So good to have a pic from this one.
I have the bootleg from this gig,It is so perfect.A must have for everyone
-
Hm, I have a few pictures (from the web) which I though to be from the Old Waldorf gig, but Mark is wearing different clothes there (a red shirt). I have seen pics with this shirt before, too.
Well, I think they played two gigs a night there so both can be right of course.
You are brilliant in finding "new" old pictures it seems :)
-
A bit better in quality, and you might see the amp settings...
Where is it from, maybe it exists in better resolution?
-
You can find the image at http://www.corbisimages.com but the strange thing is that they say the picture is from 1 april 1979.
@ingo you can buy a better quality image at 2470px

Maybe that's because the second half of the latter show lasted after 00:00 on April 1st. :-)
But who's the extra drummer here? And is David sharing a mic with John?
-
John usually stood to the left of Mark, perhaps this is two images merged as is often done with a medium format camera that shoots 6x6 or square images. This would explain the "two" drum kits. Doesn't explain why David is there though, unless maybe he had a technical problem with his mic.
-
2 images merged together?
Looks like the left drummer is blad and maybe has a beard.
And is that even David? Looks like that guy has blond hair...?
-
Arrgs, I registered at Corbis and really was willing to pay to get the picture in high resolution, but they want 70,-

D'oh! Of course it's not. I just read David above it and quite often for panoramic shots a photographer will merge 2 images.
Well it was early and I was rushing to go to work!

Ingo, more info about the support act part? :P :P :P
-
To that other picture: They are obviously jamming with the support act, something they often did during the encores.
I see, kinda surprising to me.
Then how come (if my memory serves right) it isn't captured on any early bootlegs?
-
i was thinking the exact same thing bobo!
-
OK, maybe 'often' is not the best word here. I have no idea how often they jammed with a support act.
At least, on these pictures it was Barooga Bandit:
http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/barooga_bandit/barooga_bandit.html
I know that they also did a jam with Ian Gomm on the September '79 US tour.
Maybe they did not do a jam when they recorded the show for the radio like March 31, 1979, but the pics here are from the next day April 1 (according to Corbis), but you are right, I don't know of a bootleg on which we hear them doing this.

So we are missing a bootleg from april 1st? Should be cool to hear this. Always thought march 31st was the only date in Old Waldorf.

Interesting, I had the impression that MK wouldn't have been too eager to do something like this.
It still would be very interesting to hear one of these "jams".
There was a chapter in Palmers' book about Gomm I think, gotta reread that.

Can someone clarify why this thread is sticky ?
(just wondering) ;)
-
Something odd here. That's not Pick on drums either. Did I miss something?
-
Strangeeeeeeeee, mysterious stuff there! Have to say the pictures are heavily overpriced... I've vinyl bootleg from one of the shows of that tour (Philadelphia), for the DS fanclub of Hamburg.

I received the following email today from someone who seems to want to remain anonymous:
I joined just to make a comment about a picture from the 1979 Dire straits concert, someone asked who the second drummer is- it's a guy named Franz DeRaad, he played with Barooga/Barooga Bandit, is from my home town and that pic showed up on my Facebook homepage,
(Also mentioned by Ingo here (http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=977.msg17390#msg17390).)

Look at this poster:
and another date 09-march-1979?
http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/barooga_bandit/barooga_bandit.html (http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/barooga_bandit/barooga_bandit.html)
sorry to bring this up again but if the 31-march-1979 show was a soundboard, you can think that the other dates were soundboard recorded maybe too?
At least we van listen to 31 march here: http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/dire-straits/concerts/old-waldorf-march-31-1979.html (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/dire-straits/concerts/old-waldorf-march-31-1979.html)
