Title: Dire Straits Film
Post by: qjamesfloyd on May 23, 2024, 02:34:33 PM
If a film was made about Dire Straits, which actors would you choose for any musician during the life of the band?

I once imagined a film about Mark.

Old Mark would be played by Clint Eastwood. Grumpy as hell, bitter, recluse, in the model of Walt in Gran Torino.
A young fan who manage to reach out to him, and after initial sharp rejection, would  touch Mark, get him to talk, and especially about why he stopped playing Tunnel of Love.
The young lad would would decide Mark to go for a last tour - with a superb TOL version as a closer. With flash Back to TOL 1985...

Yeah, I know. Dreamer, nothing but a dreamer...

Haha, that sounds like a good film!
I've often thought that there are some similarities between Clint Eastwood and Mark, although Mark is of course no longer grumpy at all now. :-)
A young-middle-aged Mark could be played by David Luiz, the Brazilian footballer, who is also looking for a job at the moment:

A biographical film about MK about DS? No. I'm not interested. Biographical films distort the main character. There are probably exceptions but I'm not convinced :)

Ha ha, Clint Eastwood and MK are my two heroes!

Never really thought of them being similar before though. I guess they are both single minded with a clear vision of how to get to the top.

Gran Torino is one of my favourite movies of all times.
This grumpy, bitter character, actually showing his humanity with fake racist comments that he doesn't mean... Being touched by this witty, joyful Asian girl, and ending up giving his life for her... So great.
I really thought he could play Mark, who can also be very intimidating and grumpy, but is kind hearted at the core...

Definitely. And they're both just terminally cool.

GT is one of Eastwood's best films!

So you are making movies? Ok, how about this, i wrote it as a fantasy twit a few months ago (in turkish): in my dream, i'm a doctor who went to britain. (brain drain. Could be a good rock band name btw, no?). Anyway, it's early 60s (time travel?) , northern england. A boy patient is brought. Unconscious. A snake bite or maybe a rusty nail smth, it's a dream so i can't remember well. There are two other doctors, one from Nigeria, other Pakistan and me from Turkey. They say we should cut the hand or maybe the arm becoz it's already late, the boy could die. I say no, my old grandmother used to do smth different in this kind of cases, she had a formula with olive oil, garlic, vinegar etc. They say wtf, are you an idiot, this is not scientific old woman stuff. No way. Voices are raised, maybe a little scuffle… but in the end i win. The shift ends, i went home, think about the case, what am i doing. They are right, if the boy dies i'll be consumed by guilt for the rest of my life. I decide to call the hospital and tell them to cut the arm. But some small thing intrudes or i fall asleep and i don’t call. Tomorrow i learn that he's recovering. About a week later he turns up, he was all sleeping when ill so this is the first time we are talking. He learnt about what happened and says thank you sır. I say it's our job etc. I ask his name. Mark, sir. Mark? Mark Knopfler, sir. And i’ve decided to become a doctor after this incident, sir. I say do not make hasty decisions. … And he later makes a song about it, “Sultan of the Turkish Doctors.” So if George Clooney or Kevin Costner plays me I won’t ask a penny for the scenario. Otherwise I ‘ll get %3 of the box office. Deal? “It was a sleepless night shift / patients come and go / coffee and nicotine keeps him wake / and the sighs and cries of the patients, / he was the sultan / he was the sultan of the turkish doctors (guitar solo here)   The End

MK in a movie? Only two possible options: Luka Modric and James Blunt. John Illsley can be played by Brian May.

Jeremy Allen White, who is actually going to be playing Springsteen in a film soon, could do a decent MK as well I'm sure.

We need actors though, not just lookalikes!

How about the guy who played Junior Soprano? Actually a talented musician!
