My prejudices have battled to the front of my psyche. I'm definately in the camp that thinks that this band is abusing an old relationship and hoodwinking the general public. Sorry.

Removed image due to the frailties of some members who dont seem to acknowledge the whole stench of foul play with this "tour" and band "rebirth"

From the Swiss website:

A touch of Dire Straits at the Summer Sound!
With more than 120 million albums sold among the British rock band Dire Straits most successful artists of all time. The three ORIGINAL MEMBERS Alan Clark, Phil Palmer, and Chris White together with four other high-profile musicians, the band The Straits. Together they perform the opening act of Anastacia for the first time in 20 years, the greatest hits of Dire Straits. An experience which you must not miss!

"The three original members, Alan Clark, Phil Palmer and Chris White" ?? -     What about Mark, John, David and Pick, weren't they the original members?

The whaaat? So I guess all those songs MK (or maybe I should say "they", but that's another topic) wrote must be crappy, because they are now only good for opening acts.... wth??

So this is where all those hits evolved, into an opening act!! Whaaat... I wonder what MK thinks about this... someone's opening act...  wth...

I have a very different point of view, and I think all you know (and probably are tired of, considering the tolerance showed by many of you about this).

My point of view is that they ARE NOT Dire Straits, they are a band formed with three former members playing, with other musicians, the songs they used to play with Dire Straits, and they decided to call themselfs The Straits. Its not a bad name for a band who play Dire Straits songs, specially when three of them play with them. There are cover bands with names more close to the real one, and you know that bands...

It happens that they played a show at the RAH and it was almost full of people VERY aware that the were not DIRE STRAITS, and they were very HAPPY to listen the hits MK doesnt wants to perform, and being played but three of the musicians that already played them. I guess they enjoyed the show because they dont know this forum and are not able to embrace the REAL TRUTH that many of you show here (mode ironic off)

I think that the fact of talk about from the comfort of your home is very different that talk about it when you actually saw the band, saw the RESPECT they show to MK himself during all the show, and the care they put playing the songs for the fans.

And I do think that its a real and very good chance to people that never attended to a Dire Straits show to see Alan, Chris and Phil playing live. At least it was to me. But I

I think it was meant to have said "Three members of the original band", but once again, ambiguity.......  :-\   Or something was lost in translation!    ;)

After a charity concert, The Straits are now officially a farce with this european tour.

Legally they are a cover band so there's no legal breach.

No legal breach, no, but there are things happening "out of the legal" to try to minimize the Straits presence...

But we all know they are not a real cover band

Moreover I have listened to the very good recording jbaent provided us
and I must say that while the overall band is excellent
the lead guitar is totally unlistenable which makes the overall experience pretty bad, at least to me.

Several real cover bands have better guitarists.

They are a really excellent "half-band", I

Agreed. I don't have any problem with people making a living playing live music.

If anyone is stupid enough to confuse "The Straits" with "Dire Straits" then they deserve to lose their money IMO.

The only thing I disagree with is the way they tried to say that they were only getting together for a "one-off" charity gig, when thatwas clearly never the plan. Very misleading and dishonest IMO.

My guess is they didnt have faith in that the project will have success...

Actually, I was expecting some boo at the RAH, but I was very surprised and amazed by the reaction of ALL the RAh audience during the show. That probably encouraged them to try to do more shows. When you see that what you are doing makes happy so many people maybe it worths to keep doing it.

I doubt very much that a few shows is a way to earn a life, they are proffesional musicians, to play just three summer dates doesnt looks like earn a living.

I'd say "Dire Strats" is far more misleading than "The Straits", if that matters...

Basically the problem here (for some of you) is that members of Dire Straits play Dire Straits songs in a band? Think about that for a second... it's absurd!

I would not do that. The debate is here so no need to put oil on fire on Guy's forum, moreover that he already expressed his wish on that matter.

We should assume that if everybody are here for the love of the Mark Knopfler music, there are strong different point of view of how about the legacy of his music, the Dire Straits era especialy, can be used. But in the end we should pass over them.

I had the chance to talk with many of the members of the band, and they were very sad because MK was not happy about it. I really thing they respect a lot what the band was and this is their way to show that respect, offering to the fans that are still there the chance to listen to that songs that Mk doesnt wants to play anymore (I think Alan stated something similar in his site).

By the way, this thread must be moved to "Almost Straits" as well.

Guy strikes me as a complete Internet forum nerd! I mean how many other professional semi-famous musicians bother to update and answer on their own Q&A consistently?
I reckon he reads every word on AMIT and that's why he's so cryptic with his answers most of the time (so he doesn't give the game away). Wasn't there some recent thing where some of you thought he must've read something or other?

Anyway, Hello Guy!!! You probably DONT lose much sleep, but I bet you get a laugh reading our rubbish!?
Get a lifer indeed. :)

Oh, no comment on The Straits. It's getting real old, but I do enjoy reading everyone's opinions! ;D At least Alan Clarke isn't sh!tting on my lawn, ha ha!

Agree that the arguments are mostly being re-hashed now, this thread seems to a carbon copy of the other one.

Maybe we should have a poll of AMIT members, to see who thinks "The Straits" is a good thing and who doesn't?

Also, can somebody link to where GF said that MK himself was "disappointed"? Must have missed that. I know GF himself said he didn't approve of the name, but otherwise wished them good luck.

which had the news about the RAH charity show
has eventually cancelled the news even if news back up to 2008 are still there ;)

Wow. That a piece of news from Mark's official news page is retracted is pretty radical. Someone is not happy about something.

Ssssttt!!!!!! Jackal!   Shut off.....  or Slavi will "inform Guy how some of MK ''fans" are trying to put fuel and make intrigues using his words and believe me he would NOT be happy at all"

Slavi ... can you please respect all opinions?

Nothing personal.. It's Just that I can't believe my eyes when I read your post.

And really... is it so surprising that "from Mark's world someone (or for sure Mark himself) is not happy about something?"

The Straits bring live on tour (sure for charity...) his music and he's disappointed?  Oh... what a ungrateful person you are Mr. Knopfler...

The only thing I disagree with is the way they tried to say that they were only getting together for a "one-off" charity gig, when that was clearly never the plan. Very misleading and dishonest IMO.

Hey Slavi...
Will you pls ask to Mr. Chris White about it ?

I won't...because it is fiddling imho and he is not responsible about the website  :disbelief

@Pensaboy & Dusty - TK always removes ALL information conected with other musicians ( Pensa Day, some Italian gigs with John, Alan and Chris etc) when they are not actual already because it's not about MK...
