I can't believe the only bad song in that record gets a Grammy nomination...

Bros at the Grammys woke up and realised there was a songwriter called Mark Knopfler. All these years and great songs went by and only NOW a Grammy? For Ahead Of The Game?
Pathetic is the name of the game.

Definitely 2024 is the year of Mark Knopfler. :clap

Excellent, but I agree that there have been better songs that have been overlooked from the past. Good news anyway! :clap

Just last night I gave the album another listen (or try) and there is this very small momentum in Ahead Of The Game, his voice and the way he sings "...sawdust on the floor" which have this song the absolute unique "MKness", if you know what I mean. Not about lyrics, not about guitar sound or solo, just THAT momentum rang a bell inside me. So this song indeed HAS something. And was chosen rightly as a first single. Love his vocals on this one. It's perfect for him.

I wonder if Mark will collect the prize. If he wins :D

I know exactly what you mean by that. I often feel the same way.
Suddenly there's something in the song that you didn't notice before and it grabs you.
That's the special thing about his music, you can spend your whole life with it and yet suddenly there's something you haven't heard before. Magical Mark! ;)

There are only two MK records that I thought at first listening that they were very good in its entirety, and these are "Get lucky" and "One deep river".
But from all the songs, I think the weakest is "Ahead of the game", the only one I would had moved to the bonus and put another one instead like "Chess" that I think is top quality.
Also I consider that the EP "The Boy" is very good from start to finish.

Just checked the Grammy list, because I thought it was for the album, not the song.
Once again, MK has managed to surprise me! Isn't it ironic that it's in the category of "American Roots Music"?
I mean, there's nothing American in the song (apart from some of the player and the strats, of course), and the bridge on the cover is very obviously not Brooklyn Bridge, but still he's perceived as American somehow. Mysterious, again... :lol
Edit: The other thing that mystifies me is that I don't know a single soul of all those other artists in the list. Maybe I'm not ahead of the game anymore ;-)

Last year's winner, Cast Iron Skillet by Jason Isbell, is a fantastic song.

That's a good one. And Jason is a confirmed MK fan. Still, crazy Mark won just 6 of them, and only 1 (one) for the song he wrote, all the rest are music videos, surround albums and collaboration tracks. I never thought about his music through awards, though. Music is its own reward!
"The Last Beatles Song" is also nominated, unfortunately. I doubt it'll win, though.

The Grammys are a load of crap, it’s voted for by record company insiders.
Doesn’t really mean anything, but can give exposure to smaller artists.

It's great That Mark has been given a nomination for anything in the music industry, however, a nomination for this song? really? it's a very ordinary song by Mark's standards. I'm not sure if any of his other solo era songs have been nominated for a Grammy in the past but, this seems an odd choice, maybe because for the first 4 months of this year Mark was everywhere in the press they though it was his time for another nomination!! It doesn't sound very American roots to me, maybe they didn't bother hearing the whole album.

Not really. I'm more surprised he was nominated in the first place.
