Smashing idea. And if anyone can give me any clues as to what sort of gear I'd need (bit of a novice with this stuff) I'll give bootlegging a go myself...

Mini disc / dat / digital recorder & good microphones (Schoeps looks like one that is very used)

I hope someone more into this could give you a clue.

The idea is adding the recordings that are available and the most part of it are shared in torrents, as it was last tour, actually I don

I also like the idea of having all the torrents who are available in one thread or list! ;D

Now and then I see a link of a torrent in a thread. I don't have my computer up to date yet, so it might be difficult to find them back again if they are everywhere at the forum! ::)

Mark Knopfler
2010-04-17
Pantages Theater
Hollywood, CA

Recorded By:

Robert Mullen (lvrwm)

Equipment/Lineage:

Audience/SP-CMC-25 mic's (Croakies)>SP-SPSB-1 (Battery Boost Box w/ Bass Roll-Off at
95Hz)>Sony PCM-M10>CDwav editor for tracking>TLH flac level 8.

Recorder Settings:

PCM-M10 at 44.10kHz/16bit,low mic sensitivity, manual record, limiter on, mic power
off, low cut filter off, speed control off.

Comments:

Here is Mark and his bandmates on a saturday night in Hollywood. We had seats in the
mezzanine, toward the stage left speaker stacks. Nice clear sound from this location
at this elegant venue. This was the first time using the PCM-M10, and the results are
excellent. The recorder itself was very easy to operate, and the limiter really helped
to reduce the clapping at the end of each piece. The crowd around us was well behaved,
though there were some very excited people at other locations in the venue and add
well to the "feel" of the show (IMHO). Enjoy!

I have my recording from Temecula.  Sounded good. I've been playing it all day. I'm working on  the glitches on my tracker so I can upload it.  pamplina is assisting me at the moment.  Can't wait to share.  Complete in a sense except for when "piper" started and I rushed myself to the front and lost my recording.

I also managed to capture the most incredible moments of Mark on video during "piper" not very long , but OMG, I've never seen Mark quite like that before.  Totally awesome !!!!!!!!!

Be patient I'm working on uploading it to Youtube and will post a link .

Is youtube the best place for me to post the vid?

It was on markknopfler.com (the one that has the Get Lucky bonus site etc). Some-one else on the forum there also mentioned they had recorded the Phoenix show, but I don't think that one has been shared.

Maybe we can send him a private message and see if he/she is going to share it  ;)

Yes I did, Pottel.  But only one:  Santa Rosa.   The Sultans of Swing track is corrupted and I have to work with it, and Border Reiver has some awful distortion before I got the sound turned down.  From my spot there was heavy bass.    Since there is another version, I didn't know if mine would be wanted, but if it is, I'll upload.

Guy's Forum:

I LOVED the new arrangement on *****.... perfect for a small intimate concert such as last night. Whose idea was it to change the arrangements? And any plans of rearranging other DS classics?

Which song does he means? Maybe So Far Away in the 86 style? ;) A couple of concerts ago, the short intro was like that...

Is there a recording of the chicago show? I want to know which song got the new arrangement...

So would I!    My favourite live recording of BIA is from Toronto 2001 and I would love to hear it played like that again.   I am always underwhelmed these days by BIA in concert.  Sometimes it seems quite clumsily played.

Mark does need some new material for his band introductions. He also says, in a surprised tone of voice, that Matt Rollings is learning the accordion. All I can say is that Matt must be a slow learner as he has been playing accordion on stage since the 2005 tour.

ingrid,

Good for you !  Mark probably won't point his finger to the woman.  He's too much a gentleman to do that. I think.  Give it a try.  We'll be curious to know.

Well I remember he did point the finger of death at some woman at the Frankfurt concert in 2008... The poor woman had no clue what she was doing wrong. It was during STP when she was trying to take some pics with her cell phone which unfortunately had a really bright flashlight...
A friend of mine had a similar cell phone and I have to admit those lights are really disturbing. Nonetheless, the lady was pretty confused, apologised to MK and switched the phone off.

he is no stand up comedian, and as much as i am bored of the introductions, and jokes, it is as guy just said in reply to a question, the shows are not meant for "get-a-lifers" (that last one is my translation of what he said)
i mean, there are not too many who are funny and different every night, leo kottke comes to mind but again, only very few...come on folks, i want him to play brilliant guitar, not make funny jokes.

Oh no, they did pat-downs for MK? It's still not that hard to get the gear in with that security, but ugh...it's just annoying. It's also a bit classless given the caliber of an MK show and the kind of venues he plays in. Oh well.

They went through the motions but nothing too serious.  The security that check my wife's purse saw the gear and told us to enjoy the show.  He either didn't know what he was looking at or was looking for something else. My wife and I talked about it while we waited and wondered if they were looking for video gear and the "larger" cameras.

No mp3 please.   Can you compress to flac?    See dbpoweramp converter or flacfrontend.   Both free.
Flac will compress wav files without loss.   mp3 lose the high and low end.
Thanks!

the file will be wav originally, use something like Audacity (just one example) to cut up the songs, then convert to flac, using dbconverter (for example, trader's little helper is also good)

I really hope somebody else managed to capture this unique show.

I have e-mailed my friends who took these photo's I posted to ask if they recorded the show because they usually do.  They are resposible for very kindly sending me copies of Glasgow 13.09.91 and 20.07.01 which I then circulated years ago.  I think they were going to the RAH so may be without computer access for a while but I WILL find out because I too am deperate for a recording of this show!

Possibly, but I didn't ask them.  They are avid fans and attend many concerts and record most of them but are not into trading or forums in general.  That's up to them and I respect that.  It's simply like a document of their night (like a photograph) and I really appreciate the fact that they gave me these two recordings.

My favourite, soundwise is Buffalo (28 April), but "Cleaning my Gun" wasn't played at that one. My favourite version of "Cleaning" is from Denver (20 April).

:) Hi Dusty. The absoloute high point for the tour IMHO is the 30 second extra extended solo in Hill farmer's Blues including the licks from the TOL solo (3:21 to 3:28), from Ann-Arbor theatre on 27th April. But for over-all concert including CMG I'd have to go for the Denver recording.  :D

Record the shows that you'll go to, sirs.  We can share aud recordings on the tracker, and the official ones are lossy.  And I'd love to have the aud and SBD both, to enjoy and appreciate the atmospheres of the stage and the audience group.

We're deliberating of allowing audience recordings from the officialy released shows, but we have to consider the pros and cons.

Good news that audience recordings will still be allowed. In some instances these can be more enjoyable than those from the soundboard, as you get more feeling for the exitement of the audience. So well done guys and a big thank you to all those who record and share. Don't quite know why, but I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Bournemouth.

edit - just read this disappointing news on KnopflerTK
"All the shows from the Get Lucky tour starting on May 30, 2010 and so on will be sold officialy on the site http://simfylive.com. So all this shows are considered OFFICIAL STUFF as set on the site rules.
Alternative audience recordings of these shows, although they aren't strictly official stuff, WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE KNOPFLERTK. We take this rule because we do not want to interfere with the official sales, that we think are a good initiative for the fans. It's possible that the audience recordings could be allowed in the future.
The video recordings of these shows WILL BE ALLOWED by general rule, whenever they include only the original audio track from the video camera."

Silly I think, the audience recordings are no substitute for an official and will not interfere with sales.

Presumably the audience bootlegs of the shows that made up Alchemy and On the Night will now also be banned?

I'll be happy with a couple of the official recordings but I know others will want every show and maybe can't aford to buy 30 official shows. I guess they'll just go to Dime instead.  :-\

Again I agree with you Dusty. I collect all shows, but I won't buy them all. I already bought May 30th (it seems May 31 and June 1 will not be available). Before I was home from the UK I was thinking about buying the download of May 30 and the stick from May 31. But May 31 is not for sale (yet). The next I will buy will be one of the shows I am going to as well. But buying 30 x EUR 15 = EUR 450 is a little bit over the top. But I still want to listen to them.  :(

I wonder how long this stuff will be available? I asked PC about it on sunday (I indeed did...  :o) and his answer was funny: "Well, probably forever, which
means for two weeks at least..." or something like that... I think I want Hamburg in every case, because that is my next show (as I mentioned earlier several times now...,), but when the tour is over I like to have a look which concert is rated the best one maybe or download two or three alternative ones, maybe with changed setlists. So let's hope this stuff is available at least for 2010... Any experiences with this anybody?

According to the new rule, recordings of the gigs before 30 May can still be posted on the tracker and I don't think any other torrent site has implemented this policy, so recordings can be posted elsewhere.

Apart from Birmingham, I haven't seen recordings from the UK or Ireland anywhere else. Hope this means they are just taking their time to appear rather than there aren't any to be had.

However I think I read that Pottel has recorded Bournemouth, so hopefully we can look forward to hearing that one once he has finished his residency at the Royal Albert Hall and his RAH recordings via dime or somesuch site.

To be honest I can't understand the sound of this and other threads about audience recordings in the last days. We have now phantastic and complete
live recordings from this tour, more than enough to choose from, and there is a good chance for the people from now on to buy "their" very own visited show. So why is anybody around angry about not being able to download crappy audience recordings? Of course an audience recording from the self same night is forbidden. I did not expect anything else! Are we such a bunch of greedy folks around here that there is never enough for us to get? OK, a bluray or DVD of this tour would have been nice, but this amount of live recordings is much better and better done than the passalong thing back in 2005, so we shouldn't cry about lost audience recordings!

Just my opinion!

I do agree with you LE however I can understand the point of view from others too. People collect all shows. But as you have read all, in the future it's probably allowed to upload the recordings of those nights. Just for now, when it's on sale it's not allowed. That's what I understood from it.

Thank you so much LE, my thoughts exactly! Maybe the reason for all this greediness is that some fans now can't show off anymore with their oh-so-brillliant self made recordings? I guess you have to stick to the rules now, oh no!  ;D Now all we need is someone who takes official pictures at concerts and the whole "can I bring my camera in/Finger-of death" thing would become redundant too. Apocalypse for some people, relief for others. Taking pictures distracts you from enjoying the show - I certainly was distracted. And even though I managed to take some really good ones, I couldn't even remember if MK played STP because I was busy with my camera...
So, to cut a long story short, I'm glad they take the "burden" from us and release all those live concerts in brilliant quality. And I'm now waiting for an official photographer. I'd volunteer btw  ;D

I certainly won't be downloading any audience recordings now that we have soundboards (except maybe US shows, which were different), but I believe in freedom of choice and that those who want to download audience recordings should be able to do so. There is no way that somebody will fail to buy an official show because they already have an audience recording, no way.

So why ban it?

Starting to feel sorry that I mentioned this now (but then if not me, some-one else would have  :)).

The thing is, audience recordings have not (yet) been outlawed by the management. It's just that KnopferTK have decided not to put them on their tracker while the Simfy recordings are being sold. There are plenty of other torrent sites that people can use if they want to share the recordings they have made, so it's not that people can not download audience recordings (crappy or not - and some really are very good), it's just that they wont be able to get them from the Spanish Tracker for now.
Title: Re: Recordings from this tour

I think they ban it to prevent us from not longer being allowed to record. You remember 2008 when the finger of death appeared. Maybe it was not only that MK wasn't happy with it. Last years a couple of fanmade-DVD's appeared in official shops as if it was an official release. So if they now don't allow to upload/download recordings MK and management feels sure that sales are not affected by unofficial recordings.
And when we have them later it's fine by me as well. I bought the London one already and I am sure I will buy a couple more from coming dates. But I wait till after the shows, I will not pre-order them, because some setlistchanges will influence the decision of what show I will buy.

And it's also a kind of wanna have it  ;D
I am very happy with these official recordings and as soon as it's allowed I will download the fanmade recordings as well, just to complete the collection. I hardly listen to them, at least not all of them.

The Prague show is on presale and that means there's 99.99 % chance of a release.
The remaining 0.01% is bad luck.
Better have your own recording, just in case.  ;)
The most important thing is that you enjoy the show  ;D

The knopflerTK's decision is very smart (yes it is !) and logical.
It's the only option to avoid any copyright consequence - even if for the real fans it makes no difference (we will buy anyway).
I like the video/audio paradox though. It adds some spice.  ;)

There is no copyright consequence of uploading audience recordings. They are not the same recordings. There would only be breach of copyright if the official recording was being made available for download.

If ever the Simfy sales were disappointing, I'm pretty sure the majors would blame the tracker.

I have too fully agree with you on this one, Dustyvalentino; even though I could also agree that being legally and morally right does not necessarily means that you won't run into troubles, in this sad world.
Well, your Honor, the defense would like to call a witness - and not your average witness:
"I am against this lawsuit. It was said TV would be the end of cinema, it was said tapes would kill records and CD burners would kill CD's, but that's not true. Technology will always progress. The only real danger comes from countries which practise industrial piracy. I've always encouraged the recordings of my concerts. From the stage I had fun seeing all those little red lights of recorders and these microphones hold by fans. That's no danger and even quite cool. Fans who buy bootlegs already own all the official albums anyway. They do us no harm and I find these raids against bootlegs shops ridiculous." exactly, i do not see the point of making fan made recordings available besides the official ones. i mean, the people that are in danger of not buying the official ones because a fan one would exist, are not the people that would find their way to the spanish city tracker, so the ones that do make it there are the ones that already buy all the official stuff anyways.

i will keep on recording, and yes, clearly an audience rec. is not the same as an official one.
but with a decently made audience one, i enjoy the "live feeling more"
also, where does it say Spanish city will not allow? i only read they were debating it?

I think that not putting on th etracker aud recording from nights officially released is the good thing to do for now.
This our way to show that we are plently supporting Mark's effort to provide his live music to us.

And I hope that this non-eu restriction will be quickly solved; otherwise our overseas friends will not have other solution to bypass this stupid decision.

Strange that the "recording industry" is so strong to turn what should be a win-win situation to lose-lose, they are just insane people  >:(

As aud recording is still allowed by PCM management keep recording for yoursel or for future share.
They different experience.

I think it's not illegal if I buy an extra flashstick and send it overseas!
Or I buy an extra show, burn it on CD and send it overseas?
What do you think?

Others than European want to have this stuff as well. If I am in the US I buy some CD's most of the time. But I never wonder if it's legal or not. When it's not available in European shops and I am in the US and buy it, I never thought about it as illegal. Just not available here, so I buy it somewhere else.

Am I a criminal now?  ???   :'(

I don't know, I am not an expert on international laws.

But for example in France you are not authorized to import oversea released DVD of movie that are still on screen and specialized shops that do so are facing fine if caught.

France is a bad example. Nothing is authorized anymore since we have a little corporal again.  :disbelief

I think that maybe the tracker could allow all those shows that are not being offered as soundboards (it means all the RAH shows except the first one).

I should mention it to the moderators teams, and see if thats ok, as it looks like the own RAH make it difficult to release more staff to the Simfy Live people.

Many good points discussed here.  I agreed with dusty regarding the freedom of choice in the market place.  I'm shocked that knopflertk decided to ban audience recordings.  Maybe we can petition that ?

I'm so thrilled that we can download official stuff.  Like ingrid said there are many get a lifers (me included) who want to collect every show that's available.  It's just that important.  Even if all the official are made available including NA, they will be quite costly to buy them all.  IMO< they should offer discount package, say, the more shows you download, the more discounts you get.
Title: Re: Recordings from this tour
Post by: ds1984 on June 05, 2010, 11:56:48 PM
I think that the purpose of these release is first to allow people that attend a particular show to go back with THE show they attended, not to collect them all, although the die-hard MK fan we are will eventually end with all of them.

I know that ABB are releasing limited edition boxes with full run of their shows but they does not sound quite cheap.
And they are able to play 3 or 4 shows (generally lasting over 2h30) in a row with only very few songs played twice or more...

Simfy gets a 10 for recording quality but 7 for actual satisfaction

Sounds are totally fake (it's called Raw Soundboard), especially in some songs

Most audience recordings are better from this point of view

I hope many more European audience recordings will come out

This is a point of view I can not agree to. Silly to say these recordings were "totally fake". What can be done by any artist to please somebody like you?

I don't understand what you mean by "fake"? I think the soundboards sound great and I'm pretty anal retentive when it comes to this stuff. Of course I wish they offered them in FLAC format, as SimfyLive has that option, but whatever...

No insulting intended from this side, only an opinion. So what is "crappy" then? I am a technically illiterate, so maybe you could explain it, Pensaboy. For me they sound great, nothing to complain about Simfy from my side! ("Discussion" includes different opinions and debating about them.)

I went to the 1st  nights, and imo the 2nd night was the best :)
I'm still holding out for it to be released on the usb sticks, but not sure if only the 1st night is being released.
I know Pottel taped it, cos i was sitting next to him while he was. ;) ;D

Simfy sounds good to me but I'm interested to hear Pensaboy's point of view.

Tell us why you think they sound fake please. :)

Remember, here at AMIT people are free to express their opinion, even when it is wrong, like Pensaboy. ;)

Hmm, the guitar sounds pretty good to me. His amp has a mic in front of it which feeds the house PA and Simfy, of course it's never going to be exactly the same as being there but the extra detail and better quality vocals are what appeal to me about soundboard recordings.

Actually you hear more of the instruments at the Simfy recording than at the frontrow  ;D
You all know sound is better a little more back in the venue.

Your (and everybody else's)  ears are a very unique "sound recording system" -- recording a concert technically contains always many --- DECISIONS. One has to put all the single tracks of the single mics together, that's however the way I explain it to myself. If there is a recording of a show, you CAN'T expect to have the same sonic experience than you had on the live experienced show itself... There is never THE ultimate recording of something... The sound guy however should try to reach a result that is as close as possible to the event itself. That is how I see it.

For me, it sounds great. I agree however that the remixed stuff on the 1988 sampler, including a very bad "Twisting By The Pool" sounds bad. I think MK has done the remixing himself and has learned a lot from those days. The only reason to buy that record was the alternate version of "Where Do You Think You're Going"...

I did already mention this problem in another post.

In a few words, sound is Ok but not the mix. And I already read here the bad effect of it : someone that did not attend a show but only heard it through Simfy recording did get false impression of how it actualy sounded.

I know it is fairly early in the european leg of the tour, but I find it interesting that audience recordings seem to have completely dried up. Only 2 available for download anywhere. Is this because of the Simfy thing?

Are people still recording but no longer sharing (as far as I know only KnopflerTK have decided not to host audience recordings from the shows covered by Simfy), or are people just not recording from the audience knowing that they can get a soundboard recording much more easily?
