Sorry for the delay, feel free to start the next round after this one ends if I don't get round to it!

Lol rip all the voters, now this is impossible :lol

I know, getting into flip a coin category now!

No worries.... :thumbsup

Actually this round was easy enough with GH having the boot and I now know the order of elimination for me now with GL being my fave!

Not quite yet. ;D

Found this one difficult. Definitely not the first two but found the last three difficult to choose between. I decided to check the track listings and list the number of tracks I'd consider among my favourite and came up with this:
GL - 4
SL - 4
RPD - 7
Really surprised myself with the result, especially for RPD which I hadn't really rated so highly.

Oh yeah, these albums are filled with great tracks, that's why it's so hard to decide. I was barely able to vote for Golden Heart simply because I have an emotional connection to Get Lucky, and Shangri-La and The Ragpicker are simply masterpieces. Sailing To Philadelphia, I'd listen more to it rather than GH. So I voted... Barely! Next one is going to be funny.

GH is an amzing album, well they are all amazing but in this poll I listen to GH the least out of the remaining albums....
GL, Ragpickers and Shangri-la are just like you say - Masterpieces

ONLY 4 tracks from SL & GL? Poor show....... :hmm

Well, you've got to be strict! These are songs I'd consider timeless in the catalogue of Mark's work and the ones I'd go to straight away when playing the album.
-
Fair enough but just 4 tracks each from both of those masterpiece albums?
-
Oooh, Ragpickers Dream with the most votes so far...:think
-
Seems pretty obvious by now that STP will win.

Seems pretty obvious by now that STP will win.
It was obvious for me right from the start, even though STP is my least favourite album. True, there are some really great songs on the album, but not enough for it to be one of my favourites.
-
So it seems with StP but its certainly not my fave, its up there but not my fave...

I still have hopes that Get Lucky could get lucky and win in the end, just like Rocky wins against Apollo at the very last second. ;D

Spoiler alert - Rocky gets beat! (In the first one anyway :) )

Get Lucky also has many great songs, but also some that are not on my list of favourites - "You Can't Beat The House", "Hard Shoulder" and "The Car Was The One" for example.

Absolutely, GL is just a warm amazing album of wordsmith songs..

Hard Shoulder is one of my faves. It's MK doing Glen Campbell doing Jimmy Webb.

I must admit that I didn't really hear the Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb connection, but now I can definitely hear it! :)
@JF Yes, it does sound a bit Christmassy!

I foresee that STP would be the winner.
That's my reason to vote against it, lol.
I think that both Shangri-la and Get Lucky are the best records in term of a complete thing, but Shangri-la has too much songs in my opinion, the last songs of it gets boring for me.

I'm 100% by you with both Shangri-la and Get Lucky but as for boring tracks - nah, can never be bored with MK...

You just never know, I'm sure it will be up there!!

I asked Guy if it was influenced by Witchita Lineman (man working away in remote location while mournful about love, baritone guitar, strings) and he sort of confirmed it (he never actually answers a question!)

I also think STP will win, because it is the best album
SL would have been better without track 12 and 13. True

My fave is Shangri-La. Hope stays till the end.
When Mark came back with this brilliant album, after his motorcycle accident, I fell in love the first time I listened to it. Since then my no. 1.

It's one of my favourites, along with KTGC and Tracker and I listen to the whole album without feeling bored at all. I hope it wins, but I feel certain the winner will be STP.

To me SL is perfect as it is and you just cannot leave out SUG or DG!!

Shangri La is my favourite but the last track is kind of stupid and doesn’t make sense.

'Don't crash the ambulance' on reflection is actually quite crap isn't it??!
It's a ditty about the Bush Presidency isn't it?

I think so, in a world where Bill Clinton doesn’t exist?
MK doing comedy doesn’t work often, see also My Parties.

Personally I quite like MP - it is really quite catchy and funny but DCTA just isn't.....
-
My Parties should have been a bside at best.

MP is actually quite good - try listening to it again, it might make you smile!
-
I like every track on SL, including DCTA. The line "there's even a whistle in there for attracting attention" makes me smile - it's something similar to what they say on a plane when it's about to take-off. ;)
-

Oh my! This is blasphemy! For an On Every Street lover like me this hits me right in the heart! :)

An 'OES' Lover? Oh dear.....Good album dont get me wrong but I wouldn't say I'm a lover of this particular album personally....
-
My Parties should have been a bside at best.
Never. One of the best songs on the album, whereas When It Comes To You, Ticket To Heaven and My Parties not even are good b-sides.

I used to think How Long should be B side. But after 3O years, I think the album on every street is complete.

I don’t understand?
-
I can't agree about Ticket To Heaven, it is a beautiful song, lovely strings arrangement from Sir George Martin, to me it is the song that pointed towards Mark going solo, it has a solo era feel about it rather than a Dire Straits song, maybe that is why it is not highly rated.

What's not to understand? I think My Parties is one of the best songs of the On Every Street album while Dusty said it should be a b side at best. Songs on On Every Street that I myself would see at b sides at best qualitywise are When It Comes To You, Ticket To Heaven and How Long. Better now? Jesus!

The humour wears thin for me half way through but I don't mind listening to it again once in a while even though I usually skip this along with Ticket to Heaven. Let's just say it's quirky and leave it there! ;D
-
OES is a rather dark album, so a couple of light-hearted tracks provide some 'comic relief' as it were.
Ticket to Heaven is just pure sarcasm. Mark copies the musical style of the (in)famous American teleevangelists of that time. My Parties sounds like a Randy Newman song. It doesn't do much for me, but I like how you really can envision what the party looks like.
One thing I don't like about OES is how the songs are ordered. It's more or less a rocking song, then a slow song, then a rocking song, etc. I like the 'waves' to be a bit bigger.
-

I know I belong in the minority. I'm very country/roots/folk-oriented guy, so it's only natural I enjoy listening On Every Street. It was also the very first Dire Straits album I ever listened to, so I also have the sentimental attachment to it. I was also listening to You and Your Friend when I met my wife!

Fair do's rmarques821 - personally OES was awesome when it first came out and I was probably like many on here like a 'kid in a sweet shop' but alas as time has gone on I'm afraid OES for me just doesn't get played anymore...

And so, with the deadline fast approaching its RD so far with most votes but I note that GH & S L aren't far behind!!
-
looking at the outcome of the survey it is clear that very few people think that STP is one of the least successful jobs. I still don't know what to choose between STP and GL, what it is - sailing to philadelphia - last laugh or get lucky - so far from the clyde - piper to the end.....what an enigma 8) 8) 8)

On the contrary, StP seems the favourite.......I know where my forthcoming votes are going!!
-
My opinion is that STP has very little to do with the career that Knopfler has as a solo artist. For me, first MK solo record is Ragpickers, from that one, he found his path.
GH was experimentation looking for his solo character, STP was a mix betwen the old MK from the Straits days, and the MK he wanted to be as a solo artist, and in RPD he already found what he wanted to be.
I understand that people like STP the most as it's the most DS MK solo record, but that record is not the MK solo artists. People who thinks that's the best, is because they like more his Straits days than his solo career.
That's why I would keep voting against STP until the last poll, or until it gets out, what happens first.
-
100% agree jbaent, RD was the first 'defining' MK Solo album without doubt and I, like you will keep voting both GH & StP until they hopefully disappear....
-
And so, Bye Bye Ragpickers Dream..... :disbelief :disbelief
