A question to all the real guitar connoisseurs: I always thought that MK had a red Stratocaster with serial number 84870 which is used from about 1977 to 1979. Now I visited a site where a person aquired David Knopfler's Black Stratocaster which has the same serial number? That guitar was used by David on stage in the early years of Dire Straits. Now how can these two guitars be the same? Do I overlook something or did MK's red guitar actually have a different serial number? The black guitar from David came with a personal letter in which he mentioned the serial number, so that must be correct. Anyone?

Hi,
I don't know the truth about this guitar but the site you 're mentioning has been accused of selling guitar owned by famous players which happen to be fake ones.
Don't know if you can read french but there's a very long thread (119 pages) in a french forum talking about it :

I can' t remember the details about david' s guitar but it might be a fake one , with a fake neck plate with Mark 's strat number.

But the serial number on the guitar is really 80470 according to pictures. Anyway, I never got this serial number thing, I mean you play on the instrument, not on the serial number.

The 80470 serial number is in fact the one of David's black Strat and not the one of Mark's red maple neck Strat. Both serials were listed in the Communique tour book. The reason I counted it for Mark's Strat was the wrong info from a German book on Dire Straits from 1980 (which seemed reliable otherwise).
David in fact sold the black Strat and the black Water of Love Telecaster.

Thanks very much for the information Ingo. I checked my Communique tour programme, but I can not find the actual serial numbers of these guitars. Only the type and building year are mentioned. Anyway, good to know that 80470 was really David's guitar. Sad that he had to sell it to fund his next record...
