So obviously, a lot of good things happen these days, with great releases, and clearly, the MK team and Guy Fletcher in particular care about fans and legacy.
I wonder what other things could be done here? I really think Guy does a great job with all these remasters, a local hero right there.
Vinyl versions of Golden Heart, Sailing To Philadelphia
The Ragpicker's Dream LP reissue, Shangri-La LP reissue
Remastered and extended version of On The Night live album
Expanded version of Alchemy
LIVE AT THE RAINBOW proper release
Obv, a lot of other things are in the pipeline, namely
New MK album
Interviews and EPKs
Henrik Hansen movie
Teenage Cancer Trust thing
Mark and AC/DC guy documentary
Local Hero release finally
A lot of stuff! My requests would be as follows:
Reissue the Fender Mark Knopfler Signature Stratocaster
Remaster On The Night video in 4K if possible with tons of bonuses
Release one of the live shows from the late 2000s as it seems to be the peak of MK
-
I'm good for live stuff to be honest. I would be more interested in demo's, recorded prior to the albums.
It seems Communique was recorded in its entirety in London for instance; would loooove to hear that!
The release of the Charlie Gillet demo on Record store day was a great move.
-
Add a complete version of Alchemy without any edits
-
Proper solo blu-ray, Madrid or the Jools Holland show.
-
oh, add to that (but highly unlikely) a biography written by M.Knopfler.
-

Add a complete live concert from the BIA tour.
-
Attending a MK (farewell) concert ::)

one of my holy grails too

"The release of the Charlie Gillet demo on Record store day was a great move"
Exactly! But I would like to request CD version.
-
oh, add to that (but highly unlikely) a biography written by M.Knopfler.
"Blowing my own trumpet" as working title lol

I think writing a book is a perfect idea for an old man, if you can't and don't want to tour and travel all the time anymore, why not write a few words each day, and after a couple of years, it would translate into a book full of stories.
Mark could do it, judging by his efforts on the British Grove Broadcast, where if you count it, he spoke for a whole 3 hours in 24 episodes, it's a lot of stories and thoughts.
As a man who made himself, I think Mark should've written a biography 50 years ago, let alone now. It would be a masterclass on optimism. UPD: His songs are already such a masterclass tho.

It's all true. But Mark won't do that. I don't know, but it's not his style.

Never thought he would do a tv show with Brian Johnson so why not wright a book??

Yeah... But you'll never know. I remember my shock when this radio programme was announced, I too thought it was not Mark's style. Just hanging around, telling stories and introducing himself "This is Mark Knopfler", releasing new episodes on a weekly basis, all unusual and extremely personal for the man. Of course, Bob Dylan had a radio show, and many others, but Bob's also got some memoirs published.
I'd rather have a podcast than a book, which sounds ridiculous of course, but for Mark it's easy. He's got a whole recording studio, after all, and he's a great storyteller and a companion for a talk show. Talking is easier than writing. It's all dreams of course, but you'll never know!
-

Exactly, or a radio show, so you never know these days with MK.

There is also a MOFI edition of OES coming this year.
My number one wish is for a DS documentary with all four founding members being interviewed together.
-
my whishes would be :
- at least one recording from the BIA tour
- at least one recording from OL tour
- deluxe editions from the studios albums with bonus tracks (B-sides, demos...)
- Mandela gig
- and of course a real "complete" Alchemy release
-
After the disappointment with the Alchemy new version I would say...
Beware with what you wish!
-
DS Last concert from Sydney. April 26, 1986.
Golden Heart tour: Théatre Antique Vaison-la-Romaine France on August 3, 1996.
Sailing To Philadelphia tour: maybe Madrid someday? July 2, 2001
I also dream of a concert from Kill To Get Crimson tour.
-
If there will be a 2nd live box my wishlist would be:
- a early days show
- a 1980/81 show
- a full BiA show
- Nelson Mandela gig with Eric Clapton with the 3 Knebworth 1990 songs as bonus.
- a show we didn’t know it was recorded
- a full OES show from one night
Solo Stuff
- a full GH show
- a full Notting Hillbillies show
- a full StP show (with Pyroman)
- 2002 benefit show(s) with DS and NhB
- a full KtgC show
-
I would like to have an unedited copy of the song "Serious Sh*t".

John had references to a chat with MK during an interview. MK had asked him why he did the book. John said he replied MK with the sentence "Well, you are most certainly not going to do it, and I think the DS history deserves it, so I might as well do it".

Among the things already stated, I would also like:
The original version of Private Dancer with Mark's vocals.
A studio version of Two Skinny Kids.
Releases of the soundtrack music of Hooves of Fire, Charles and Diana wedding, and all the ques from his other film soundtracks, I remember a lovely acoustic finger picking track in the Metroland film, which is not on the album.
All the other one off things, for example The Ghost of Fafner Hall.
-
Thanks for the reminded.

I'd like something released from the BIA tour. I find it incredible that a band that was arguably the biggest in the world at that point have nothing documenting the period. If they spent time there must be hundreds of news snippets and photographs from countries around the world. There must be clips and interviews lurking here and there, but we have absolutely nothing. We could have an entire BIA box set for heavens sake!
It'd also be nice to have something from the early solo period on DVD. I've never been fond of A Night In London. The performance is uninspiring and Mark looks even more bored than he did in Sydney '86! The least said about Real Live Roadrunning the better. If I see the back of his head one more time...
Any time I want to look on YouTube there's nothing new to seek and the best versions come from audience videos. No wonder they keep remastering Alchemy. ::)
-
The MK south park CD box: longer, bigger and uncut. Would love to hear the actual recording of WII and entire GH album without fade outs.

Maybe it all went to shit right after the fade like Telegraph Road.

It will still remains better than the live version ending of AWITN.

- Madrid 2001 DVD.
- 4K Remasters of OTN, Basel 92 & Nimes 92
- Planet of new Orleans live from soundboard ( C'mon there should be some recording somewhere)
- Some PRO video material from 96 tour, but I guess that literally doesn't exist.

There's the so-called "erotic version" which was recorded in Rotterdam '91 I believe. Anyone else remember that? Of course I never owned the video myself. :-[

I think that Planet comes from the production rehearsals, similar scenes can be seen (the one from DS playing, I mean) during the MTV Special, which have scenes of the band playing Calling Elvis and Planet during that production rehearsals.

I think these were all shot on video? If so no chance of getting 4k out of them, you can do some AI upscaling and the like to video but it's never going to be as good as film.

With the upcoming live boxset i was wondering IF you had the chance to add a full BiA show which show it would be? Would you choose for the well known circulating soundboard / FM Broadcast show like Sydney, Wembley Arena, Houston, Cleveland and San Antonio or would you see something from the vaults which you didn't know it was recorded?
-
If I could choose one I didn't expect to have been recorded, Christchurch, 1986-03-07
Otherwise Wembley 85 in full and Sydney 86 (also in full) would do it.
-
Sydney 86 because I like the key of the last concerts that were recorded: Alchemy, Rainbow Theater.
On The Night is a completely different story:)
-
In Instagram comments Guy said that none of the BIA recordings are multitracks, just stereo mixes so he can't do anything with those.

Can't they utilize the A.I. de-mix technology used for the recent Beatles releases?

You really want it?

Lolz. They can't even fade the ending to Telegraph Road. Forget it.

At that time they were the biggest band in the world.
Had one off the best selling albums ever and did a tour that was massieve.. i'm sure they will have something good lying in the vaults. I find it very very strange that nothing off the BIA tour is about to be realeased with the new box....

Surely at some point. It doesn't have to be A1 sound quality but as long as it's good and new.
-
Priority is set to multitrack source but after awhile they will release radio shows from the master tape.
The KBFH Wembley 85 is good recording and well mixed.
-
Bruce Springsteen also released most from his Archives in multitrack but some weren’t and even those sound great. So hopefully we get from the BiA also in the future a release

We kindof have Split 1985 already (audience tape). Jerusalem maybe? Not sure where Portobello Belle was dropped. Heck, we don't have anything from the early European leg, either. One of the Israeli shows would be my pick, and if not: New years eve 1985. Just because of the rare tunes.
-
I think the only one with a slight chance of existing in multitracks is Wembley 85 as it was recorded with the rolling stones mobile for the TV broadcast.
The rest were mixed for radio or TV broadcast more or less on the fly so it's unlikely they are recorded in multitracks.
-
They rehearsed some new stuff for the Australian leg but decided TOL was becoming ridiculously long!
I'd go for East Rutherford 13.10.85 last show of the N American leg. Nothing really special, just thought they were playing really well at that stage.
-
A release of the Sydney 1986 concert would be amazing.

According to Guy on Instagram, Sydney 86 doesn't exist on multitracks, just a stereo mix and he can't work with that for a release.

Yes. But it's very interesting and strange. There is Rainbow Theater from 1979. There is nothing professional recording of Brothers In Arms tour

When they were in the middle of the phenomenon that was BiA they wouldn't have realised that it was going to end up having historic status.
They had just recorded and released a live album/video of the previous tour so I'm sure they assumed there wouldn't be appetite from the public to buy another so soon after.

Yes, and very short-sighted. Gives me a bad taste listening to Alchemy in the future.

I remember a DSIS newsletter where someone asked Liz Whatley if there would be any live record from the BIA tour and she answered that MK considered the set was quite similar to Alchemy so it won't make sense.

Better version on Live In 85/86 than on Alchemy.
Again personnal taste

That's probably the reason they didn't invest in hiring a mobile studio to record BIA shows.

Because they didn't have hindsight and he's too mean to hire one just in case they don't release one. 💰

But Phonogramm could have done it.
After all official live recording are by the record company not the band itself.

With Alchemy being their previous record, I doubt it as it was too close in the timeline. Maybe nowadays that could be something more common but in those days, you don't release so much live records, usually one at the half of the career of a band and other at the end (which was what happened with DS...) specially since hiring a mobile recording studio was expensive, so you had to think about it in a commercial way.
However, I think that there are multitracks from Wembley 85 as far as the credits of the tv broadcast mentions that they used the Rolling Stones Mobile (the same they used for Alchemy) so probably they should have those multitracks somewhere, same than the Rainbow 79 concert, that was recorded for the Arena documentary. If there were multitracks of that, just for the documentary, they should have the Wembley multitracks as well!
-
You may be right about Wembley 85.
I suppose that Guy was given the tapes to work on them but was it involved with research and right securing?
Wembley 85 (July 10) recording was used by 2 braodcasters :
- on Channel4 TV channel in UK
- on King Biscuit Flower Hour syndicated radio show [then owned by DIR BROADCASTING CORP and sold to Wolfgang's] in the US
But who is the legal owner of the master tape recording ?
And is it lost?

I hope so!

I recently purchased a bootleg DS Live USA. Concert from Cleveland on August 5, 1985. Incomplete but sounds very good.
CD. 1
Ride across the river
One world
Romeo and Juliet
Private investigations
Why worry
Walk of life
Two young lovers
CD. 2
Money for nothing
Tunnel of love
Expresso love
Solid rock, Brothers in arms, Going home - Houston 17th August 1985
The last 3 songs from Houston don't sound that good. But this concert would also be a good candidate for an official live album.
-
Cleveland is just stereo mix, no multitracks.

Hi Robeson. Is it the old 2-CD-Set from Swinging Pig Records ? Named by Swining pig as Dire Straits - American Tour 1985, Cuyahoga Falls. ? There is a 3-LP-record set out now ,Blossom Music Center. Is that the Cleveland-Gig, you mean ? :think
I´ve spotted out another adäquate candidate for a new release from BIA-Tour 1985. It is Berlin Deutschlandhalle 1985. I have it as 2-CDR-Set and as audio-files on my computer. I think it was from Jeroens collection for me. For my taste, it also has a really good sound-quality, but i think it was incomplete, a portion of Tunnel of love is missing, as i can recall. They played a part of the German national anthem in Going Home. Yes, i think we can spot out some other very goodsounding gigs from that tour as a little dream for re-release on 2-CD-Set or on Vinyl-set. :think
