I wonder if, legally, they could get away with calling themselves Dire Straits?

I don't think so. If they could, whoever did the poster would have!

Well, there's a difference between them wanting to call themselves Dire Straits, and legally being allowed to do so. As far as I am aware all three are still good friends with MK so they wouldn't want to upset MK. Just be interesting to know if they could, if they wanted to.

I agree that they may not want to be called DS. That's why I wrote "whoever did the poster" would have done it if..... not "they"

BTW, I followed the link and saw the poster; Only John and Chris are mentioned, Alan
-
Without MK they will always sound only as a good tribute band. ;)

Information on the link posted by Allen doesn't mention Alan Clark (?)

I think MK and Alan are just on speaking terms, but not so friends as they used to be... Although Alan played with the NHB in Newcastle in 1993 replacing Guy, and if my memory serves, in the opening of the Shearer

I can't see where most of you read "John & Chris call themselves dire straits". The poster says "from the legendary dire straits" which is completely different. The discussion if John & Chris are allowed to call themselves Dire Straits is completely irrelevant. I doubt if they even think about it... Yes, John & Chris played together under Dire Straits but they don't pretend they ARE Dire Straits. So, what's the problem? :-\ It's just a reminder for people who don't know who John & Chris are, that's all. They don't "sell" it like a DS gig... come on... ::)
And people, don't forget, it's just a freaking poster. Enjoy the gig! ;D

we don't see that they call themselves DS anywhere. Dusty was just wondering if they could call themselves DS if they wanted.

Exactly. Just an interesting question. You get lots of disputes with bands going out and using names, look at Pink Floyd for one very big example, Roger Water wasn't happy about the others calling themselves that.

Or remember
Creedence Clearwater ReVISITED... ;D
