I just would like to know
I just would like to know.
For you, what are the marked differences in Terry's approach on drums during the LOG tour and BIA? What changes in the drums between these two tours? Especially the songs that were played on both tours, SOS, TOL...
-
Drums were overdriven in the BIA tour, so much that it was way excessive at any rate...
-
Drums during the LoG tour were the best for Dire Straits at that time. The same way that Pick's drumming was perfect during 78-80.
I also like the drums during 85/86, but the sound was a bit more processed as it also changed from album to album to a more stadium-rock oriented sound.
-
Not forgetting those symonds hex pad electric drums used on the later tour. Those sounds have not aged well..
: ;D

I hadn't noticed. On what song(s)?
That's a bit like saying an old silent film from the 1920s hasn't aged well because it isn't a "talkie". They were of their time.

Off the top of my head...
85 intro to expresso love
Small fills in TMTS
There are good up close pictures of the pads themselves on Wembley 85. Mounted above TWs natural hi hat position.
As for their sound, we'll its all a matter of taste. Thing is people still use pianos and organs from the silent era ;)

I always thought that drums on BIA tour where trigged
at least its sounds like it was
am I wrong ? :think

No, definitely not triggered drums. That sort of music tec didn't really see the working light of day until the early 90s. I wouldn't be surprised if they were using those pads on Terry's kit to trigger a variety of different sounds aside from pure electronic drum sounds.
It's interesting that there is so little info about DS use of these during that tour...

Electronic pads also on Ride across the river and Solid rock, as far as I recall, i think also One world.

There will be others that know better but I think he used a Ludwig kit on both tours. There is even some kind of schematic diagram of the kit set up floating around on the internet.
The only notable difference on the kit was the addition of the Symons drum pads, which were not used at all that often as others have said. Really good interview here, where he talks about those pads and said he didn't like them because they had no response - i.e they were really hard.

For me the difference in sound in drums is negligible between tours. Any perceived change in soundis probably more down to snyths filling up the mix much more than on the LOG tour. Guy was now an addition to the group and keyboards became ever more present alongside guitar.

more driven sound, crunchier during BIA tour
