Yes, and another one that was confirmed by Guy as "Corned Beef City", which was the song that rocked a little bit more I suppose? (And Mark was using the Danelectro with a slide)

If we don't have the lyrics to both of these songs by the end of Bobs concert tonight, then I say that someone should buy me tickets, airfare, accommodation and I'll get the job done. Deal?

OK, Corned Beef City is an mid tempo rocker, similar feel to Gravy Train or No Wonder She's Confused. MK playing slide on the Danelectro, I assumed Donegan when I saw it.

Privateers is a Celtic type thing, starts off quiet with MK and RB playing a folky acoustic thing, similar feel to Marbletown or imagine Border Reiver played acoustic. Then between verses the full band come in to rock it up a bit. Good tunes. :)

According to Guy Fletcher and Isaac, this is not Privateers but Privateering.

Isaac twittered a few minutes ago that they played a THIRD NEW SONG! And he says it would sound good, too! (Ok, whatever that means...)

What's wrong with MK? How cool is that? I would never have expected him to do that! :o I was guessing one new song at the same place in the set list from the first to the last show at the most...

Great info dusty, who's going to be the first with lyrics? :)

There is the chance these songs will develop from what you lucky folk are hearing now, and when they are on a cd one day!

That's a good point, Fletch.  Just recently, Guy said he often thought they should play the songs live first, then record them for the cd later. :)

I would think they are ready, mixed and done already?
Maybe they use some of the recordings of this tour for some bonus stuff! Would be so cool...

Or maybe it is not finally decided which tracks get on the album and which not...

This somewhat "lame" evening had a very great ending!  8)

Isaac said that "a ship was mentioned" in the new song. So it seems the new album will contain some of the best stuff that MK was always able to write about...  And I stick my neck out here and now by proclaiming that "PRIVATEERING" will be the title of the new album next year!  ;)

Lyric snippets from memory:

Corned Beef City had something about needing to put diesel in the tank.

Privateering or whatever it's called had a great line about (not verbatim) "Working not strictly in the service of the crown."

The drum beat on the rocky bit of Privateering confused my slightly - it was a straight ahead 4/4 "rock" beat, which you don't usually have on a folky song like this, but it worked.

As for the new Les Paul, it was light blue so probably more cyan than Pelham Blue but it could have been the lights. It definitely, 100%, had a "stinger" on the headstock and a "new" white switch tip (Google if you don't know what I'm talking about!). The Danelectro looked new as well.

No, Mark and RIchard playing almost identical parts on 6 strings, MK on the Ragpickers Sig, Richard also on a Martin.

Fletch, the Dylan fans were very respectful at Glasgow 1.

Thanks a lot for the recordings!

***Privateering is for sure the best one, at least most interesting. A bit reminiscent of The Man's Too Strong.

***Corned Beef City is a straightforward rocker that is a bit too straightforward. Would have been lifted to another level with a horn section and/or more powerful background vocals.

***<newsong> is a sweet Celtic-style ballad that would have worked excellently in a Transatlantic Sessions setting. A bit boring, perhaps.

But I think it's cool that he leaves out so much DS material

I won't listen to the new songs before I hear them live, but from the reactions I'm very positive. I'm just afraid that Mark decides to drop some of them from the album. Several rocky/groovy tunes have been dropped, like Gravy Train and Summer of Love. Pyroman, Small Potatoes, etc.

Many thanks jbabent for sharing ! Very good for a low-quality recording, enough to get a good idea. Beautiful songs indeed...

Re the sharing or not debate... I have no problem at all with spoilers and sharing, as we are all adults and have been warned with *SPOILERS AHEAD*.

I have a -slight- trouble with the fact that there is a strict "no recording" policy and that yet we get some records... but hey, they are Ipod quality, nowhere near anything releasable, just to wet your appetite !

But the major problem I have is, why is it that those policies become stricter and stricter, while MK said in 2000 that he likes people recording his concerts !! ?

Arrgh, couldn't resist and listened to them all!! Privateering is great, could use a guitar solo though. Corned Beef City sounds very Gravy Train to me. Song three is also very beautiful, lovely melody (go figure, Bob! LOL) MK seems to keep the Celtic approach. Reminds me of the Golden Heart record except that the singing is much better  ;D

Thank YOU Shangri-La for the lyrics, it makes it easier for me to understand what the song is about! ....Uuuhhh now it is hard to wait till the new album will be released and we all can talk about the meaning of the lyrics again! ;D

Rollergirl I understand what you try to say! Yeahhh we should respect the wish of Bob and in this case also from Mark not to record, but many fans like to know what kind of songs will be played. Especial the fans who won't be able to attend a concert! As well the video as the new songs have a great quality and shows that Mark's voice and the music is still great and wonderful! ;)

That's my impression as well. The band is a well-oiled machine - sublime as ever. But MK's playing  is also in excellent condition again, hardly any greenies and a lot of new ideas. To be honest, I haven't heard him play live that good since ten years.

I don't know if it's because he can relax more being the "support" act, but MK looked happier on Saturday than for a long, long time, probably since 96.

One question. How is the riff played on CBC? MK is playing slide licks and John and Richard are on acoustic...

In MK's case, it probably does. We all know he hates crappy youtube vids of his performance, why should it be different with recordings of new songs? This is just my impression but I always thought these facts were closely connected with the reason why he doesn't want to release a DVD or live album.

I don't believe that Mark is influenced at all by the leak or not of his new song on YT. It can bore him or make him not that happy but if it really did it he wouldn't play them live now because he knows that it will happen a-n-y-w-a-y.

If there is a dvd it is because he/his record company want to, and if not it is because he/his record company doesn't wan't to.

I am really conviced that this is two things apart.

That said please don't deduce that I encourage YT post. No I am only interested by good IEM stealth*

Besides...the YT versions have such crappy sound....once the various digital audio recordings hit the trackers...why go back to listen to it on YT? Mark is probably just annoyed by the quality of the recording...if PCM was concerned about competition with a possible live release..they wouldn't allow digital audio recording equipment at MK shows.

Not sure if I like the fact that these songs have popped up at youtube, I seem to remember someone here requested not to put them up there. Well, seems to be inevitable these days. Wait til Guy finds out and chances of a live DVD or CD will drop to zero.

I don't think this will affect decision of a live CD/DVD but what worries me is that he'll decide not to play new songs again before their release because of that.

Well, MK played "Why aye man" and "Quality shoe" in 2002, there were many recordings in audio and video, and he continued playing new songs before the record came out, he did with "Boom like that" in a spanish tv show in Santiago de Compostela, he did with "Secondary waltz" as well, and there were recordings in audio and video from all of them, and in youtube as well...

It doesnt affect anything regarding sales etc etc, in the contrary, is free promotion throught the net...

I agree with that.

And to my know if Mark doesn't allow filming it was said because it generate unpleasant effect on the band performing.
Contrary to BD staff, they don't chase the clip posted on YT once they are on.
The only chase done so far was the famous 2008 IEM stealth.

And, as a matter of fact, not only do we know Mark said the videoing would disturb the band, he also dislikes shitty quality versions of his songs. So...

Not sure some of these songs will make the final cut in terms of the next CD. Think about it. Millionaire Blues, Kingdom Come, Early Bird - all nice little ditties to tap the feet to but not strong enough to make a final CD. For me, the same with Corned Beef City. Privateering and Haul Away - yes, for certain as these songs show Mark at his best. Corned Beef City - nice, but good enough for the final CD version - doubt it! But hey, who knows. Hope it is!

In my view, Mark has often left some of the best material aside. Dissing Millionaire Blues but keeping My Parties? Keeping Summer of Love from a record where it would have fitted perfectly both sound- and lyricwise?

But I'm also afraid that Corned Beef City will be left out. Haven't heard the song, but it wouldn't surprise me, much like Pyroman, Summer of Love, Gravy Train, etc... Too simple rock? A real shame.

Very few songs performed live by Mark did not end on records or even on the album :

I won't count early DS stuff.

- Twisting By The Pool : EP
- ITILYTM  : Knebworth album
- Long Highway : CD single (nearly 10 years after being first performed live)
- Gravy Train : CD single
- Pyroman : only unreleased one.

So I guess that most of these newbies will at least end as digital bonus track if not kept for the main album.

As the new album will be named "Privateering" (I decided so  :lol) it would be strange if the title song wouldn't be onto it. Haul Away is a perfect album closer. About Corned Beef City I share most  of your opinions - it is a little to simple song, the theme of Corned Beef City would have deserved a little bit  more elaborated lyrics maybe (but who am I) and a solo from MK would also have been great.

Yeah, great tracks have left off. But I think that My Parties is a little gem, brilliant lyrics. Millionaire blues is lyrically great, but maybe not that great musically.

Corned Beef City

http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/Corned%20Beef%20City (http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/Corned%20Beef%20City)

Corned beef city is British slang for a large council housing estate, especially Dagenham.

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070301074330AArzvQt (http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070301074330AArzvQt)

In the 1930s, Dagenham became an overspill area for the inhabitants of east London. It received the nickname ' corned beef city' because that was all the people could afford to eat.

Privateering

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer)

A privateer is a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign shipping during wartime. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having to spend public money or commit naval officers. They were of great benefit to a smaller naval power or one facing an enemy dependent on trade: they disrupted commerce and pressured the enemy to deploy warships to protect merchant trade against commerce raiders. The cost was borne by investors hoping to profit from prize money earned from captured cargo and vessels. The proceeds would be distributed among the privateer's investors, officers and crew. It has been argued that privateering was a less destructive and wasteful form of warfare, because the goal was to capture ships rather than to sink them.[1]

Privateers were part of naval warfare from the 16th to the 19th century. Some privateers have been particularly influential in the annals of history. Sometimes, the vessels would be commissioned into regular service as warships. The crew of a privateer might be treated as prisoners of war by the enemy country if captured.

Could Haul Away be about a burial at sea?

My take would be for the first lines:

Was a windless night

you never were
a steady bore
I gave my hand
... your  descent
I'm a living man

"Come with me to Barbary" - a little bit of Wikipedia:

The Barbary Corsairs, sometimes called Ottoman Corsairs or Barbary Pirates, were pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa, based primarily in the ports of Tunis, Tripoli and Algiers. This area was known in Europe as the Barbary Coast, a term derived from the name of its Berber inhabitants. Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean, south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard and even South America,[1] and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland, but they primarily operated in the western Mediterranean. In addition to seizing ships, they engaged in Razzias, raids on European coastal towns and villages, mainly in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, but also in England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Ireland, and as far away as Iceland.

I just ask Guy about this... After some listenings, I realised that maybe some of these three new songs could be left put of the new cd. Sometimes it happens.

"Privateering" and "Haul away" sounds very very nice so my guess this two will be at the next record, but I have my doubts about "Corned beef city".

But somehow I'm starting to think that the ongoing discussion about new (or unreleased) songs in the setlist affected some of Marks decisions. Perhaps GF has been suggesting to be a little more brave when it comes to compiling the setlist in the recent tour. However, I'm quite sure that he won't admit such an influence.

There is another point that brings up the question if the GF-forumer's feedback may have some influence on MK: How on earth could his guitar playing become so mindblowingly perfect again?

-----------------------------------------------------
An early morning in London, after walking the dog MK returns to his home and puts the kettle on. After sipping some of that steaming hot tea he decides to fire up his computer since there is no motorcycle racing on the telly.

"Where are this damn reading glasses?" he starts to mumble.
"Ah, there...." and clicks to start his browser to have short look at www.guardian.co.uk

After a short while he gazes across the frame of his reading glasses over the kitchen table.

"Mmmph, my new book 'Death Comes For The Archbishop'...no, not yet - I'm gonna set aside the reading pleasure until I'm on the road again" MK thinks and starts to type guyfletcher.co.uk into the address bar of his browser.

"Ah, this Guy Fletcher forum people are a bunch of hard-boiled critics" MK laughs. "So I'm in for a challenge", grabs the phone in order to call Guy Fletcher and tells him they are going to play no DS hits in the upcoming shows. Afterwards he starts to pick up the guitar in the living-room and noodles away for some hours.

--------------------------------------------------------

(An ice-cold beer has been helping to lay the foundation of this purely fictional story....)

I went from German to Spanish, I hope it makes some sense. If you type hauling into youtube, you get some videos of paddling people in a canoe and a strange video "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THpp3ynOUsI" - hauling liquor (aka moonshining).

So my guess is that "haul away" is - typical MK - ambiguous:
a) it expresses a movement in nautical terms
b) it expresses a disappearing in some way

But I don't know for sure.

Yeah. As I think it is about a sea funeral (it was a windless night WHEN YOU LEFT THE SHIP, Now you lie deep in the dark blue sea), it is probably the moment the body is given to the sea and ... drifts away, or as Mark has it, hauls away..., and also away from the storyteller, the living man...

Morbid, but maybe true...

I already heard the songs for example at Youtube as audio, but watching and listening is better! :P

Haul has to do with navigation of ships! It is a term that is used on sailing boats in the past, but perhaps it is still used by big ships now.

The more I think about "Haul Away" (and listen to it..which is a lot!)..the more I think that I missed something in my earlier post. Originally I thought that it was referring to a ceremonial burial at sea...not so sure now. The first verse really threw me off..now I'm beginning to think that he is talking about his friend stumbling and going overboard. "Was a windless night..when you left the ship"..left..or fell? It's followed by "you never were a steady boy"...maybe too much to drink and a bit too wobbly. I can't quite make out the next line...but it sounds like something like  "I gave you a hand..but you did slip". After a lengthy search..they decided to quit..and proceeded to "Haul Away" for home...imho of course.  :)

It has a real nice sound, quite similar to the cittern that McCusker plays... good choice, and very well played!

I am reanimating this thread because I found it interesting what Guy posted today: That there is obviously no studio version of Privateering as yet.
I was sure that they have recorded the songs already. Knowing this I think it is clear what exactly it is they are doing in the Studio next week: Recording the three new songs Privateering, Haul Away and Corned Beef City, after the tour experience they probably will have a special lively feel. What do you think?

I've not been looking at this thread and I'm not sure why I have come on to it now but a couple of comments on the etymology of "haul away".

I am not an expert on this subject but my guess is that the phrase comes from an old sea shanty (work songs sung on old sailing boats), such as "Haul Away, Joe". Commonly, the word "haul" means to pull something with great effort. On the old sailing ships, the raising of the sails was done by hand, as was the rasing of the anchor. These tasks were team efforts. The singing of sea shanties was done to help co-ordinate the efforts of the sailors involved, as they pulled together, and also to make the task seem a touch less arduous. The singing was led by the shantyman, not an official position but a much respected role, nevertheless.

Somewhere in my boxes, I have some old 1960s' folk music magazines from Liverpool called SPIN and they have a series of articles by Stan Hugill, a real expert on the subject of sea shanties and sailors' songs. I must dig those old magazines out some time. Stan Hugill wrote one of the standard books on the subject.

There were different types of shanties for different tasks and even different types of shanty for hauling tasks. A long haul shanty was used where a succession of "pulls" was needed, for example to haul on the ropes in order to raise the sails. Short haul shanties were used when there was a longer period of rest between each tremendous pull. Shanties were very rhythmic, rather like field hollers and chain-gang work songs, or even the chants used by the military when performing drills. Some of these hauling tasks on old sailing ships were undertaken in order to alter the direction of the sails to catch a change in the wind.

The word "haul" does also refer to changing a ship's course at sea but, at the same time, "overhaul" is a nautical term meaning to overtake or catch up with another vessel.  Also, I believe old sailors would refer to the wind hauling southward, for example, meaning that the wind was changing to a southerly direction. Despite the slightly different usages in different contexts, I'm sure they're all linked.

None of this says anything about MK's new song, of course but here's "Haul Away, Joe":

"Haul away" can also, I believe, refer to the ship itself moving speedily through the water.

Thank you very much for these enlightening information. Though not a native speaker myself, after hearing the song for the first time, I was sure it had a "naval", "maritime" character, and had no doubt about the meaning of "Haul", just by feeling. Now you made a very precise explanation that helps to understand the roots of this song, thanks again for that.

I still think it is about a burial at sea, at least in the first narrative layer. ("It was a windless night, when you left the ship, you never were steady born,
"I gave my hand, outward you did slip - I'm a living man, you're a bore ... (?), haul away, haul away for home"  (BTW, the fact that I do not get this missing word here (acorn?), is nearly killing me....) (EDITED to remember: Bore also means "soul", doesn't it?

Also, as typcial in MK's lyrics, the meaning of the chorus lyric lines changes - in the first verse I am sure the dead body is hauling away (from the ship), hauling away for home, to the sea, because he/she was never steady born, and the sea is the best and only place to get rest for him/her - still not sure about man or woman here. "I'm a living man..." also is in the chorus, so I am still not sure about the perspective.

In the last verse, MK sings "the morning brings out a fresh young breeze/ to fill our sails and end the doldrums/ our lucky ship speeds across the sea.."
so this time "Haul Away" refers to the ship itself, exactly the way that twm has explained...

Great lyrics! Great song!

LE -   I have always understood the words to be "You never were a steady boy"   and  "I'm a living man and you're a cold one", but of course I could be wrong entirely!

Having now heard "Haul Away" (last night in Hammersmith), it is not a sea shanty either in terms of its rhythm or structure, let alone its lyrics.

I also heard "Privateering" second time. The two songs suggest that, around the time he wrote these songs, MK had been reading a book about nautical matters in the distant past. I wonder which book. Maybe he will reveal its title in interview at a later date.

"Privateering" (not exactly in the service of the Crown) sounds to me like MK's commentary on contemporary finance, economics and politics.  I trust he'll do it again at another show as it is growing on me.

Hi, twm, hope you enjoyed the Hammersmith show.

I also thought about these themes referring Privateering, but also thought about the modern "mercenary soldiers", who are working for the army nowadays, "not exactly in the service of the crown", mixing law and lawlessness, and who are "employed" by government because the own troups are not powerful enough, in Afghanistan, Iraq and so on...

But the finance/economics references are more likely.

Haul Away surely is a very sad and affecting song, very moving. Whereas he has played Privateering at every single show of this tour, with Haul Away, you have been more lucky to be able to listen to it. So you will be able to listen to Privateering at your next two shows at Hammersmith for sure.

About the book:  He is known for loving Patrick O'Brian's novels.

Patrick O'Brian is very possible. Perhaps those novels caused him to explore elsewhere: non-fiction, perhaps.

"Privateer" is really growing on me. I hope, on the album, he keeps to the fairly simple presentation of this tour - mainly him, solo acoustic, with some band members joining in. Nothing flamboyant, some neat guitar work, quietly understated and all the more forceful for that.

And, yes, the Hammersmith shows were enjoyable and great fun. I wish Bob wouldn't always end with a run of heavy blues arrangements, chugging along and so very loud. They seem to go down well with the crowd, which is what it's about, I suppose. Similarly, I wish Mark would vary his set list a bit more from night to night. But, it's their right to choose what to play. If I could afford to buy up all the tickets for a whole night, perhaps I could then (at least) influence their song choices a little but, until then, I try to make the very best of what's on offer. And, of course, what was on offer at the end of the final show was the two of then duetting on "Forever Young", with Mark's gesture to Bob at exactly the right moment in the song and Bob's gesture to Mark in the line-up at the end. Smiles all around the stage and smiles all around this household, too.

I had a couple of pleasant surprises after the show as well, so three bonus moments in an evening is pretty good going!
