Hi,
I searched and did not see it here, so sorry if it has been up before. It was online 27 of April 2024.
Gilmour praises Knopfler for doing especially the first album which he find one of the all time greatest. Nice gesture from another master.

Nice, thank you!
Isn't it unbelievable? The great Gilmour, at the height of his career in the the late 70s, wanting to steal licks from newcomer MK? :lol
-
last year, in the Guitar Tricks Insider magazine, Gilmour gaves his 5 top albums :

It would be interesting to hear what Mark thinks about Pink Floyd, has he ever mentioned them?

he mentionned Gilmour in this magazine
"I've played with him before, but we haven't recorded together. I like his intonation, there's always a swampy, bluesy quality to the sound of his stratocatser, but also a crystalline quality at the same time that's more in line with my personal sound. What I also like about Dave is the way he plays, hovering around the central melody, which he rarely tackles head-on; it's the mark of a great guitarist."

Yes, thanks, great comments from Mark, but. has Mark ever mentioned any Pink Floyd songs or albums?

I don't know.
But I remember journalists saying that songs Brothers in arms and fade to black had a floydish flavour

I can't remember any explicit mention, but any guitarplayer would have been massively influenced by Pink Floyd in the 60s and 70s. They met and have worked together sporadically (e.g. Princes Trust, French and Saunders etc.), and these days the even look very much alike :lol
"Broken Bones" is certainly an indirect compliment to David, same as "I dug up a diamond" is a nod to Don Felder and Joe Walsh. I just love it when he picks up other people's styles :)

Broken Bones to David ? :hmm
I find it more to JJ Cale... :think

I remember an interview, but i can't remember in print or video, and i'm not sure this intrview even xists, my memory may be playing a trick on me, but he says his son came to him when he was about 12-3 maybe and said something like, "hey dad, there's a band called Pink Floyd, and they are great," and Mark replies, "oh really, ok, i will check them, thank you""

Of course, all over the place, but the rhythm line is like "Another Brick in the Wall", isn't it? "We don't need no education..."
DG is of course also influenced by J.J. :-)

the rhythm guitar part in "Another brick int he wall part2" was influenced by the disco fashion at the time, and especially Nile Rodgers 's style of playin'

Yes, I remember that interview, it was in print. Must be from around STP times. They also talked about his skiing lesson, and how the kids loved the dinosaur.

Yes, I would say Broken Bones is MK trying to do disco rather than trying to do Another Brick In The Wall.
It's funny that disco was so prevalent in the late 70s that even all the rock bands had to go disco (Pink Floyd's most successful song, Miss You by the Rolling Stones. Queen, Rod Stewart, Eagles). 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton, people think it's country but it's pure four on the floor disco!

may i again point out that Far out magazine is a CRAP money grabbing site that only collects news from elsewhere and lives from the clicks generated by shit headlines
still, the actual discussion is a great one
-
Didn't Far Out use to be a pretty high-quality print magazine sometime back in the 80s and 90s? Or is that a different Far Out?

Are you maybe thinking of Time Out?
-
Yes, probably.
Far Out was only founded in 2010, says Dr. Wik.
