What will it be and when? Is there a realistic chance that Mark will be in the studio working on a new album in the spring of 2025? Certainly nothing will happen by the end of the year.
-
No idea about the economics, but my assumption would be that One Deep River actually lost money? Does this factor in to his thinking at this stage?
-
Lost money ? Why?

Even if he would be working on a new album, that would mean nothing. He would probably would fiddling around with Guy on mics and amps for the next three to five years...
I would recomment to release EP's every one or two years instead of albums all five years. Better to have three or four good songs than an album as boring as ODR again.

I would rather say that Mark has changed is product way more than our expectations...
-
When I wrote about our changing expectations I wasn't thinking about myself :)
-
Lost money ? Why?
‘Cause he spends a fortune recording and nobody buys records anymore.
-
Suspect we will get a smattering of new material which will take time to come to fruition interspersed with back catalogue from DS and MK. Odds on some kind of MK live boxset along to mirror the DS set at some stage. Along with the inevitable Music Fidelity / atmos mix / mastered by Bob Lidwigs second cousin vinyl releases of existing albums

That is a matter of opinion.
He must also consider his age and if he take another five years or so then 80 is an age when he may not want to be doing much promo or travelling in his condition.
I also wonder just how his playing is these days. Even on the last album there's a mistake on it and it wasn't exactly a one take recording!
-
I'd love it if he did something completely different. Him and Guy are great at conjuring atmospheres, and they could put together a brilliant ambient record or electronic soundtrack. No pressure on the guitar playing, singing etc.

Well, it sold quite a few copies, so that should cover the production costs at least.
BG costs a lot of course, but ideally it should more or less pay for itself now that covid is over and people can record again.
I don't think money is a factor at all to him when it comes to making a record.
-
Personally, I don't think we will see any more full scale projects, but I hope I am wrong. I think at this point if it were full scale, it would be already completed but unreleased works, or feature so little of what we all "expect" from an MK record in terms of him playing...

I know I am, we are in the minority but I don't want to live in a world without CD albums. Many artists are still releasing albums, and I hope that never changes.

Without concerts, I hope Mark will jump into a cycle of releasing albums every two years, maybe three.
What mistake? Tunnel 13 ?

Let's not forget that the last album was released 6 months ago :)
Mark has often said in interviews lately that he intends to record several albums. Without side projects (Going Home, LC Musical) it could be really soon.

imho his last album is his best.
there, now you know.
p.s. not trolling.

While thinking about it a while, and reading the lyrics once more, I really think he should do a book about all the themes he is thinking about instead of music. There is no musical development in ODR, most interesting about this whole ODR campaign were his retrospective, very personal lyrics, and, funny enough, all those podcasts he did where he could talk about all kind of things and about his past and history. He even said it himself that the music part is less important to him. His songwriting was also much better years ago from my point of view. So he HAS something to say still but should choose another channel, like a book or the radio programmes or TV shows with Brian Johnson he did. Honest opinion. No trolling also.

Well, it's boring to ME and I expected almost nothing.
It's a fine production, his voice still sounds great, the band and especially Greg play great, but the songs are all too similar, hardly worth of remembering, most of the lyrics apart from ODR and WMG have no impact or even meaning for me and the running order could have been much better instead if messing around with all this bonus here and there. Most important: no energy. All slow, dreamy, sleepy. It's nice to a certain extent but not all over the place. I didn't manage to listen to it as a whole evrn once!

I f-ing LOVE this Johnson/Knopfler collab. Easily the best thing Mark has produced lately, It's a pity it's always "too official" and barely accessible from third-world countries. I only managed to watch two episodes: Carlos Santana and Emmylou Harris. It's funny to watch Mark practically going back to his journalist roots. But those programs are great, interesting, funny, and rewatchable. I demand the second season!
Sure, everybody's doing interviews nowadays, and it becomes a little boring on its own, but damn, when it's done right, it's done right. Songs are not a new invention either ;D

I could not agree more. ODR is a very boring album. I have the same four tracks (out of the total 21) that I listen to. Those four are brilliant. I would prefer albums like this anyway, because if he released an EP every now and then, those EP´s could be filled with the "boring" tracks. With a release of lets say 12-20 tracks for that matter, chances are better that you can find a few you really, really like.

I'm a little pessimistic because, although his last record and ep were released earlier this year, they were finished betwen autumm-winter 2023, he is no touring anymore so he would had spent all these months since then at home writing, as far as he said thats the reason why he stopped touring (well, he also did promotion during two months more or less, but most of it in London, and some in Manchester) but when Guy was asked if there were plans to go to the studio to record with MK, he said not by now, which seems rare for me with such a prolific songwriter who stopped touring to have more time to write at home...
We all know there are other reasons why he stopped touring and although I think there is a chance we read they are recording earlier next year, or maybe even later this one, the idea that ODR and TB could be easily the last thing we have from him.
Yes, I know it's been a while since last time I posted but, there is nothing to post about really so I don't even know why I'm posting now... maybe I needed to express this odd feeling.

Even if he makes one album per year for the next ten years and sells none, he still wouldn't have to worry about having enough money for generations to come. It's not about the money.
But I do think we have reached the end station of his career. His playing is troublesome, to say the least. Musically, he hasn't been innovating for at least 15 years, and now he is also getting lazy with his lyrics. I still enjoy ODR enormously; it's much better than DTRW, which I consider to be his worst. Maybe I like it even more than Tracker.
Working with Guy as a producer/mixer hasn't made things more challenging. This is just a guess, but I would even say that working with Guy is influenced by his declining guitar skills, the enormous patience that Guy has, and the trust they have in each other. He can record a guitar part a hundred times with Guy until they get a take that doesn't suck. There were always mistakes (less prominent during the Dorfsman/Ainlay era), but based on the 2019 tour and later appearances, there are likely to be more takes with mistakes than without. You wouldn't work with Chuck like that; Chuck doesn't have time to record in that manner. I think ODR is a product of lots of compiling and overdubs.

Coincidentally, I'm working on this song rn... Do you mean a slightly (microscopically) awkward rake at 2:34? I thought it was not THAT bad. Can't really find other examples of something that I would even remotely call a mistake. A great song! I think this imperfect lick even gives a little live vibe to it.

Personally I noticed it first time I heard it and think it's very noticeable. Sounds awful. I honestly can't believe it managed to get released without anyone noticing. :smack

In my opinion, I think that most people here 'learned' to like pos 2008 MK's work.
We are always put MK's age, songwritting, studio, management, sales, personal life, production... in front of what matters. Wich is that MK's music lost his power.
The man is a genius and he can deliver good songs. Wich make fervorous fans able to feel glimpses from the past. So, we learn to like his recent stuff, in my opinion, only because of that.
This discussion always remeber the movie Midnight In Paris.
The Paris past was always better, but is Paris after all.

Mistakes are part to be a musician.
And it is good, indeed. Brings naturalitty.
If you look closer, ODR has many Mark's "mistakes".
I meant "mistakes" because Mark was, unfortunately, really struggling to play.
Even Mark's solo on Janine doesn't feel relaxed.
There is a lick on All Corners that has a clear "execution mistake" However, it was what Mark could play that day. And that's OK.
And I not spoke about Mark's hiccup on WMG.

Why do you pick 2008? I think his solo career has been pretty consistent. Some stuff I like more than others but it's all been much of a muchness.

KTGC, in my opinion, brought a "new" MK. Much more slow paced and much less flashy as a player.
The concerts started to be boring with stripped down songs.
Mark's guitar tone was very thin since then.
I remember people complaing about MK's concerts since 2005. However, to an audience perpective, MK's shows had a 'rock section' until 2006.
After that, every thought about Mark's concerts was: - Last tour was better.
I like Mark solo stuff just because that glimpse from the past.
It's consistent because Mark can deliver good songs. However, as i said months ago, in my opinion, Mark's music lost the WOW factor.

Not me. Post- 2008 period is probably my favourite of all his career, Dire Straits included. I love the inclusion of all the folk/celtic instruments.
With the obvious exception of DTRW, which is an album I very rarely go back to, I listen to Get Lucky and Tracker almost every day. The 2010 tour was probably his best, in my view. In 2013, I agree that his live playing lost some power, but I've always felt that that was also due to the change in the drumming department. I always thought Danny fitted MK's sound much better that Ianto.

At one point I still hope the musical soundtrack of "Local Hero" will see the light of day.
Hopefully Mark will make another album and if not it's also fine for me. Or Guy and Mark will clean up the vaults and relaese some unheard tracks from previous studdio sessions and leftovers from film soundtracks

You were SO enthousiastic after release and now it's boring? Mkay ::)
-
Yes indeed.
I wished it would be normal to not like stuff from MK and not be pointed at as if it was somehow wrong and one being on the wrong path of life only because he isn't orgasm about any little fart released from MK. We are always enthusiastic about new releases but time goes by and you maybe change your impression after the first wave of excitement has gone. :wave

Then actually it makes sense to release as many songs as possible, as if it was, say, a 12-song album that would be easy to dismiss altogether. I'll never buy the idea that from 24 (!!!) news tracks, a current/former MK&DS fan can't find a single song he'd love. So I totally understand this release strategy.
-
Lost money ? Why?
‘Cause he spends a fortune recording and nobody buys records anymore.
By the way, the entire album is up on YouTube for free. I have no idea how non-touring musicians are making money nowadays when their music is basically free. I think artists should've employed a strategy Radiohead tested back in 2007 with the "In Rainbows" album and pay-what-you-want thing. A lot of people would donate 10 bucks to download an album, especially in good quality. Or even without downloading at all. Anyway, the music business is fucked up beyond all repair for a long time.

I heard that Radiohead were actually very disappointed by how few fans chose to contribute a reasonable amount for that album.

Yes, I heard that too. They were way ahead of their time, I think, attempting something like this when CDs were still a thing and downloading music legally was a novelty. Today, everybody's accustomed to paying a fee for everything; even BMW makes people pay fees to get heated seats or something. It seems as though musicians will suffer from low streaming income and diminishing sales till the end of time, as the music business will never change.

I could be wrong but he may have struck a deal with the record company regarding the DS/MK box sets that came out in the lead up as well as all the press from the guitar sale, Like you say , the music business is stuffed, they would've known they'd make no money , I thought the strategy leading up to ODR was all quite clever really , no tour from MK but a bunch of stuff for the fans that want to buy it and likely to spend the money of 10 fans.
On another note, I'd be very surprised if he makes another full album, but you never know! I was impressed how they got his guitar playing to sound as it does on this album, and I can't imagine he's in any shape to still be playing.
I honestly feel as though he should release some individual tracks or smaller EP's , but I know he likes the process of a full album.

I simply believe that Mark does what he feels like doing because he can afford it and because he likes to experiment with the superb sound quality of his studio. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks as long as he has something to say with his songs. He simply lives life.

There will be another album, I'm pretty sure. He kept saying in interviews he will keep making records, I see no reason to believe otherwise.
Yes, he can't play guitar anymore, but that's not so much of an issue in the studio.

So, in summary, things change.

When he says he isn't interested in looking back, that's about DS reunions and releasing stuff from that period, not about his lyrics.
And he did keep playing until he fell over. Not literally, of course, but 2019 was as close as he could get.

Exactly! That's how I always understood it too. Plus always new songs not covers.

As we all know Mark has always been good in surprising us. I could imagine the idea of making a new album has already crossed his mind soon after he finished ODR. He can't help it, music is his life!
So let's sit back, have a good cup of tea ;) and wait what will come our way.
And in the meanwhile I will enjoy his vast catalogue of great songs incl. the gift of wonderful music of 2024 that I still listen to a lot.
-
I have no doubt whatsoever that Mark will release another album, he is constantly saying "I am a songwriter" so, that being the case, he will be writing new songs to release on a new album, not playing live should in theory mean he could release albums more often, he said he doesn't want the next album to take as long and that it should have more up-tempo songs, so, I am sure things are happening behind the scenes. And don't forget Henrik Hansen is STILL hard at work ::)
-

I keep forgetting about that. I wonder if it is still in the pipeline.

The guy is 75 and not in the best of health.
There is only one thing we can guarantee at this point.
I certainly hope for more new music from him.
-
I think MK will record a new album next year.
Maybe his last album.
After that, I think the next releases will be unreleased tracks and some compilations.
I think that the Henrik documentary was aleready burned.
I don't know if any LH recordings will see the light of the day.

I'd not be as sure about that. As the famous quote goes, man is mortal, but that would be only half the trouble. The worst of it is that he's sometimes unexpectedly mortal, and any album could be the last, just like any forum post, message or email. I'm not sure about longtime unfinished projects either. Better be late and great than be rushed and suck. Henrik's documentary on Tracker is one of the best album documentaries ever, in my opinion, so brilliantly shot.
Mark is lucky to have a master of this degree covering his life and it's gonna be a masterpiece whenever it's released! Local Hero is bigger than life also, musicals is such a nieche thing itself (how many of us actually seen it on stage? I think you can count people with two hands, maybe one). We'd be lucky to get something out of it as there's obviously not a lot of potential in money or marketing.
-
I'd love it if he did something completely different. Him and Guy are great at conjuring atmospheres, and they could put together a brilliant ambient record or electronic soundtrack. No pressure on the guitar playing, singing etc.
Completely different? At this stage? He's had the last 30 years to try something completely different. It's mostly been a variation on the same theme throughout his whole solo career. He's not going to move out of his comfort zone now.

Well, you never know. He's tried so many different styles over the years, from classical music on the Princess Bride to country, jazz and harder stuff. On every album, there were very different styles.
But, if he should actually do something "completely different", what could that be? Do you have anything specific in mind?

I would have loved a trio album from Mark (like the John Mayer Trio - awesome). Mark on vocals and guitar, Glenn Worf on bass and Ian Thomas on drums. Maybe Imelda May on backing vocals. No Guy Fletcher. Maybe the same producer that David Gilmour used on his last album. A rawer, less polished sound. Of course none of that will happen. Firstly, Mark is a man of habit and needs some constants in his life. Second, his guitar skills are so reduced now that he wouldn't be able to make a trio format work.
Something in this direction would have been awesome:

Mark isn't that hip.
Sad, but true.
Closer he got from this were on Privateering.

For me 2024 has been the year of MK😊first the show with Brian Johnson, an album, a ep, the guitar auction! Podcasts etc! So many great stuff it feels like a closure of a great career for me personally. I think ODR with the title track especially is a great swansong! It really touched me. Now that MK wont play live anymore and seems to be done more or less with the guitar, it does seems to me like 2024 was the last hurrah with the final album and lots of projects in general! I have a lifetime of songs to enjoy the rest of my life😊

Obviously, Mark and Ry have very different personalities, and I wouldn't want Mark to "act" any other way than he is naturally. What I was getting at, though, was the looseness and spontaneity in that Cooder clip. Mark showed a bit of that during the NHB gigs at Ronnie Scott's. I think at an earlier stage, before Mark's guitar skills declined and he frankly speaking got old, I think he could have pulled off such an album.

At this stage, we should be happy that he's still around and making music at all. I respect the fact that MK does whatever he wants, instead of chasing old glory and pretending he's still 29, like some of my other musical heroes do. His more recent albums are not quite to my taste, but I still enjoy some of the songs and get excited whenever he puts out something new. So let's enjoy the ride while we can.
And I have a feeling there will be more new music. He put out 25 songs this year, there's probably more in the can and/or in the works.

Welcome and I fully agree with you! :wave
That's exactly what I really appreciate about him, he stands with both feet on the ground and doesn't allow himself to be influenced by the zeitgeist. He just does his thing!
