Which song of Mark's can you just listen to and it makes you happy and smile ;D For me it's What Have I Got To Do, I am listening to it now, and it's just pure joy to me, I love it.
-
Even on the darkest day "Walk Of Life" cheers me up. Love it! :wave
-
The Ragpicker's Dream
-
A lot. Yesterday Punish The Monkey. The text is not optimistic but there is energy :)
-
"Darling Pretty".... :wave
-
My Parties
-
"Darling Pretty".... :wave
darling pretty is indeed a very good choice.
-
El macho
-
El macho
I'll have to go along with that; I love calling out the 2nd "El Macho" at the end of the stanza! :lol
-
Quality shoes is also a great song to make me happy. And there are a lot more....
-
What have I got to do and Darling pretty: +1
Postcards also for me
Saying that, MK is really great in making slow and thoughtful songs, not really happy ones
-
Once Upon a Time In the West - Alchemy. That groove is infectious, much due to John (and Terry of course). John's style might be rather simple, but it worked so well in Dire Straits.
-
Two amongst others, I'd say Beachcombing and My claim to fame.
But I also agree with Darling Pretty the poster ;D , I wouldn't say that MK is really good in making happy songs. I'd have more songs for a "which MK songs make you feel depressed?" topic lol and my number one choice would probably be : Dream of the drowned submariner. ;D ;D
-
Secondary Waltz for me - never ceases to make me chuckle!
-

But even those depressing songs can be absolutely beautiful.

Oh, Badges, Posters, Stickers & T-shirts! Hilarious. Eastbound Train too makes me smile, envisioning Mark checking out the lady on the train.
-
Yesterday Punish The Monkey, today and always Walk Of Life. Thanks Mark.
-
Walk of Life is a good shout. I can understand why Guy is so fed up of THAT keyboard/organ part but it is a feel good song.
Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes is probably the solo song that makes me feel happiest.
-
But even those depressing songs can be absolutely beautiful.
Yes, and the beauty of these songs is what makes you happy.
Just hearing his voice has that effect on me too.

Exactly!

Sultans of Swing...likes always
-
A really interesting question if you unpack it.
I don't suppose Mark does 'happy' music, but so many of his characters are happy despite their downtrodden positions in life. Like the itinerant worker or the hardworking farmer...
Songs that make me laugh - the more sarcastic stuff he's written. Things like millionaire blues I find amusing.
Happy songs- I suppose something like all that matters, a sentiment all parents will identify with.....
-
Walk of Life is pure joy.
Your postman can whistle it.
Your granny will dance to it when it comes on at a wedding.
-
Get Lucky.
Made me cry the first time I heard it (tears of joy), and it sometimes still does. I absolutely love that song.
-
Camerado is a good one.
And of course Going home, how could I forget it ?

Heavy up ;D
-
Heavy up ;D
:thumbsup I have the same.
-
But mostly Darling Pretty, Nobody's got the Gun (that outro is amazing), What it is, Sultans and Tunnel of Love to name a couple.
Also the outro of Where do you think you're going keeps me going
-
Postcards, We Can Get Wild, Sultans, Coyote, TOL also Walk of Life.
-
Simply to many to chose from!
-
Walk of Life is proving a popular choice, I like the video too, the band members are having a great time. Interestingly, I watch reaction videos of DS and MK on YouTube, and Walk of Life always gets a lot of love from people hearing it for the 1st time.

WOL, like you say seems a popular choice personally I much prefer the BIA Tour versions to the 'Album' version and absolutely love MK's Tele sounding so good and it literally 'rides' over all the other instruments!!

"Our Shangri-La" might be the happiest song MK ever wrote, apart from The Ragpicker's Dream. And the live recording... Oh my Gosh! 20 million views and that's for a seemingly "boring" song.

Interesting. For me, The Ragpicker's Dream is very reflective and sad.

Yes, Our Shangri-la is indeed a very "happy" song and that 2006 version is absolutely gorgeous -- great piano playing by Matt.

Time Will End All Sorrow

Oklahoma Ponies.

Shangri-La is one of my all-time favourite songs and the 2006 version is just beautiful as the whole concert was brilliantly. I've seen them live. It was such a thrill for me.
I think Matt Rollings was Mark's best piano player. He has a special touch, very sensitive. Outstanding version of Romeo and Juliet at this tour.

But according to Guy, Jim is the best musicians he’s ever worked with-possibly in the world.

Oklahoma Ponies.
Oh yes, simply awesome! Love Mike Mcgoldrick's chuckle at the end!!!
-
Oklahoma Ponies? Of course :)
-
That would have been fun to have been in the studio watching them all play it…..if it was played together of course.

Oh can you imagine! I reckon it would have been awesome to have witnessed the recording of OP....

I think we sometimes confuse feeling happy with feeling simply joyful, having fun. I feel absolutely happy when I listen to What It Is studio version or STP because it's a pinnacle of songwriting and recording, and everything, makes me feel happy that humanity is capable of doing such masterpieces. Walk Of Life makes me not particularly happy but joyful.
-
The intention of my original question was to include all of that, happy, smile, fun, joyful, a song that you hear and think, I love this, and it is having a uplifting positive affect on me, maybe you were having a bad day, you then play the song, and it makes you glad to be alive, and a Mark Knopfler fan.
I will add What's The Matter Baby to my previous choice too.
-
Of the songs which have already been mentioned, I most strongly agree with Our Shangri-La (perfect song for watching the sun go down on a beautiful summer evening) as well as Laughs And Jokes And Drinks And Smokes (never fails to bring a smile to my face).
I would also add Skateaway, which I think has an infectious groove and an uplifting chorus, and Golden Heart, as it is such a beautiful love song in a straightforward, uncomplicated way, even more so with guitar solo that perfectly matches that feeling.
-
going home another one of mine and sonny liston, fade to black, there's so many that make me smile from the man
....
not walk of life or romeo ,calling Elvis or on every street or...........
sorry forgot its songs that make you happy ;D
-
you then play the song, and it makes you glad to be alive, and a Mark Knopfler fan.
This is a regular feeling when I listen to his music. Sometimes it even makes me proud to be a MK fan. ;)
There is something in his voice and music that makes me feel so good, fills my heart with endless joy and happiness. I really cannot imagine a life without his music.
-
A very nice comment KnopfleRick:) I have the same.
-
Thanks, Robson. :wave I' m pretty sure that we are not the only ones who feel like this when it comes to MK.
-
I believe it :)
-
And girl, it looks so pretty to me
Like it always did
Oh, like the Spanish city to me
When we were kids
Yeah, girl it looks so pretty to me
Just like it always did
Oh, like the Spanish city to me
When we were kids

Always very proud to be an MK fan, and life without MK music just would not be good at all!!

I've been a fan of many bands over the years, but only one changed my life - DS/MK! :)

Done with Bonaparte! ;D

‘Cos something’s going to happen
To make your whole life better
Your whole life better one day
Something’s going to happen
To make your whole life better
Your whole life better one day.
:)

My Parties - Makes me chuckle anyhow! :lol
