The subject speaks for itself. Are there any knowledge on the forum about songs that DS or MK rehearsed that wasn’t played live?
For example On every street on some MK tour (although it was finally played in 2019).
-
The Man’s Too Strong was rehearsed for 2008.
-
Silvertown and Portobello Belle were rehearsed in Munich 2001 but never played that tour.

On Every Street was played in 2015 for the first time, in Milwaukee.

Apparently, some desirable songs from Down The Road was in the works for 2019 tour. I remember Guy said they "tried" "One Song At A Time" or something. But unfortunately, lately Mark write songs he can't even perform on stage, so I think it's pretty understandable why many of the great tracks are abscent from live shows. I think "Lights Of Taormina" Mark would love to play it 100%, but it's just too hard to sing it for 80 shows in a row. Another reason why he'd better slow down!
-
I remember that Guy showed the planned rehearsal list for the cancelled 2003 tour after Mark's motorcrash. If I remember correctly, The Man's Too Strong was already on that list, too. Other from that there were astonishingly few Dire Straits songs in the make from that year on.

Wonder why he didn't at least give OSAAT a go 'live' unless he struggled with it?? It's quite a simple tune compared to some that I can't imagine them not being able to play it?!

To my (limited) knowledge, we know very few about songs that were played during rehearsals and not on tour, whether with Dire Straits or solo. But we know more about stuff played during promos and never after, which is a pity. I'm thinking of an excellent version of Fade to black that was played in 2000, a few songs from the Ragpicker's dream, Everybody pays in 2004 and all the stuff from the KTGC album that was performed in 2007 and never after, except for True love will never fade. I may forget a few others too over the years. It also questions Mark's choice concerning "conservative" set-lists but it's been debated here a million times already. I loved Mark's shows but I wish he had varied a lot more, at least from one tour to another.

I downloaded at somepoint a soundcheck of "Terminal Of Tribute To" before Tracker tour. It is a shame they did not choose to do it. Great song.

Yes, and what a great version it was too - but obviously it was never to materialise again....

I haven‘t heard about a soundcheck of TOTT. Where can this be found or downloaded?

Trapper man and Back on the dance floor were rehearsed for the last tour.
OES was rehearsed from 2005 and 2008 I think, or at least between the candidates.
-
Here's the tracks released for the cancelled RPD tour that have never been played on tour:
quality shoe
old pigweed
Obviously we heard these on promo events but not a tour.

It was also rehearsed for the cancelled RPD tour in 2003 with Fats Kaplin on pedal steel. That would've been interesting.

Devil Baby was played in Amsterdam, second night on 2008 tour . I was there.

So it was. Think it was played a couple of times. Apologies.

wasn't devil baby played on that first 2008 tour show in Amsterdam, was there but cannot remember. also, the Terminal rehearsal mentioned earlier, was that not a live performance for this "secret gig" ?

I've corrected my Devil baby error. :smack
The original question was songs that weren't played "on tour" and this show I would regard as a one-off gig. :)

Yep!
I remember that concert. I recorded on VHS cassette. December 7, 2000 Lokomotywa Club, Warsaw.
This is probably the only version of Fade To Black we know.

I can only imagine he struggled with the lyrics or singing of the song. Very interesting information though Mr. Q.
I can remember Guy released a list of all the songs they had rehearsed for the RPD tour and I copied it at the time, just for future reference. It was the only time I could recall him being so revealing to the fans!

The soundquality was not that good so I deleted it. Guess you can find it here: https://knopflertk.org/tracker/index.php

Devil Baby was also played in 2003 in Amsterdam (Edison Awards). I guess his last gig before the crash? He played an awesome WII as well with an extented outro.

The TV channel had a phone line that you could call to vote for an encore. Mark was probably already home by the time they announced the winner 😂
Edit: here’s the full video in great quality. 18:22-18:37 goosebumps

Devil baby was played on several occasions during promo tours and a couple of times in 2008 too. Why they dropped it from the set is a mystery to me. Same as Daddy's gone to Knoxville for instance. It was probably to play an extended version of Marbletown. ;D
MK has so many great songs in his catalogue that could have been played on stage over the years and which will never be. It's why any surprise is usually very welcome by his audience. During his solo years, I'm thinking of stuff like Vic and Ray, Water of love, Are we in trouble now, The long highway, Junkie Doll, Back to Tupelo (fantastic), On every street or Once upon a time in the west more recently.
-
I have always thought that the concerts in 2008, particularly Amsterdam, were showcases for the Ragpicker's tour which didn't happen due to MK's accident. There were more songs played from Ragpicker's than KTGC in those first two concerts in Amsterdam - Marbletown, Devil Baby, Daddy's Gone to Knoxville,Hillfarmer's Blues and Why Aye Man, for example and only TLWNF and The Fish and the Bird from KTGC.

Ktgc had some great songs that would had worked well live, like Let It All Go, Punish the Monkey or even my favorite Madame Geneva. In 2019 we discovered that, also a favorite of mine, Heart Full of Holes could work well live despite being so long with so much lyrics, which is the reason I always thought it won't work well live!
-
For me also The Fish And The Bird.

Also We Can Get Wild - one of my favourites, but I like the whole KTGC album and it is a shame it is so underrated.

It has always been reminiscent to me of "If I Were a Carpenter and You Were a Lady" by Bobby Darin.

Yep I totally agree. Why KTGC was so ignored on tour is (also) a mystery for me. We can get wild as the opener with a full rocking band… and we would have got wild :)

Secondary Waltz was played live, it was OK although my favourite remains the MK solo version we got to see at Hay.

I heard it played at Newcastle City Hall, but I agree the version from Hay was very special.

Did you not have to do Scottish country dancing at PE at school?
The song resonates with me, it’s pretty much exactly what happened to me every Christmas.
-
We had to do country dancing once a week in our pants and vests in primary/first school. For some reason we didn’t get changed into a PE kit, we just took our clothes off. Can you imagine that happening today?

Thankfully not.
COVID will have put an end to it anyway, so every cloud…

Scottish country dancing at school? Maybe up North where you are but not down here. Kind of wish we did as I've got two left feet!

We did PE with no tops on - just our shorts. We were always at the teacher why the different rule for the girls! ;D

Dance is in the primary p.e curriculum currently.
Nothing about Scottish dancing specifically though.

Oh I agree undoubtedly, the version at Hay-on-Wye was outstanding and I still remember the chuckles from the crowd during the song!

Yeah, we had to do it in December, this was the early 90s.
As per the song it got as far south as Newcastle, Falkirk must have been a black spot!
