interesting : "Every week we’ll be sharing a lyric excerpt chosen by Mark Knopfler from his Dire Straits songwriting."
I thought Mark was looking forward only... ::) ;D

I don't understand. Mark chooses the lyrics?

Great idea... For a songwriter in general. Even if you're the hardest die-hard fan of them all, you can't remember all the lyrics, and there are a lot of surprising lines sometimes.
-
Not a chance Mark is actually choosing these lyrics. It's just a PR/Marketing thing to gather more reaction from the public.
He probably doesn't even remember he wrote Lions! ;D
-
I think so too, but for sure Lions remembers :)

Lions, I always loved that song. Brilliant lyrics.

That’s a good lyric and I’m sure MK is still proud of it :)

They never look back. I'll bet Guy regrets saying that! :lol

This song has always awakened in me a great fascination, melody, lyrics, the way Mark sings, rhythm, killer backing vocals... it takes me to a place I've never been physically, Trafalgar Square, the square in central London with the Lions of stone, in a late afternoon. Mark Knopfler has an incredible gift for telling a story and creating images in our minds, Lions is a great example, without a doubt my favorite song from the first album, without demeaning the others, all of them tasty.
-
Do I remember correctly that this song was not planned for the album?

What I heard is that David Knopfler actually composed the melody. The Am7, C, G, F7 progression was all his idea. And Mark wrote the lyrics.
I'm not sure about this, though.

A perfect song to end an album with. Follow Me Home, too. Both songs have always been special to me.
-
Oh yeah Follow Me Home. It is hard to find a better ending. Single Handed Sailor - the sound of the sea waves and Follow Me Home - beautiful.

Isn't it great that these songs by Mark still fascinate us after all these years? Only a brilliant songwriter can do that!
-
Exactly!

it's not exactly that David composed the melody, it is just that when the two brothers played togetther on acoustic guitars few years before dire straits, they were improvising and some ideas came up. when during 1st album recording sessions, Mark had to wrote another song to complete the tracklist, David suggested him to use one melody they had improvised some years before
its' explained in the Oldfield book

Yes, that's right. Year 1976.

Very nice they used the same typo (font) for the quote as on the album. Hope this will be continued with other song quotes. I'm not into FB so if somebody could bring these over here that would be appreciated.
