K7 to listen to in my walkman  ;D

The bad side is that I left England the day before the band played so I never managed to hear the live version of "Planet Of New Orleans" being only able to attend 92 shows, actualy the first one it was dropped of the setlist -  no luck :'(

not really that underated... I mean it spawned some amazing songs i.e Calling Elvis, You And Your Friend, On Every Street and Fade to Black ( I Love My Parties, incidentally!  ;D).

Lets not forget it sold around 10 million copies too!!!! 8)
