Mark has donated one of his iconic red Fender Stratocaster guitars to a fundraising draw in aid of StagehandFund, supporting stage and production crew through the Covid-19 crisis. This guitar was played on all of the US dates of Mark’s 2019 ‘Down The Road Wherever’ Tour and at the Verona concert of the European leg.
Mark Knopfler is raising money for stage crew charity Stagehand’s #ILoveLive campaign, which is providing financial help for all UK stage crew who are in the greatest need. Stage crew seem to be the forgotten ones in the current pandemic. They’re the unsung heroes of the live entertainment world. Without them shows just couldn’t happen.
The impact of Covid-19 has been devastating for the whole music industry but particularly for the stage techs, sound engineers, guitar techs, keyboard techs, drum techs, stage managers, production managers, tour managers and other live support personnel who make shows possible.
With no shows since March, crew’s income has been slashed with many finding that they are ineligible for any kind of government financial aid. Many are in desperate need and most are sitting with mental health issues.

Great stuff. Donation made.
-
Yeah, also from Eric Clapton: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/win-eric-clapton-guitar
I'm not a fan of this guitar winning gimmick, but I guess that would really make people make a donation. The chances of winning in any of random giveaways are so little, you have better luck winning a million in a lottery.

Worth a punt for a fiver.
Was it a signature strat he played on OES?
EDIT: More details here:

Wow, 5+ grand already!

A lot of people helping with this cause, totally worth!

Therefore MK News asked a while ago if someone has good quality photographs of Mark playing a red strat at Verona or performing OES during the US leg
-
A very worthy cause!
-
£11,400 at the moment. That's impressive.

And still got 20 days to go, I'm pretty sure the final sum, including all other stars, would be quite enough to save an army of music workers.

he only play signature models on tours since 2003. I don't understand your question :think
But he played the 61' strat on the studio version
-
Great way to raise money for all the people who make the concerts happen. :clap
-
£18,000 at the moment. 19 days to go :D
-
Didn’t know he had one from 2013 ::)

As it was used just for one song (sheeeesh), it was probably a guitar that was laying under some sofa in the British Grove studios. A safe bet for Mark to give it away.
By the way, more than 20,000 donated! Combined, all the charity artists donated a huge amount already, I recon in 20 days it will be an insane amount.

I love the fact that they have discovered a genuine way of auctioning instruments of legendary musicians. Everyone's got a shot here, not only Japanese businessmen.
Two thumbs up!
-
Quite surprising that the Strat is at the top with 22k currently. Nick Cave at 13k, EC at 4k. He loves to deny it, but he’s still a guitar hero.

Can't see anything genuine in it, the guitar still could easily end up at some Japanese businessmen who threw enough cash to get enough 'tokens'. That's pretty typical marketing BS and in giveaways like this you can giveaway practically anything, cars, guitars, property, the amount of active bidders will always be enough to make profit. In this case, thankfully, the cause itself is good.
I'v never ever won anything in random giveaways. Imagine 10, 20, 30 thousand people in line and what a chances that you'll win? Basically 0. I'm more in line with contests where you need to actually do something, like this contest where you could shoot a music video for MK, that was bananas! But random giveaways is a complete waste of time and money. Bid only if you're in with the charity, you'll never win this guitar.

Why being so pessimistic, Pavel? Everyone has the chance to be the winner even you and me and everyone else who made a donation. So, let's think positiv which is btw the best you can do to survive this crazy world :wave

You're confusing being realistic with being pessimistic.

Over 30,000 already and seems like the percentage counter is now over, it now says 101%, I hope it would reach at least 100,000 by the end of it. Impressive that Mark has such a loyal fan base, more loyal and generous than all these other fine artists.
-
They've updated the target to 40k ;D
-
Currently at £43,178.

Now I'm interested in why this guitar even exists. I mean, why on Earth MK needs a separate Stratocaster to play One Every Street? What is so special, hard or quirky that he needs a whole new guitar to play it? It says the guitar was strung with 0.010 strings, okay, so that means his main Strat is something like 0.09 maybe. Interesting, why even bother, to me this is a typical "because I can" type of thing. He can use a new guitar for each song, so why not :lol

Another reason could be that Postcards is played at capo 6 and is followed by OES. No time to retune after removing the capo :)

Doesn't he use 9s on Strats that he plays, or, used to play, fast stuff on, such as Sultans? For more straight-ahead fingerpicking, the stuff you'd do on an acoustic guitar, I'd think 10s would feel and sound better.

No, it comes just with a radio to blow away.

So currently around a one in 12,000 chance of winning the guitar?
By comparison, Euromillions lottery is one in 1.39 million.

No public statements yet, but that's to be expected. I remember the prize draw for recent "find where the cover picture was taken" quest was also delayed.
-
That was a fun competition. :)
-
I wish they would hurry up to let me know I've won the guitar so I can start having lessons - the suspense is killing! ;)

They announced the lucky one today' anybody from this group?

No, I'm not Richard Landolt :lol
Lucky guy, to say the least.

Apart from Mark's input that's a highly questionable fundraiser. Robbie Williams raised only 2K pounds and the prize is signed Martin guitar and a written lyrics, he would raise much more should he sell it on the streets. Katie Melua raised laughable 200 pounds, and so on and so on. I'm not saying that this is a scam, I'm pretty sure this is not a scam, but the results are pretty baffling. If people really got their prizes I'm very happy for their win.
-
Congratulations to the lucky winner. :clap I hope he enjoys playing the guitar. :)
-
Congratulations to the new owner of this great guitar. Lucky you! :clap
