This gets played at the start of lots of hit tv shows, like South Park and Landman.

Do you think MK and Sting get a royalty from every episode?!

They sure do! And probably earn more money from a 1 second jingle stream than I make in a 1 hour guitar lesson :lol

Mark said in one of the recent interviews he's reviewing synchronisation licenses every day. Probably a contract or something.

Sting won’t directly get a royalty from it any longer since he has sold his entire back-catalogue and any future compositions to Universal’s publishing arm for a not insignificant lump sum, as a number of other artists have done. Where Mark is concerned, I guess that he would get a royalty from this and any other such use of his compositions.

On another note, I wonder if Mark would ever sell his back catalogue? Not sure why he would want to.

I'm assuming that none of us here are experts in this stuff (I'm certainly not), but there may be benefits in tax, estate planning etc, also probably just less hassle, someone driving up to your house with a dumper truck full of cash, rather than running a company that deals with the dribs and drabs every year.

Honestly, I think it makes sense... I can't imagine the "Knopfler estate" keeping rights to everything, maybe until MK falls over? Maybe he could sell just the Dire Straits catalog?

If Springsteen, Simon, Sting, Pink Floyd and even Dylan himself sell the rights, and these are one of the biggest and wealthiest "legacy" songwriters, it's the question of time.
