Hi everyone, I'm sure you've all heard the exciting news about the Mark Knopfler Guitar Collection, selling at Christie's London in January. I'm one of the specialists that have been working on the auction and specifically have been dealing with the epic task of trying to find photographs of Mark playing these guitars on stage. :wave We are struggling to find a few photographs and hope you might be able to help before the catalogue goes to print in a week or so! Please get in touch with me cgraham@christies.com if you were at these concerts and have photographs of any of the following, as we would be very interested in licensing them for the catalogue:
Pensa/Suhr "R" Custom prototype, red with black pickguard, used during the On Every Street Tour 1991-92 for performances of 'Two Young Lovers'. I know there are two photos posted on oneverybootleg.nl but the photographers are unknown. If you were the photographer of one of the following shots, get in touch :)

MK Signature Stratocaster with Danelectro "lipstick" pickups, used for a duet of 'Forever Young' with Bob Dylan at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on 21 November 2011. I know there are videos on youtube but these are quite low resolution for screenshot/catalogue use.

Also if anyone attended 2008 meet and greets, we are looking for a photo of the double bass in use - probably played by Glenn Worf.
Thanks so much in advance, fingers crossed that some of you were snapping away at these shows!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
If I understand correctly the information, is it possible to visit the guitars on display in Christie's at London, freely? Or is needed to get tickets, reservation etc?
Would remain the guitars on display after the public sale for a period of time or that would be closed after the sale?
Thanks in advance.

That is my understanding.
And I haven't read anything indicating otherwise.
That's why I'm planning to go.

Hello and thanks for the welcome! Yes of course, everyone is welcome to visit - it is free entry, no reservations required (all Christie's exhibitions are free entry) and we even have free barista coffee in the lobby. The exhibition will close on 30th Jan, with the auction following on 31st Jan, so the guitars will not be on display after the sale.

yes! as long as they don't sell out... so I would say it's a bit risky if you were coming on the last day, but if you are planning to visit in the first week I think you should be fine to get a catalogue. This is why we have a catalogue pre-order, so we can gauge demand and increase our print run if there is a large pre-order. You could also try calling Christie's reception and paying for a catalogue over the phone, they should be able to put it aside for you under the desk until you pick it up.

I'm trying to buy the catalog but I'm having problems. Do any of you know of any restrictions for selling outside the UK?
:thumbsup

Perhaps they are struggling to keep up with demand. I've been to many auctions and viewings and nobody buys them; there's usually a couple floating around the room to look through and that's all. It won't be often an auction catalogue sells like this!

Many people bought it from outside the UK, most of them were lucky enough to receive it yesterday and some others, like me, are waiting that customs allow it to arrive home after asking for documentation just in case they can charge any possible fee...

I considered that hence my last sentence, however they still may have underestimated demand. :)

Ok I try again and again until I got It ..I must got it :P

Hi there, i received the book today. Lots of information, even on the forthcoming tracks for the new album, "unreleased" tracks and "2001 Madrid DVD". A collectible for sure.
-
Sooo happy....my book arrived today! :D
It has only taken 6 days from day of order till delivery. It really looks great. Lots to read and great pics. It's worth all the money.
-
I did not buy it because I know what will happen to it : sleeping in my bookcase.
So the PDF is doing it for me.

This catalogue is amazing for any MK guitar aficionado. Really well researched with reliable sources (Mr. Saggers, Ron Eve, Rudy Pensa, John Suhr, MK himself), including great pictures and relevant documentation. To have something like that for all MK guitars would be a dream. Too bad it took MK selling some of his treasures to be able to obtain this high quality document. It's probably not fair to compare but I dare to say it is better than John Illsley's book! At least I have more fun digging into it than when I had reading John's book.

And the funniest thing it's not even that hard to make. Just ask some folks a few questions to get first-hand evidence, package it with fitting images and voila — a great book is born. Don't get me wrong, it's a great job, and highly professional. But I too wish to have something about "unreleased" guitars. Let's dream.
I would go one step further and make a video with the sound demonstration of each guitar, and most importantly, the sounds it made on the record. This is, after all, the purpose of an instrument, right? You play and listen to it, and not watch images. Looking at photos of guitars is like showing a drowning man a picture of a scuba tank.
-
There's really no question that this is better than John's book, which was fine.
Obviously some recency bias on my part, but for me this is unquestionably the finest book so far released relating to MK/DS (jbaent and DMG a close second :) )
