-
Great idea this tour, will brighten up the dark and cold months of October and November!
-
:) Nice work LE.
I have given the thread a priority "sticky" position at the top, and marked it "Spoiler ahead" in case there are those who don't wish to know the set lists before their own concert.
-
I will put up some info online, hope it will do after some (or a lot of) pints ;D
Be patient, I should have free internet in my hotel and bring my i-pad so hopefully it works out.
Looking forward to Dublin, leaving tomorrow morning. Keep fingers crossed no long delays will bother my flight. I will arrive at 13.40 in Dublin if all goes well so enough sparetime for shorter delays.
-
Let's see what happens tonight! Maybe a new song or two? Would be nice to see if they're on stage together. ;D
Anyway, for me it's Knopfler-time. Next week David, week after Mark! ;D

Good to see he didn't drop that song! I wanted him so much to play it at my gig last tour but I guess luck wasn't on my side that night! Anyway I wish everyone a good time, hope you enjoy every little bit of this great music!

Mk 1 hr then 1/2 uur break. Setlist why aye man, cleaning my gun, new song city or so. STP, towlaw, new song: private theory, Sonny liston, bonaparte, marbletown, speedway.
New songs good especially private theory. Speedway way better with Danny. You can put this online if you like. Love Ingrid

No DS songs in this particular tour with BD?
My total respect and admiration to you Mark.... incredible.... what an artist....
Obviously all Dylan fans don't know his solo stuff....and this fact don't mean anything to this true genius.... wonderful....
and someone of Dylan fans said that he's pure mainstream....

10 songs. Not bad

Wasn't 'Privateers' a left out b-side from Get Lucky...??

I am happy with this list. However I am sure that we will see some differences in the next few days - they always experiment more in the early stages of a tour. Happy to see Cleaning My Gun (my guess for the opening song - close!), Hill Farmer's Blues AND Sonny Liston, a song I also guessed in an earlier post... ::), so it is close to my dream list! But no Sultans! Maybe he skipped it forever...
And about Speedway - I think it should be fair to give Ian a little time to get into it - if he knows the song when they arrive at Oberhausen it will be fine with me! ;D
LE

Why does mark hate DS? Lol!!! ;D
Nice set, thanks Ingrid and BBB!

HA HA good one!
You are not serious, are you? Marbletown was obviously the high point of the last tour. But of course taste is different, but just wondering... :)
You also do not like STP and Sonny also? Please remember two new songs! It could have been worse. I was thinking that Sultans, Romeo and Brothers alone
would have stolen 30 minutes from the set.

LOL, good one! Bwahaha, WOL... It has become slower and slower over the years, MK would fall asleep playing it. Speaking of it, anybody know if he plays seated?
Glad he didn't play Brothers in Arms, it's really overplayed. Would have been nice to hear Sultans, though. About STP, I love that one, but for some odd reason, IMO, it never worked live. Can't say why...
Haha, that setlist is going to piss lots of DS fans off ;D

It seems obvious now that this setlist is a taster of Marks solo work for Bobs fans.
Just hoping we get a roaring version of I&I, Slow Train Coming or Industrial Disease in the encore now! :-\

Marbletown was great. Twitter doesn't work now. Have to be online to much to allow new people to follow. Will post here when something happens. Don't have unlimited internet abroad so being online continuously cost me too much ;-) speak to you later

Border Reiver is the best opener since DTTW.
And for the "diluted" song my choice would go for CE.
1996 version was top notch.
1979 OUTTITW and early 2008 Marbletown were best live versions imho.

It will be longer by tomorrow... I want to know a lot of things... What were the new songs like? Which guitars used on them? How was the Dylan audience reacting to Mark? Was the 30 min changeover running smooth? Was MK talking a lot and referring to Bob? and so on...

No sharing the stage! Nice "surprise". :'(
Or maybe, Mark had to visit the toilet facilities just as the encore started? When you gotta go, you gotta go.
-
well Mark could have gone in one of two ways with the setlist and he has decided to go the solo direction and leave the ds stuff at home.Yes slightly disappointing that different ds songs not played recently didn't come out.Still 2 new songs to look forward to can't be bad.Don't really understand MK's motivation to travel around Europe to play for an hour each night at this stage in his career.Hey,but I am glad he has.
-
Nobody has said much about the new songs. How are they? Tempo? Topic?
-
Isaac's first blog entry is online:
http://blog.isaac.shabtay.com/2011/10/concert-day-o-dublin-ireland-october-6.html?spref=tw
So the first new song seems to be another Les Paul "rocker", and new song number 2 is called "Privateering" (Isaac is definite about this) and is played
with an acoustic layout and with Uillean Pipes - Isaac called the second song "an amazing dramatic piece (in C minor)".
This only for the ones who won't go to read the blog. So I believe him about the song title. Quote: ("Remember that name.
-
Privateering. Could be "Private Earing" also. Couldn't it? :lol :lol
Private peering with Tina Turner and Jeff Beck on second guitar.
-
Thanks to Wikipedia.
A privateer is a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign shipping during wartime. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having to spend public money or commit naval officers. They were of great benefit to a smaller naval power or one facing an enemy dependent on trade: they disrupted commerce and pressured the enemy to deploy warships to protect merchant trade against commerce raiders. The cost was borne by investors hoping to profit from prize money earned from captured cargo and vessels. The proceeds would be distributed among the privateer's investors, officers and crew. It has been argued that privateering was a less destructive and wasteful form of warfare, because the goal was to capture ships rather than to sink them.[1]
-
So another maritime related song.
I love his songs related to ships & the sea.
Looking forward to hearing it.
Cheers. BBB

Woaw exciting thread!
I'm somehow convinced that MK saw this tour as a perfect opportunity to play some shows without bringing up the oldies. Is it a good thing? Well, I like the songs of both worlds, but things have changed (Dylan reference! ;-)) as MK has been writing so many new songs and the new material deserves to be played. One new song seems to be a rocker which is a great thing, because my concern that MK would stick to quiet folky songs in the future turned out to be unfounded.
There may be something interesting in the pipeline: imagine the new album comes as a deluxe edition containing a live release from this tour in addition to an interview DVD?!
-
Privateering. Could be "Private Earing" also. Couldn't it? :lol :lol
Private peering with Tina Turner and Jeff Beck on second guitar.
Well apart from the pan intended references to all the related MK songs containing "Private", I guess this is a new song from the soundtrack "Private peaceful" that he has been working since March.
-
Any info about the merchandise?? ???

Isaac's first blog entry is online:

Isaac says that Mark played the Danelectro with a slide. No Les Paul I think, but still sounds good to me!
-
And no Simfy, right?
-
Don't really understand MK's motivation to travel around Europe to play for an hour each night at this stage in his career.Hey,but I am glad he has.
Huh? What do you mean by saying that? MK's a musician who loves to play. 70 minutes is better than nothing. To him too. ;)
Great setlist, by the way. Glad he skipped the usual Straits cover songs. If some of you still miss them, you could always join a Straits concert:lol (But of course he could have dug out some hardly-never-before-played DS oldies. That would have been fun.)
Any pics from the show? I'm a bit curious about the cyan coloured Les Paul, ref. Isaac. And MK's shirt, of course ;)
I'm not attending any of the Dylan-shows (the first MK-tour I skip since I discovered MK in the 80ies), and that's of course due to him not coming to Norway this time. (His Bobness had some shows here in July or August, so I guess he ended his 2011 Norwegian Tour then.) But my Dylan-loving uncle and his wife (my ant) was at the show in Dublin, so I'm looking forward to hearing from them soon.
(By the way: Hi, everyone! Cool to see you all again!)

I have to say that I am surprised to see Cleaning My Gun in the setlist. Quite a groovy tune, and played infrequently on the GL tour.
It was played at the first European concert in Dublin on the GL tour last year. I was there and it sounded great, but later Coyote took its place at most other gigs. Maybe it will be alternated with Coyote on this tour too. I hope so, because I love Coyote and want to hear it in Manchester on Monday! ;)

Isaac's first blog entry is online:
So the first new song seems to be another Les Paul "rocker"
Isaac says that Mark played the Danelectro with a slide. No Les Paul I think, but still sounds good to me!
According to Isaacs blog:
What was, however, strange and new was the guitar Mark was holding. It

Hey everyone!!!
For me, the concert was a slight disapointment......not becuase mark played badly or anything but becuase the setlilst was basically half of the get lucky tour and two new songs.....
Which is fine but for 100 Euros i was hoping for a bit more variation.......
Mark was in inspired form last night...his playing was as great as ever and he was rocking away standing up loving every second......
Song for sonny liston was the best i have ever heard it and that was down to Ian Thomas giving a more rocky approach......danny was a little more intricate but ITs drumming suited the song better....i felt his drumming was weaker on hill farmers though and it did not quite take off the way danny can make it......
Privateering was an incredible incredible song.....mike on his bagpipe or whatever it is was sublime.....the melody, the nuances and the lyrics were just fantastic.....
Mark was playing a blue guitar for sfsl and wye aye man...and it sounded stunning!!!!
The audience seemed split to me in terms of MK and dylan and both aritists went down a treat...the )2 arena was an amazing venue!!!!
I nearly feel asleep during Bob's set as with the exception of two tracks they all had ecxactly the same tempo and monotonous feel....i wont be watching his set in manchester or London......but i guess its worth seeing it once......he and is band are not musically interesting.....it was a bit like watching a tribute band in a pub....good background music but having to sit through it nearly sent me to sleep which is pretty hard considering the loudness.....
The other new song sounded great......reminded me of kingdom come.....but better and more powerful......
I really hope there is variation in MKs setlist otherwise for those of us attendning multiple gigs it may drag....
But to sum up it was great to see our man back on stage in his element rocking out.....
Thanks MK and band for a great preformance!!

Many thanks MB for your great review! It's been quite a strain waiting for first-hand info!
I'm glad to hear that Mk and the band were on form and I can hardly wait for Manchester on Monday. Maybe the set-list will change over the coming weeks!
A few questions. Were you allowed to go to the front or not? Was it a very noisy, partisan audience, also were people going in and out throughout the show? I heard from Guy's forum that MK's sound was too low - how did it seem to you? Lastly, were there any tour books for sale?
Maybe I'll see you on Monday in Manchester - we are 4th row centre block.
Cheers!

I think you'll be be lucky Val ;)
CMG and C swap is pending. Should happen in Glasgow... ;)

Guy's ranted at someone about a set list complaint which is amusing, however in it he says "Did you hear the two new songs? (more to come)". So maybe they will airing more than 2 new songs.

Thrilled to find this forum, as a Dylan devote and brand new Knopfler fan I was disapointed to find little chatter at the MK site about the tour or last night. I see you have your own ER! ;D ;D
Really looking forward to seeing a few of these shows when they wrap things up in London.
PS: when I saw the pic I new someone would be on the book title in a snap.

He doesnt look too happy does he,must be the cold Irish weather :o :o
I couldnt make it last night due to about a million & one things so yesterday was a bit of a pissed off one but in the cold light of day I'm not too disappointed today. Dont get me wrong, missing MK in dublin is like being away for christmas or something but looking at Bobs setlist today I struggled to know a few of the songs - I'd imagine that Bob fans would feel the same way about MK's setlist.I think that by half way through Bobs set I'd be pulling whats left of my hair out where as if you were a Bob fan the main course was still to come while you were watching MK.I'm disappointed to have missed MK but the fact that they never played a song together puts me wondering what the hell they did put this tour together at all for ::) ::) If you didnt know any better youd have thought that it was MK & Bob on stage at the one time ::)

I think ignorance is the key word. While either artist may not be anothers cup of tea, they both deliver in their own way IMO. I knew nothing post DS of Mark two weeks ago but after diving in to his solo stuff I'm inthralled and can't wait to see him. I'm actually fine with no DS songs for as with Dylan, I think their current bands sound best doing the more recent material.
Here's hoping there will be more converts along the way! :)

They are security backup to Simfy recording.
As Simfy is not recording this time all we can hope is some excerpts see the light as bonuses for the next album (like for the TRD 2 cd edition and cd single)

Sounds absolutely as a "Get Lucky" leftover. There is no doubt that the song is really about this area, everything a good Knopfler tune needs is there - historical content, the depression of the poor people and so on... Would be nice to have the lyrics...

I actually find it very interesting that Sultans is not in the set list. Thinking about Ian Thomas for me it was always clear that I would judge him by the way he would play Sultans of course. Seems to be the absolute (drummer's) reference song. But while I guess that Coyote, What It Is and maybe Donegan's Gone will show up during the next shows, I am quite sure that Romeo and/or Sultans will not see the light of day on this tour.

I'm a massive Dylan fan, good to hear that most people enjoyed the gig-unfortunately I can't make any of the shows on this tour but I think Bob & Mark is a great combination. I'll never understand why some Bob fans dislike Mark, he's a wonderful guitarist and a brilliant songwriter. I wouldn't pay much attention to some of the sarcastic/rude posts on the ER forum, it's pretty obvious that Dylan & Knopfler have a lot of respect for each other and that's all that matters.
For the people who are seeing Dylan live for the first time I'd say don't be concerned by Bob not talking to the audience, he has hardly ever done that but it doesn't mean that he's bored and just going through the motions, it's just the way he is!

Words from the wise! And from MarkB also.
This is what it's all about, dedicated fans discovering more about an artist than they were aware of before.
Not everything is to everyones taste, but there is much ignorance in the world (as the Irish would say.)

Agree with you Fletch. I've never liked Dylan, and I will probably never be a devoted fan but some weeks ago I decided to give him another try and listen to parts of his large oevre. I worte a longish post about why I never found access to Bob's music in that MK and Bob - Differences and Similarites thread, so I won't repeat it here. But the most important thing is: I now know the reasons, and I don't need to be frustrated anymore. And I understand Dylan better. I even like some of his stuff. And yes, even though many people say his concerts are horrible from an aesthetic point of view, I'm looking forward to seeing him live and judge by myself. That's a HUGE step forward for me personally, and I'm glad this tour forced me to think about it.
-
Agree with both of you (fletch and goldenheart 96) I can not understand why anyone would criticise Knopfler-one of the things I've always liked about him is how his guitar playing always serves the songs-some people who are great guitarists seem to write songs that give them an excuse to show how good they are on guitar but Knopfler has never done that, his focus has always been on the song.
-

Back on an other thread - topic, I had began writing a "defense" thesis for Bob, initiated from your comments goldenheart (you know the one that finds similarities with Paul Simon). I finished the first paragraph and I realized it would take me at least an afternoon to finish it and it would be too big to offer anyone to read, especially in a forum. Now I find that the well tempered people don't need logic to be persuaded. I started listening to all (and I mean all) of the Bob Dylan albums, now that I have more time, (since I was recently laid off - you know the terrible crisis in Greece, leaves nearly 800 people without a job each day. The unemployment rate is officially 17% and unofficially 25%) together with my daughter. She couldn't understand, she is just a month old.
But yesterday a strange thing happened. You know when you hear a familiar song but an the exact moment everything, sort of falls into place, and you connect, like listening to it for the first time. Many people claim that the BD album closer to the sound of DS (actually influencing DS) was Blood on the tracks. But on an album released close to that, "planet waves" there is this song "Going going gone". The opening 3-4 chords reminded me of a DS song. And even if the song follows it's own magnificent turn, I couldn't get this feeling that MK somehow had ???? connected with this very song. Give it a listen if you are not familiar with it and let me know what you thing. And yes, his voice back then was almost nice, youthful zest filling the gaps. Lately I can hardly take it. But it is quite distinctive and fabulous to hear BD's voice as a character on a film like "Masked and Anonymous".
-
Going Going Gone is a wonderful song and great recording. Robbie Robertson is playing lead guitar on that one and I think Robertson & Knopfler have a lot in common as guitarists and songwriters. I guess guitarists who are songwriters take a different approach to playing than guitarists who are not writers.
-
I can connect to the song 'Going going gone'.
About 5 or 6 years before Dire straits came on to
the scene, I was only a child. My Dad was constantly
playing great records. Amongst these, he regularly
played 3 albums by Dylan. 'Desire', Blood on the tracks'
and 'Planet waves'.These songs as a child, seemed to weave
their way into my soul.
The song that seemed to grab me the most
was Going going gone, especially the opening part
on the guitar. It had a Knopfler feel to it even before
Knopfler came onto the scene. It may have even
been this song which sowed the seed in my brain,
so that when Knopfler's guitar playing arrived on the
scene a few years later, my ears must have pricked up.
My favourite Dylan records are definitely from the 70's
& early 80's. 'Slow train coming' is my favourite,
& not even for Mark's exquisite guitar playing,
but for Dylans vocals, & the way he delivers the songs.
'Precious Angel' is for me Dylans overall best song.
Again not just for the great guitar, but for the way Bob
sings.
Cheers. BBB

LE,
I totally agree with you about the omission of 'Sultans' and after reading some 'reasonable' reviews from the Dylan fraternity I think a couple of 'Straits' numbers should of been included as a lot of Dylan fans don't know Knopfler's 'solo' songs like we all do.
One such review reckoned that if he had played Sultans it would have bought the house down!!! that says it all I reckon. Still looking forward to next Friday evening when we see him at Bournemouth. Not sure I am staying for the Dylan part though....
Any 'MK' goodies for sale at the shows anyone?

Isaac also twittered that MK played 60 minutes and indeed NO Dire Straits song.
LE
MK played exactly 67 min. ;)
-
marky49, you sneaky bastard :-)
anyways, if anyone wants to hear Bob singing in a VERY unusual way, then try the (i love it) album "Nahsville Skyline...
-
Come on Pottel, tell us something new! Anyway, it was a surprise back then, but even in those times it was a NICE surprise. Imagine all the Dylan fans back then listening to the voice of Modern times. That would be surreal. Or Dada. Or postmodern, when postmodern term wasn't even invented and it simply put such things under the "unlistenable" area. .
-
for dylan fans it is obvious that is true Vgone, but not for the average knopfler fan, that is why.
-
Thanks for bringing me back to the ground Pottel, I just thought this was supposed to be common knowledge. After all it is one of his shortest albums, less than 30 minutes, so it should be the most approachable one, especially for the ones not particularly fond of Dylan. :lol But since you are a Dylan fan as well, if you are looking for something let me know, I might be of some help. For Floyd as well. Really what do you think of the immersion Dark side?
-
I guess there are few people in Europe with more Dylan stuff than our chairman... ;)
Knopfler stuff the same.

OK, LE. That should teach me next time to be modest. But maybe this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

got it and love it.
do not like the marbles and the scarf though.
i think the sound quality of the quad versions is brilliant, and really love the live wembley 1974 show on it, as, even though i got about 12 different bootleg versions of it, it never EVER sounded this good....

oh trust me, there are, if i am in the group of 500 people with shitloads of Dylan then that is already good. i am nowhere near a complete set of Dylan shows. i still have huge gaps, even though i got well over 2400 live recordings, not counting video's (am not into collecting dylan voio's, he's not the most exiting of performers, so i rather hear him play then watch him stand and play) or the hundreds of different compilations, also i do not really collect multiple versions of the same show, yet. if i can get a soomlos, bach or schubert recording i will go for those, but i plan to start collecting multiples some day, something i always did with Knopfler and Floyd,...now as for the floyd, there i can say that i have friggin shitloads of material, here i come closer to the top 200 or so, but still, that is not my aim, it just happened as i loved these artists, and wanted to hear ANYTHING that i can lay my filthy little hands upon, not being in some elite group.

Honestly, I cannot hear too big differences - on YouTube. Have to hear him live of course, to hear if he gets the BOOM right, but as far as I can see it he is very capable of the drums! :lol

Great to see Mark standing again and being so full of energy. Fantastic playing by the band. I'm now really regretting, due to finacial circumstances, not having bought at least a ticket to one show :( Guess I'll have to do with the great recordings people are making and will be definately waiting for Mark's 'own' tour in either 2012 or 2013 !

Well what can I say, I am not an expert, I even don't know if the drum play was as good as Danny's (although I liked listening and watching him) BUT.......listening now it seems that the rhythm wasn't as fast as I remember last tours!
Of course I can be wrong and I sure need to be there to judge and give a honest opinion! ;D

Me.
Because Mark is not the only one on stage.
We're talking about Speedway here, but as I'm typing those lines I'm listening to the Dublin recording of Sonny Liston and I think this song was also much more powerful with Danny.
I know my voice count for nothing for Mark and Co but I agree with Superval99, please bring Danny back!
(No offense to Ian Thomas of course

Yep, I did the same at least once on both two most recents tours during SOS : just concentrating on Danny's playing during the whole song. What an experience!

Hi All, I'm new here.
I didn't know this thread was still here. I seen it and then it was gone. I thought the gig was brilliant both Mark and Dylan. Only thing about Mark was I was hoping for him to play for a bit longer because it was billed as a double headliner. Set was nice and varied. Would've liken one or two Straits songs because It was my first time to see Mark, And I seen he is doing them now. Do you think he was going to come back for an encore? Seemingly he was. I didn't read the rest of the thread cause I don't have time right now but I will do later.

Hi, Welcome here!
Nice to read that you loved MK's set! I am looking forward to "my" show in Oberhausen. It is pretty clear that MK will release a new album probably early
2012 and that they will do another tour - you should really try to go! His concerts are great - even if they are not always outstanding, they are really
an awesome experience... He plays about 2 hours and it seems he is willing to change his setlist more than he used to do in earlier years...
All the best, enjoy this forum, it's great,
