This is interesting. A track written by my favourite artist (MK) covered by another of my favourite artists (Sturgill Simpson).

That's interesting. I think Mark's songs are very "coverable" if that's a word, but not a lot of people care about his songs as he's generally underrated. I think covers on Mark's songs appear almost at the same rate the guy publishes his own albums. Like, one decent cover in a few years... Which is a shame for sure.

I don't know where I read this before, or maybe I missundersood it, but I think that "When it comes to you" was recorded first by John Anderson than by Dire Straits, and curiously DS released it before than Anderson!
The story was something like MK wasn't going to record it and John asked him if he could record the song, Mk said yes, but then MK had second thoughts and record it himself for DS OES.

Exactly!
Before the release of On every street album in September 1991, Mark wasn't sure about including When it comes to you in the band's last studio album, so he gave the tape to John Anderson who recorded a version of this title with country accents, with Mark Knopfler on guitar. Mark then invited John Anderson on stage at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver to perform the title with Dire Straits.

I think John Anderson did a great job on the cover and to hear Mark on the guitar is a highlight. Anderson was very successful with the song, so it peaked no. 3 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and number no. 2 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. We all know the story, but maybe there are a few fans out there who haven't heart about it, so here is the link to the video who tells the story. It's a shame John Anderson's performance with the Straits has not been recorded.
